Pregnancy

Worried after six week scan -gestational sac but no yolk sac or embryo.

Have one healthy ds but have since had two mc in a row. Now pg again and had a six week scan for this reason yesturday and saw a gestational sac but with nothing inside. Sonographer said it was fine and what they would expect from a 'very early pregnancy' and to come back in two weeks for another one.
However I was expecting to see yolk sac by six weeks and most likely embryo and possibly heartbeat. I am confused that according to her everything is fine but it does not seem fine to me. She put in my notes that I am consistent with a 4-5 week pregancy but I know I should around six weeks as I am pretty sure give or take a day or two, when I ovulated. I only read the notes after I left so I had no chance to ask her if this date difference was a bad sign or not.
In a way having a scan at this stage has made me even more anxious and confused.

Has anyone else had similar experience with early scans?

yes they couldn't see anything much at my six week scan and asked me to come back two weeks later. By 8 weeks there was an obvious head, body and heart beat!! hope everything works out OK for you.

Taichmum - I had same at first scan - thought i was further along. Dated at 4/5 weeks only saw well formed gestation sac 5mm, went back 2 weeks later was then 6+3 according to sonographer and saw heartbeat etc.

Do understand how you are feeling because I was sure I was further along but must have ov'd slightly later and sperm can live for up to 5 days i think.

the next 2 weeks will seem to drag so try to keep occupied. Am now 12 weeks here so a positive result from similar 1st scan.

sorry, didnt mean to sound trite about keeping busy. I found the 2 week wait relly hard and I guess was trying to help it be easier. Didnt read that you had 2 prev m/c

Was size was gestational sac?

If the Sonographer said it was fine then I would say try not to worry. I had a scan last year as I was miscarrying and they said that even if the dates weren't so far wrong (I should have been 12 weeks and pg looked 5 weeks) then they could tell from the shape of the sac that it wasn't healthy.
Also bear in mind that if you ov'd a little later than you thought or if egg was fertilised at the end of its cycle rather than the beginning then that would make a difference to the dates too. Are they going to scan you again in a couple of weeks to check progress?
Fingers crossed for you x

Awen no not trite -it is the right thing to suggest. I am planning to try and meditate every day and generally fill my life with endless stuff to do. There is nothing I can do about it if it will be another mc so to try and distract myself is the only way. Luckily DS keeps me quite busy and I have a wedding to go to thank god. My sac is 11mm which I thought was a fair size to have nothing in it. Yours was 5mm?
Beckle speckle sorry to hear about your mc. They said the shape of mine was fine. However, the reason I do not find the sonographer the slightest bit reassuring is I had a scan at 7 weeks with my last pg and there was a perfect little bean with a heartbeat, perfect shape, size everything. It died 3 days later and I had a missed mc at 10 weeks after being completely convinced I had a viable pg. They gave me a stat of 97% at the time of seven week scan. . I am to go back at 8 weeks in two weeks time. It will be a long two weeks.
When I had my pg with DS I sailed through it, blissfully unaware that this baby game could be this upsetting and complex. Just as well. Ignorance is bliss!

yes itr was 5.3mm 2 weeks later was 20mm - that was at 6+3 so 11mm is a little small for 6 weeks. Might be you are near 5 weeks?

I have another scan on Tuesday and really nervous. Is nuchal fold scan, but I never realised that even tho 12 weeks lots can happen, only because of mumsnet have I found that out. Am keeping positive tho as best for bean i guess.

HOw old is your ds? Mine is 7 although he isnt here this weekend so am brooding too much over what if's.

this site might help, sounds like you are not quite as far along as you thought, try not to worry too much, it's very common

I had exactly the same in my first pregnancy, in fact they thought it was probably a non-viable pregnancy, until they finally found a HB at 8+2 (no HB visible at previous scan at 7+2 & small sac for gestational age based on LMP - but I knew I'd ovulated on CD18, as I was charting) - DD is now 18months!

Hi taichimum

Am in simiar position as you - went for supposedly 7 week scan last Monday as on fertility treatment only to be told sac empty and come back in a week. Wasn't given a very positive response from the clinic though - basically 'it might be too early or it might not develop at all, hang in there and come back in a week'.

The waiting game is the worst so I feel for you! Hope you're keeping busy and the time goes quickly.

Have got my scan today at 3.30 so hopefully can come back to you with a positive encouraging sign.

I had a scan at six weeks and there was a sac with nothing visible inside. The sonographer said this was perfectly normal and to go back in a week. When I went for the second scan, at seven weeks, there was a little heartbeat twinkling away. DS is now a healthy happy 3.3 and I wish the same result for you!

Dear Taichi -- am so sorry to hear about the uncertain news. I have nothing new to add only that I agree that even if you when you ovulated, it can take days before implantation happens and so you might not be a far along as consistent with ovulation. The wait and uncertainty is terrible. I will think of you and hopefully you'll get the reassurance you need as soon as possible. Fingers crossed!
Stay strong!

Thanks ladies. All your posts are very encouraging. Jo99 I wish you all the best for your scan today. I will be looking out for a post. Hope you see a lovely flashing bean.
Glimmer thanks for finding me here. Still too anxious to get stuck in to the pg after mc thread. Too many memories from last time. It is the wait for news one way or the other that is so dreadful. I know it was for you too. However my good friend is getting married on Friday so that is good distraction. I am making a meal out of wrapping presents and which shoes to wear just to fill up the time.
Just have to tick off the days and hope something is growing.......

Hi Taichimum!

Came back from the scan and little crumb is hanging in there with a tiny heartbeat! The waiting is just pants and I so feel for you, but try and focus on all the positive comments and news from others.

Also, a friend was talking to a midwife who has just done a two year scan course and apparently this is very common. Makes me wonder why scans are done so early in the first place?!

Really hope for good news for you and that the time goes quickly until then.

x

So glad you have some good news Jo.
I am currently 22 weeks pregnant after 3 miscarriages. This time round I didn't opt for the really early scan as I have been sent home to come back in 10 days/ 2 weeks so many times you can never relax. So I opted to have my first scan at 9 weeks so it would be a fairly sure 'yes or no', but then I started bleeding at 6 weeks and had an emergency scan. I though I was minimum 6 weeks if not 6 + 2, but when she scanned me there was a small yolk sac but no fetal pole etc. The sonographer didn't seem to concerned and said to come back as arranged 3 weeks later. Those 3 weeks were a nightmare as she had written on the form that the gestation was 5+ weeks (and I also didn't really have any symptoms) - which I was sure that I was minimum 6 weeks. Anyway, 3 weeks went by and the scan revealled my little bean was alive and wriggling - the first time I'd ever seen a little beating heart! As it turns out, at that first scan I would have dated 6+3 - so what it says in the books etc that you can see a heart beat at 6 weeks certainly isn't always correct.
Taichimum, I wish you all the best for your next scan and from my recent experience I would try not to worry too much as apparently it is so difficult to see and measure anything when it is all so small. I've heard numerous midwives say that they hate doing/advising such early scans as they can often lead to uncertainty. Good Luck

Hi Taichimum,

I would love to hear how you are getting on?

I am in a similar situation. I got scanned yesterday at what should have been at least 6+2 (I am also 100% sure of my ov date), but they only saw a gestational sac and yolk sac, no sign of a fetal pole. I was also told I'm measuring for

Had an 8 week scan on Friday. Measured 7 + 5 with heartbeat so all is well, so far. That is 1 day out form my dates so the first scan was not accurate picture. Just shows how unpredictable the whole thing is that early. However there was an area of fluid, possibly blood, outside the sac this time. Doc was not worried and said it is not uncommon. I am worrying though. I feel like I am waiting to miscarry, as both my prev pgs has heartbeats one minute and were gone the next and the presence of this fluid just fuels that worry.
Another scan at 10 weeks. The days tick by ......
Wave dancer all the best for you. From my experience your dates could still be spot on. I hope all is weel for you

Hi Taichimum....glad you found the hb at your scan, but that you are worrying about this fluid. If the doc isn't worried i would try to relax. MY sil has had bleeding in her pg and it turned out it was from a blood filled area between the amniotic sac and the uterine wall. She is now currently 30 weeks pg, and the bleeding stopped at about 16 weeks.

Try to take it easy and I wish you all the very best. It was third time lucky for me, so fingers crossed, and remember the ladies on the PG after MC thread will help you through this.

Good Luck!

I had the same thing at my early scan, at first they thought I was carrying twins then they realised it was some bleeding, probably implantation. This is very common but as most people don't have such early scans, they don't know anything about it. Im now 31 weeks and all is fine so far so try to relax. I had a previous mc so I know it's not easy...

Wavedancer · 11/07/2007 14:52

Taichimum,

I'm so pleased to hear things are working out. I know it's very hard to relax about things after what you've been through, but try and remember that miscarriages are random occurrences and now that you have seen a heartbeat, your chances of m/c are just 3% - that's a 97% chance that all will be just fine.

Thanks for your good wishes. I am praying for good news at the next scan and stories like yours do give me hope.

I hope you continue to have a wonderful pregnancy. xx
