Is superdry no longer trendy? I need to buy dd a coat...

Dd starts high school next week, she's not really into fashion (doesn't care what she wears ), she needs a new coat and I would like to get her something trendy rather than a cheap rain coat ( like she usually has ). I have heard that superdry coats are no longer trendy? Do what are pre teens and teens now wearing?

Agree about Decathlon. Everything we have bought there so far has been well priced, practical and wears well and doesn't look too bad either!

Another saying IME they don't wear coats - especially if they have a blazer. DD1 lost 3 coats in the first 6 months ...never wearing them, just carrying them she keep leaving them behind (and part of me thinks it was slightly deliberate)...and even though not expensive branded ones they still never turned up in lost property...
DD1 gets a bus, no shelter - no coat (in fact she is usually running for it so not much time to get wet). The school has laid back uniform code she spent the whole of winter (yep snow and rain) in cheap black converse rip offs...
and she is 'anti brand' (thankfully!) as apparently are a few children at her school - so when I suggested leather Vans (slightly more waterproof) she was horrified [sigh]- they were labelled!
She has got an umbrella though...used it maybe once or twice in torrential rain - and they walk to the shop for lunch - almost a 1 mile each way ...
Really wouldn't spend a lot on a coat at the moment -agree with others send her without with a project to try and find out what the done thing is...

DD2 is about to start yr7 and is more interested in fashion than me and DD1. I just got her a khaki parka style one from BHS. DD1, yr8 has a similar one in adult size from Sainsburys, that style seems quite popular. Most kids round here shop in Primary, Hand M or new look. They aren't really into brands apart from converse and vans.

Vernonon - I often drive home and see our local secondary school kids completely drenched as they walk home in the pouring rain and refuse to wear a coat Grin. Sometimes you even see them carrying a coat in the rain.

I haven't bothered to buy my 14 year old DS a coat for years - he.just.will.not.wear.one. He is never ill or has a cold, so I am grateful to save the money !

It all depends what you have to do. DS1 gets the school bus so he goes car to bus and bus into school, no hanging about outside. He has a locker but chooses no coat.

I don't get this no coat wearing thing at all. My dd is 14 and wears a coat when it's cold and so do her friends. She doesn't like to be cold!

If it snows my two would wear gloves but no coat. They usually have a t-shirt/shirt/blazer so that's 3 layers.

Mine will only wear a coat if there a foot of snow, or its raining heavily (not showers).

we have a Superdry outlet 40 mi ute drive away (and Superdry shop in town), so I go there if I want any stuff. Finding coats there is a bit hit and miss, but I did get one for £40, so not too bad a price.

DS1 wore a coat to the bus stop a handful of times in year 7 but never since. He's not bothered about clothes or what anyone thinks, so it's not because it's not cool to wear one, simply that it's a nuisance having to cart it round in school.

Can't believe nobody's kids wear coats. Even when it snows?

I allowed my DD to be herself, and in year 7 she has far more friends than she has ever had. To be honest at my DCs school having any kind of coat (regardless of weather) would make you stand out.
When there is snow on the ground the school usually allows Mufti as its the only way to get them to dress "sensibly" for the weather.

But at a neighbouring school they do seem to wear coats - both schools have lockers.

I like Decathlon.

Individual is cool, but only if it's the childs own choice, because by choosing it implies the confidence to carry it off and ignore peer pressure to fit in.

Yes, maybe a good idea to leave the coat until they have actually gone back, if she doesn't have a blazer, a plain jumper or cardi and an umbrella would do to start with, then have a look at what the other girls are wearing and see if either something appeals to your DD or you see a trend that you think would be suitable for her that she is okay with. It'll probably take a few weeks for things to settle into what is seen as cool and what isn't.

Individual is cool.

But not a lot of other Y7's in a new high school will have realised that yet. I feel your pain, Nevergoingtolearn. I used to kit out my DS1 is designer labels even though he couldn't have cared less.

It might be an idea to wait a few weeks, until she needs a coat and reassess.

No one at my DCs school wears coats!

If you get her one, then if she wants a boyish parker can look cool, and be practical (I'd be far more likely to look in Gap than Hollister's).

Just because she has Asperger's doesn't mean you have to try to make her "fit in". If she is happy then let her make her own choices, being individual is cool.

I might put off buying it until after half term, a cheap Cag or umbrella can cope with weather until then.

All the girls in our area last winter were wearing a khaki green parka with fur trim hood. Dh and I were laughing that they were all the same. Dds one came from Primarni, but they were in most shops. I'm glad I didn't pay a lot for it, as she left a pen in the pocket that leaked everywhere, and I can't get all the stain out.

I think dd will want to wear something as she has to wait for the bus and their is no bus shelter

I once thought that too! Aparently standing around in the cold with just shirt and blazer is so much cooler.

I think SuperDry is still cool in Y7/8 here. My DD who is just going into Y6 is desperate for one, 16yo DS wouldn't be seen dead in one, and going into Y8 DS would happily wear one. I'll probably buy him one, as they are really good quality and do the job, never mind the label.

I'm glad DD's school has a school coat, and it's compulsory to wear it after autumn half term.
Superdry is still kindof cool here though. Can't you go with her to choose a coat though?

Report
Hulababy · 28/08/2015 08:45

Still plenty of teens wearing items of Superdry, Hollister and Jack
Wills here. And the shops are always full of them, usually with a parent hanging around ready to pay.

AuntieStella · 28/08/2015 08:13

She probably won't need a coat at all until after half term. Is there any chance she could use the time until one is really needed to spot what is being worn and report back?

OK, it won't come naturally to her, but would she respond to specific tasking?

Notice around here lots of teen girls wearing khaki coloured coats. No particular brand but that colour seems popular. Is there an outlet centre near where she could pick one?

She will have a locker to put it in.

I spoke to my DSD ( who I bought a superdry coat for a few years ago ) and she doesn't wear a coat at all.

I think dd will want to wear something as she has to wait for the bus and their is no bus shelter. I will look at lands end. If I ask her she will say 'get me anything' she's really not bothered about what she wears as long as it's not pink or girly.

Agree . I live off a road that teenagers at three local secondaries walk along to school . No one ever wears a coat-boys or girls . (mine didn't either, despite my protests) Sometimes a very thick scarf and gloves with blazer if it's really cold. I assume they don't have lockers

And I agree with wanker, too.

Half of DS1's stuff is Landsend. It's practical, good value in teen sizes, and he likes it.
