So if the power went off (indefinitely) how long would you last on the basis of what you have in the house?

So the power's gone off. Everything is suddenly dead, shops can't sell you anything since the electronic tills don't work, petrol pumps don't work, lifts don't work, traffic lights don't work, tap water won't last for long since the pumps won't work, mobile phones won't work, gas/electric heating won't work (and most oil and solar systems also need mains electricity to make them work unless they're off grid systems) - MN won't work!!

How long could you last with what you have?

There are no zombies, this isn'"t necessarily a "top yourself now - who would want to live?" scenario since the power could be restored at any time….or it could last months…

Yes I will never forget that film they showed at school about the nuclear war "Threads" I think? Utterly terrifying. Quite why they felt it necessary to show to children I'm not sure - would have been better making all the adults watch it (which probably would have been possible given that we only had three channels in those days!)

Why do you think I have a Plan B?

I've lived with possibility of nuclear armageddon for all of my 'aware' life but it would be paralysing to think constantly that you and everything around you might be zapped in the next 10 minutes. There's a balance to be struck - and that balance is down to the individual I guess.

Have downloaded the whole of wikipedia onto a memory stick. So now I will be able to look up 'how to skin & cook a bunny' using laptop & solar panel.

I hope you have well-considered plans to protect both the laptop and the solar panel, Littleham ? No point in firing up the laptop and looking for instructions while someone is smashing your windows in......

Not good with violence. Don't like blood or pain in others so might have to leave that to DH.

I have tried out those water filtration straws. They are awesome. You can drink pure water from a puddle.

And keeping a good eye on any friends or family who have special dietary needs - because those won't any longer be capable of being met unless you have suitable tins in stock.

I live in them thar hills. We keep chickens & are surrounded by rabbits, pheasants & grouse. I have a solid fuel 2 oven stove & hob, C1945 & we have huge, ancient sycamores that could lose a branch or two. We're on our own spring for water, have a septic tank. In the lounge we have a log burner. We also keep a veg. patch & have a good fruit garden: Apple trees, cherry trees, pear tree, red currants, jostaberries, gooseberries & lots of herbs, chives etc.
Our neighbour, not us, keeps goats, so I'm sure that we could barter something for milk/cheese.
Right, I'm just off to knit some yoghurt

I seem to remember when I was a kid and it was the hurricane after math or was it drought in the south east, I was only little and I'm sure my parents told me that the water board set up some kind of standpipe or pump on some streets and people queued to get buckets of water to flush their toilets and to drink. , maybe something like that will happen
