GUILTY of buying almost all of this for my no1 son. Nappy bin was the biggest waste of money and space - and just horrible to empty. Why would you want a big bucket of poop lurking in the corner of the room?

We had a baby bath with one of those baby sun lounger bath support things. Brilliant as it was the only way you could bath twins while alone in the house (otherwise you have to hold the one in the bath constantly and can't stop the other one trying to climb into the loo or whatever).

Instead of the pram suit we had Star Wraps and they were awesome. Our kids' first winter they wore them every afternoon for the last nap of the day. Quick walk up to the Croydon Waitrose, bit of shopping and say hello to the nice lady at the tills, and then they'd snuggle in and sleep for 45 minutes while I walked round Park Hill in the gloaming. Happy times.

Some of those things are useful.

Lots of cot blankets - great if you have a pukey baby, can also use in pram

Baby bath - essential for me - had builders in fixing the bathroom for weeks

Moses basket - again very useful for a small prem baby who needed some cosy ness. Could have fitted 10 babies his size in the cot!!! Also essential for those who can't fit a cot in their own bedroom in the early days.

Cot mobile - ds adored this. I wound it up and it played long enough to entertain ds whilst I was in the loo. It was used so much it broke so we replaced it!

Sock ons are brilliant! My baby can defeat them on occasions but 90% of the time they work.

This is a terrible list. Moses basket - great. Still using it with DD and she's four months. I refuse to buy a crib bed thing and a cot is too big so when the basket gets too small, she's moving to her own room.

Baby bath - loved it with DS. No space to store it with DD but was sad as ours could be placed on a stand too which really helped with my back.

Nappy bin - could not live without. Keeps smells in and I don't have to hassle out to the outside bin every time.

Crib blankets - we have loads and it's great. I can obsessively adjust for slight temperature fluctuations and we always have a spare one lurking in the car or a changing bag or whatever. Plus every now and again she vomits or poos on everything and you need backups. I also have a lovely few that were knitted by a family friend. Too hot for current weather but really lovely when out and about in the pram.

Admitteldy, you don't need loads, but a mobile or two are great. we have one on DD's pram which keeps her entertained and will have another on her cot when we put it up.

So that's five things I'd consider great and/or essential. Maybe I'm just a sucker for these things?!

And my daughter was bathed in her baby bath until she was a year old! She used to cry if I put her in the big tub and there was no way I'd risk being shat on if I joined her, and she loved the baby bath, so there you have it!

I actually found 6 of those things very very useful, 7 if you change out Moses basket for crib.

I've kind of accepted those kinds of baths are gone for a few years lol.

My dd1 hated the bath with the baby bath but dd2 has always loved the water. I'm not sure if it's due to her water birth or co bathing or just her temperament but I think she always felt more supported lying on me than in the baby bath.
It's a very personal choice though. Usually hubby takes the kids out and I get 10 mins in the bath where I top it up with roasty water and some bubbles.

I like my baths hot, bubbly, relaxing and totally un-weed in. If I had a bath I would be in it alone

Hated Moses the first time. Bought a snuzpod the second time and love it.
Used baby bath for the first week the first time. Second time just took baby in bath with me once a week.
Love changing table. Used it til dd1 was potty trained and using it loads again now with dd2.
Love my nappy bin. Live in a flat and it's so much easier.

Baby bath lovers, do you not just share a bath with your baby? I always like the fact that for 5 minutes every evening there was a time when neither of us had a trace of sick, wee or poo on us.

Has no one mentioned baby socks yet, and those crazy things that you put over baby socks to keep them on.

Agree that babygrows are a massive pita. They only fit for about 5 mins, especially if your baby has flipper feet, are a nightmare to put on and if the baby's sick the whole sodding lot has to be changed.
Bathing in the sink was something I did once. The baby (2mo) spent the entire time trying to turn the hot tap on and the whole thing looked incredibly uncomfortable.

I love our nappy bin. Very handy, keeps all the smells in, clean and hygienic, not much bother to empty every few days. Also very handy for used tampons and condoms; in fact, we may keep it after DS2 is tt just for that

Ha my DSis was telling me the other day that someone has bought her newborn a bathrobe. Size 0-3m. In this heat! Double pointless!

Hehehe, this is great...if I had come across flipflops I would have too! I had a teeny newborn bathrobe....never got worn either...it now goes on our small dog after his bath.

Well the bath and the bin were things I went out and bought after I had a baby, because I recognized a need for them - and I used the hell out of both.

A snow suit/pram suit was essential, because it would get really cold where we lived. Like, -25C cold. So, snow suit and blanket. I could have used the wipe warmer, for the same reason; our bathroom had no heat and very, very cold wipes probably aren't much fun.

And I LOATHE sleep suits. Has anybody who inflicts them on their baby ever tried sleeping in footed pajamas? Try it once and you'll never put your child in one again. When I see a baby wearing one I assume wonder if the parent just couldn't be bothered dressing them. A simple dress in the summer, or leggings and a top, is easier and probably a lot more comfortable.

have you ever seen the "mop" outfit? Basically it's a baby grow with some fluffy cloth bits attached strategically so as the baby crawls they also wipe the floor for you!
No doubt it's been invented by the same genius minds who thought of taking the dog for a walk on a running machine, indoors!

I don't understand why people don't use baby baths - why on earth would you fill an adult bath to wash a tiny baby?? The money you would waste heating the water, ridiculous!

Another fan of the Moses basket here - nearly 4 month old still on hers - bought from John Lewis as it was longer.

Our changing table is also a useful chest of drawers!

Definitely haven't even considered the nappy bins though - they are pointless! A nice £10 pedal bin from Argos does the trick for us!!

7. Baby lotion? Why bother when there are wipes
I think I was using it wrong. It's a useless moisturiser is it supposed to clean the baby?
I found the Moses basket useful and the baby bath- but we don't have an actual bath (still in use at 20m). It came with a top and tail bowl if we're talking pointless.
I stopped using the baby thermometer when I put the baby in a too hot bath because the thermometer takes so long to settle on a read.

The most ridiculous thing I ever saw was a rigid holder for drinks cartons to stop them picking it up and squeezing juice all over the place. I thought of that when DD2 and DS covered themselves in ribena yesterday. They're 15 and 16
