I have joined this site because im out of ideas and so desperate for help. Please.
My second baby- girl this time- has not slept for the entire 14 weeks of her life.
Colic or reflux or both or whatever. The gp and health visitor have a different theory and different prescription to try every time i see them. I have told them how much i am struggling and it makes no difference.

I have tried EVERY product available to stop her 247 fidgeting and crying. I have tried EVERY method in the world to calm her.
I have not slept for 48hours at all. This evening i fell on the floor crying and weeping with exhaustion whilst she wiggled all over her cot. She permanently has her hands all over her face during feeding and sleeping. She wiggles in her sleep and all the time shes awake.
There is no family support locally and i cannot stop crying.
When does this end? When will she relax? Its nearly 2am and i have been trying to pacify her for 7hours straight.
Please please dont say anything rude or unhelpful i am so desperate for someone to tell me that they have experienced this too.
All day she cries and all night if i dare lay my head on my pillow its for a minute before shes wiggling and climbing out of her blankets again.
Im so shattered i dont know who i am anymore

Controversial but you could try letting her sleep on her tummy....transformed life when I had no3 and I so wished I'd done it for no1! Good luck

Just seeing your post now. Felt like crying for you there. I went through the same with my 2nd. Can honestly say the first 6 mths of her life are a complete blur. I think she was lactose intolerent. I continued to bf for 5mths as I had for my first. For the life of me now I can't understand why I didn't try to get her that lactose free formula. The only excuse I have is that I was so utterly sleep deprived that I was incapable of making a decision. I really hope the formula works for you. Regardless it does get better. Hang in there x

How are things going? I was right not to wet excited as my little one has taken a step back now Ranitidine is out system and seems sore! So considering asking for the milk that you mentioned too so wondering if it’s made any difference to you? Hope you’re having a better time of it now!

@Alwaystired4

Ahhhh! So happy for you! Fingers crossed the corner has been turned and things are looking better. I honestly felt for you as I was in exactly the same position until three nights ago. Ranitidine may be the culprit again (although wrong dosage for your little one).

The last three months have been amongst the worst of my life. People tell you to enjoy the early days but when your baby doesn’t sleep and is unsettled/screaming/crying 24/7 you wish the days away.

Please keep the post updated in a few days to let us know if the improvement has continued xxx

I’m so sorry you feel like this the early days are hard and as you will see from everyone posts something different works for every baby and everyone is give different advice.

We found that infacol clogged our little boy up and made matters worse. Aptimel also made him sick so we changed to hipp organic which he kept down fine.

We were told not to use hungry baby milk and sits in their tummies for longer which is not really a good thing.

My little boy also broke out of a lot of swaddles and would only sleep in what became known as his ‘fish suit’ as we thought he looked like memo which was a love to swaddle up sleeping bag. We did found with anything new we needed to try it out for a couple of nights. The sleeping bag took 3 nights before he would sleep in it.

Our little boy also had a dummy in the early days to settle himself. Again he didn’t take to it straight away but certainly helped.

The tough thing in the early days is they wake up every 2-3 hours for a bottle so once that done and they are changed etc and you’d drop of the cycle starts again!

The best thing I can advise that we did was to start a bedtime routine even if you know baby won’t sleep the familiarity starts to build. From 9 weeks we did bath, massage sometimes story, bed in the cosleeper with the video monitor on. Sometimes we spent hours laid next to him to get him to sleep. Other times we got tea before he woke up. We tried to instil a policy of once you’ve gone to bed you don’t come out the room... and he did struggle to sleep in front of the TV but on the odd occasion the only way I got my tea was with him up in the living room.

Good luck and keep talking. Let us know how you get on x

Hey everyone thank you so so much for all ur replies. Its been the hardest three months of my life.
The gp finally gave us a very fancy hypoallergenic formula today in a gold tin (i forget the name) and theres been no screaming this afternoon or this evening. And it turned out her ranitidine was completely the wrong dosage!
I am so glad i found this site its truly been so exhausting beyond all belief and reason.
Im hoping i can finally start to get to know my daughter as a proper little lady xxxxxxxxx every single reply has been so friendly and so sweet. You all honestly made me feel a million times better

I could have written this. Honestly. Please read my reply. My son is 14 weeks old too and up until two nights ago this was him. We tried every formula available and he was on both Ranitidine and Infant Gaviscon for silent reflux. Gripe water. Infacol. Colief. Raising mattress. Etc.

I had an actual breakdown on Friday night - I couldn’t do it anymore. Much like you. I cried so hard I couldn’t stop and my husband heard from our bedroom and came and demanded I go to bed even though he’d had no sleep either....

On Saturday we decided something needed to give. We decided to stop the Ranitidine. Not recommended without GP advice I know but we had to do something. Changing one thing at a time seemed most sensible option.

So we stopped Ranitidine. I looked in to bedtime routines and best bedtimes for age. (8pm to 10pm apparently).

Saturday night I gave him a bath. Baby massage (this is new for us) then bottle for around 7.30pm. Then he stayed awake until 9.30pm and had a top up bottle.

And... he slept. soundly and silently which he hasn’t done. Ever. He has done this two nights in a row now. (trying not to get excited). Up twice for bottles but settling in between.

I don’t know if it’s just the stopping of Ranitidine (he was on this from 4weeks old) or the colief kicking in (he’s only been on this a week) or the Gaviscon kicking in (he’s only been on this a week too) or the baby massage or maybe just coincidence with his age but something has settled him. We also looked in to baby schedules (baby centre website has example schedules for 3 month olds with rough nap times, awake times etc).

We are currently using Hipp Organic Hungry Baby, Infant Gaviscon and Colief - all on advice of HV. Along with baby massage and putting him down between 8-10pm this seems to have worked. Check out babysleepmadesimple it’s free videos that help with best ways to help baby sleep.

Please don’t lose hope. Make small changes. It just so happened first thing we tried seemed to work (bet I’ve jinxed myself now).

Let me know how you get on please!

also, soy based formula is not recommended because over 60% of babies with a cows milk allergy also have a soy allergy. And there are some concerns about the oestrogen effects of soy milk.

Don't let your GP try to fob you off with a cheaper formula: soy based, lactose free, or similar.

If your baby has a cows milk PROTEIN allergy a lactose free (milk sugar) formula milk will make no difference

Ranitidine made my DD worse too - she spent the WHOLE DAY screaming when we gave it to her. Honestly up there as a contender for worst day of my life!

Omeprazole made an instant difference and got gradually better and better as it takes 5-6 weeks to reach full effectiveness. Plus you need to keep putting the dosage up as they put on weight.

I would definitely push for omeprazole and highly hydrolysed milk - I think maybe it's called Peptic something Confused Basically the milk protein needs to be really broken down so it doesn't irritate the gut lining and induce a delayed immune response (Non IG allergic reaction if you want to be technical Grin)

Don't take NO for an answer!!!!!!!

Good luck Flowers

The only thing that ever settled my baby during this phase was cooled camomile tea (in caffeinated obv..), which the health visitor recommended. Hed be screaming for hours, have 2oz of tea and settle within twenty minutes.

ThanksThanksWinefor you, tis a hard hard stage xxx

Another vote for cmpa...if go won't prescribe then buy a tin and test for yourself. If you notice a difference (maybe keep a diary or film her) then straight back to the GPs and simply refuse to leave until they give it to you.

DD has cmpa but was admitted to a and e so we didn't have to fight for the milk, but the peadiatrition told me that most mum's struggle as gps won't prescribe it simply because it's expensive and eats into their budget. Don't let them for you off anymore.

How awful, cows milk protein allergy is my first thought that it could be with the constant squirming. There are some great Facebook groups on it if you have facebook with other mummies who can help you find the right milk for your child. Unfortunately you might have to really push your gp to prescribe new formula but don't give up! Also would suggest getting checked for tongue tie as this can cause issues with taking in too much air and causing reflux. Hang in there

I went to my GP and begged for a two week trial of dairy free milk. The difference became apparent very quickly and we never looked back. Ds used to scream, awful high pitched screaming for hours on end. It was hideous and like you, I was desperate. The GP seemed to be able to handle the thought of a two week trial - I was at the point where I wasn't going to leave until I got that prescription

Thanks everyone, youve all been so friendly and genuine. I shud have mentioned hubby is really good but he has a viral bug atm. He's upstairs shivering in bed like a an arctic penguin.
I've tried every formula and every medicine. Ranitidine made her scream the house down so i guess the only other things to try are hypoallergenic formula or/and omprazole!
Thank u so much everyone i will go back to my gp on monday- shes sick of seeing me :( can see on her face everytime i go in shes thinkin 'oh its that mad woman and her baby again'!
This is my second baby and such a shock to the system because my son just used to sleep and guzzle milk all day!

If you are ff try comfort milk. One of our twins was like this at first, and the combination of comfort milk, anti colic mam bottles and sleeping her as upright as possible ( we propped her bouncer chair up a little) improved matters. I feel for you, but I promise this won't last xxx

Why are you the only one trying yo settle her? Why can't her daddy? You need some sleep my lovely, it takes two to make a baby and she has two parents. I used to get my dh to take baby downstairs so I could get a good chunk of sleep, that was even with baby being ebf!

Sending big hugs xx

Ok tomorrow morning get your partner to take your child out for the day, does she have formula? You need a decent sleep - my husband did this for me when DD literally slept four hours a night so was up at 4am every morning and I found that exhausting which is far more than you're getting. She got to about 3.5 months and suddenly switched and slept 12 hours straight! I hope this happens for you Thanks

By the way I literally spent all my spare time winding my child, she still is very windy now ay 9 Wink

Sorry you are having a tough time OP Flowers. My dd is similar as she has reflux sleeps very little unless forced to sleep. Things that have worked are gaviscon, white noise (Ollie the owl), daytime naps in the sling or pushchair and the sleepyhead at night. She wouldn't sleep at all at night until we got the sleepyhead so it was a good investment. We are also seeing a cranial osteopath, have only had one session so far but in the 4 days since she has been much calmer and thrashes about a lot less. The night after the session she slept 5 hours straight, she'd not slept more than 2 hours before that.

I hope you find something that works and manage to get some sleep soon. It's horrible but it will get better.

Don't let your GP fob you off.... mine did, despite the fact I used to work in HV! I was so tired and exhausted that I didn't put up a fight - went to see GP at 5 weeks old and was dismissed and told i needed to "adjust my expectations"

Struggled on for another 3 weeks until we went to a&e in desperation.

Still so angry that my baby had to suffer an extra 3 weeks of pain because of that stupid GP.

You are not going mad. You are not imagining things. Your baby is not meant to be this unsettled. Something is causing it (silent reflux? Cows milk protein allergy?)

Once the cause it addressed it WILL get better. Hang in there

Report
Absofrigginlootly · 17/12/2017 04:05

I've been where you are. My Lo had horrible silent reflux, cows milk protein and soy allergies, comic and was 75% tongue tied (anterior and posterior).

The things that helped were:

Omeprazole. She needed 20mg to achieve symptom control. My GP was less than useless. We presented to a&he because she wouldn't stop crying and they sent us to the Paeds as area where she was immediately diagnosed.

I was exclusively BF so went on a very strict dairy and soy exclusion diet.

Let her sleep upright on my chest while I slept upright propped up against some pillows in the middle of the double bed with my hands locked around her (fingers interlinked). No duvets or pillows near her. Wasn't ideal. But she literally would not sleep unless held. DH was away for work a lot and i was alone and almost hallucinating from lack of sleep.

Read the book 'colic solved' all about silent reflux. Written by a Paediatrician gastroenterologist who had a child of his own with reflux!!

If you are FF I would get some gaviscon, omeprazole and if that doesn't help, get a prescription for some highly hydrologysed formula milk (the milk protein is really broken down - the Paeds can prescribe it for you).

You will survive this I promise Flowers Cake Brew
