moses basket at 6mo? and how do i move to cot?

Hi Smile some probably silly questions but would love to see if I'm thinking about this in the right way.

the cot won't fit in our room so I was hoping to keep DD in Moses basket in our room til 6mo. she's quite small so I think by 6mo she'd be about 15lb. length wise I think she'll just about fit til then. Is there any reason why I can't do this? I'm planning to put it on the floor soon instead of on the stand.

also some Qs about moving her to the cot. we have a sheepskin in her basket at the moment so I plan to take that out soon (she's 4mo), then have her on her mattress in her Moses basket, then put basket in cot in her own room at 6mo, then put her in the cot. sound about right?

thanks Smile

Dd was in her moses basket until she was nearly 7 months. She slept in it like a dream so I was reluctant to move her but she was getting too big. She wouldn't settle in the cot at first because she'd just roll around, I think she likes to be snuggles against something so dh used my pregnancy pillow to make a nest shape in the cot then covered it with a tightly tucked in single bed sheet so it wouldn't move. She snuggled in to the side just like she did in the basket and slept well. It was hard having her in her own room at first as I had to go down the landing to settle her instead of just reaching in but she's got lots better at self settling and in the morning will chatter to herself for a good half hour or so before getting fed up and wanting a feed.

Both mine grew out of the moses basket because they were too wriggly rather than too young. Never had any problems with switching to the cot. I think I may have put the basket into the cot for a couple of nights with dd1. Didn't bother with dd2 though.

beginning to think my basket must be huge as she still has room!

You could also start having daytime naps in the cot way before night times.

Moses baskets do come in different sizes btw!

DS went into a cotbed in his own room at 3.5 months. He kept waking himself up in the crib flinging his arms about & hitting the sides. Didn't have space in our room for a cot so went into his own room. We put him into the cot a few times for naps before he moved in there so it would be familiar. He slept brilliantly in there from the first night.

DS was a small baby but was out of the Moses basket by 12weeks. he liked to role around, and one evening tipped the basket when he placed his bodyweight against the side. since then cot.

I just put him in the cot, no major drama.

I think a baby at 6 months would be mobile enough for a Moses basket to be a risk in terms of its low sides and also a baby moving around trying to roll, lying a bit sideways... The sides will be very restrictive. I put my DS in his actual cot by 8 weeks as he was very long and he just kept bashing the sides of the basket and hated it. He was absolutely fine in the cot, arms spread out and comfy! Thing is you won't know if you don't try, and you can always go back if it doesn't work. DS barely registered the change to his cot nor the change to his own room at 8 months, he just did it and in both cases slept better overall.

It's not just about size but their movement too, if they begin rolling or can pull up to sitting it can be a risk.

Dgd is 6 months, and just about fits in her basket. She loves it, and sleeps well in it, but I think her dm is planning on trying her in her cot soon. She doesn't seem to like the extra space in her cot, and we are currently trying to think of ways around this, but in a month or so there will be no way of squeezing her into the basket and move she will Smile

hmmm maybe our Moses basket is bigger as im certain she'll fit for a while yet!

last night I removed the sheepskin preparing myself for a rough night... she was completely fine!

bit nervous about how she'll feel in a huge cot bed though?

Hmm my lo is a tiny baby and outgrew his a long time ago...it wasn't so much the length more the fact that he spreads his arms out and was hitting the sides, waking himself up. he is now 6mo and 13lb and in his cot. we just moved him in there one night and that was that! think he appreciated the space tbh!

It's a long time ago now but pretty sure 6 months is too big for a Moses basket, babies tend to be pretty chunky by then.

Mind you it was so long ago, I'll shut up and let someone else answer Grin
