School uniform - trousers for girls

Hi Eveyone

I've had a very long running thread on here under a different name about my battle to get dds school to allow girls wear trousers. I have recently appeared on This Morning Itv to debate this, and there has been lots of press activity on the matter. A group of us have formed a pressure group on Facebook, trying to collaborate our efforts. If you support this campaign could you please add yourself to the group, as it's by having numbers we become powerful. There are links to all the press on there too. Thanks all www.facebook.com/groups/491384444377946/

Do you remember there was a boy a couple of years ago, he challenged the policy in his school, and he did it by wearing a skirt. He wasn't wanting to wear a skirt everyday, he wanted to highlight the ridiculousness of insisting girls wear skirts, but not allowing boys to.

It went to the high court in the end, but I can't remember the outcome

Thanks for the support. It baffles me that a girl wearing trousers is seen as something radical in this day and age.

No one has ever explained why eitger. beyond "it's the uniform".

buy why.

give one non sexist non discriminatory reason why girls can't wear trousers.

I spent the first year that my 15 yr old daughter was at high school trying to convince her to wear trousers. She was having none of it. Her choice. In the end I gave up.
Every afternoon, of the hundreds of girls that stream out of the gates, I would be amazed if there was 10 in trousers.

Just want to add that wearing tights is a terrible idea for girls who are prone to UTIs. Girls should have the option of trousers so they don't have to freeze with bare legs or discuss their urinary tracts with all and sundry.

More importantly, this is a question of equal rights and of being aware of people with a gender which might differ from the sex they were born with.

question is how to reach the "it's uniform" crew. how can we get people to detach themselves from that and to realise that you can be supportive of a school but still make a stand about discriminatory policies

Which is absolutely their choice. But I don't understand why that means that the rules should forbid those 10 girls from wearing trousers. Much more sensible to just give them the choice.

But I also struggle to understand why parents, faced with active primary-aged girls, choose to ignore the options of trousers or shorts and instead invent bizarre "modesty short" combos to enable their DDs to wear a skirt at all times, even when the skirt isn't the most practical option.

That's choice tbiugh isn't it pers

the kids might want to wear shirts and a skirt. my dd does. she finds trousers uncomfortable as we are unable to find ones that fit suitably. if there were trousers that fit and we're comfy shed wear them.

But the OP isn't trying to get skirts removed from the uniform list. She just wants trousers to be an option.

Who said anything about removing skirts? Confused

I completely agree that kids should have the choice and wear what they feel comfy in. be it trousers or a skirt with or without shirts.

No mention of removing skirts..

I wish you well, though frankly I'd be keener on more schools have no uniform, especially at primary. Then everyone can dress according to the weather on any given day - kind of like how I do for work.

I have a primary aged DD who would be extremely distressed at the thought of having to wear a skirt, to the point of school refusal. Fortunately the schools in this area all have reasonable uniform policies.

I fully support a campaign for choice in school uniforms.

Hi, I agree that uniforms should as gender neutral as possible. Could I ask why the Facebook group is closed? People will be reluctant to join if they can't see the contents up front.

Lurkedforever1 · 09/10/2015 15:27

I'm only in favour of gender neutral if that includes skirts open to all, rather than trousers for all.

Report
thatstoast · 09/10/2015 15:37

Good point lurked. I think sometimes gender neutral just means 'let's behave/dress like a male".

The op has said they don't want to ban skirts though.

Report
trousersforall · 09/10/2015 15:38

What I have said I want is a gender neutral uniform list that allows
Pupils to choose what they feel most comfortable wearing

Shouldn't boys be allowed to wear shorts in the summer? Wouldn't that be the equivalent of the skirts that girls can wear?
