Created for Adapt

This is the feedback thread for Mumsnet users with children in years 10, 11, 12, or 13 who took part in a product test of Adapt, a revision timetable app.

Testers, you can now share your feedback. Please do so by answering the below questions, as well as giving your feedback via the short survey we’ve emailed you.

  • Was your child more organised and in control of their revision while using the app?
  • Did you find the app helped you support your child with their learning and revision?
  • What were your favourite features of the Adapt app?
  • Would you recommend Adapt to other parents? If yes, why?

Here’s what Adapt has to say:
"Want to be more involved with what your child is learning at school and revising at home? Which topics they’re covering and where they need additional support? As a revision app, we get questions from students all the time - but actually, we get even more questions from parents asking how they can support their children through exams. That’s why we’ve developed Adapt for Parents - now, we need your help to ensure we get it right!"

All testers who complete the required feedback will receive a £10 amazon voucher and be entered into a prize draw to win a £100 voucher (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

Hi, thanks for the opportunity to test the App
we thought that a Desktop version would be great as we use a laptop to learn

we might have missed this but is there a social feature to learn together with others? I think there was a waiting list to access this when my son checked

To us it seemed like an expensive calendar, with some reminders but we didn’t see a huge added value to justify the £9.99 a month, sorry
It would be amazing to be able to access some actual content rather than just the subject topic or even perhaps mock tests on the app?

thank you for having us on the testing team, we will continue testing since you kindly offered an extra month

Thanks for the opportunity to use the app. It could be brilliant once the content is on there so will def check back in once some A level content is on.

Was your child more organised and in control of their revision while using the app?
Yes definitely helped with organisation skills.

Did you find the app helped you support your child with their learning and revision?
A little but would be better with content.

What were your favourite features of the Adapt app?
Giving structure, routine and reminders.

Would you recommend Adapt to other parents? If yes, why?
Yes. Really useful and user friendly. Love that it links to parent account so I can keep tabs on it.

Hi there
Thanks for the chance to test the Adapt app.
It's a great way to set out a timetable for revision and not feeling bogged down with doing too many subjects at once. The pace could be set according to individual learning.
My son has anxiety which is easily escalated when faced with tests or exams of any kind, so he really didn't want to engage too much with this app. Perhaps it could include ways of taking time out and not being too hard on oneself like mini games. Ultimately, anything that can help to lessen anxiety and stress is a good thing for our children when going through this phase of their life.
I do not feel that it would be worth £9.99 unless there were options to print out past papers or do revision exercises.

Thanks so much for giving us the opportunity for this!
Was your child more organised and in control of their revision while using the app? Yes, noticeably so which helped dramatically as we have just started the Mocks

Did you find the app helped you support your child with their learning and revision? A little - we did have to go off to youtube or google more than I would like but obviously as more stuff comes on it'll help.

What were your favourite features of the Adapt app?
The reminders!

Would you recommend Adapt to other parents? If yes, why? I think once there was more on the app I would. Currently it did help a little in reminders but with time we could set this up on his phone anyhow so for 9.99 a month it seemed rather over priced. As Tracey above has said if we could access past papers etc that would be superb!

Was your child more organised and in control of their revision while using the app?

no - it didn’t add anything beyond an excel version he’d already created

Did you find the app helped you support your child with their learning and revision?

no - we were expecting to be able to add in exam board information on content per paper etc but couldn’t do this consistently

What were your favourite features of the Adapt app?

reminders were good but could set up on phone

Would you recommend Adapt to other parents? If yes, why?

not in its current format, it needs more content, with all modules from all exam boards and past papers etc

Im not sure that the app made my child more organised as she doesnt seem to have completed many tasks on the app. It helped her keep track of some things.

I found the app a bit confusing to use so couldnt workout howto use ut to help my daughter. I think thats because she hasnt put many tasks into the app.

The favourite features are the daily reminders- a gentle nudge to get things done.

I wouldnt necessarily recommend this no- my daughter has similar apps to use vua school which are free so we wouldn't pay for something like this at the moment

Wow, thank you so much for giving me and my son the opportunity to try this app out
I had hoped it would encourage my Son to use the app and bribe him with the free voucher!!😂

The app helped my son be more organised but he doesn't seem to have completed many tasks on the app. It was good to see what he has and hasn't done and with him knowing I had the app made him so something!

The favourite features are the daily reminders to ensure he completes the tasks.

I wouldnt necessarily recommend this app as my son has free apps to use from school and I wouldn't be able to afford it if I'm honest.Sorry, great to try though so thank u

Was your child more organised and in control of their revision while using the app?
Kinda of. Freddie liked that he could put what homework/revision he needed to do in whatever days he chose, but as he is autistic and not doing 'normal' courses, he was slightly annoyed he couldn't find his actual courses on the app, which meant that he couldn't add in all his revision. But it did help him to remember to do the stuff we could find.

Did you find the app helped you support your child with their learning and revision?
Yes. Fred liked the hints, and he really liked that he could tell me he was doing with a subject just by pushing a smiling or frowning face.

What were your favourite features of the Adapt app?
I liked that I could see what he was doing, and he liked the freedom to be in control of his own learning. Our favourite feature was the happy, neutral, sad faces.

Would you recommend Adapt to other parents? If yes, why?
I'm not sure. I don't think most teenagers would use it tbh, and if their parents forced them, they would probably just write that they had completed their revision without doing it. It's a good idea, but I don't think it would work for anyone I know.

Was your child more organised and in control of their revision while using the app?
As my child is organised without the app I didn't see any changes.

Did you find the app helped you support your child with their learning and revision?
Yes and no. App itself is a little confusing and you need to spend some time to figure it out that most parents don't have.

What were your favourite features of the Adapt app?
Reminders and that you can see what your child is doing.

Would you recommend Adapt to other parents? If yes, why?
I don't think I will recomend it for 9.99 but maybe free. Not enough material and not the best presentation, often need to go on YouTube, you can access it free, not easy to navigate and no test or mocks to check your knowledge. My child preferred app that she is using true school.

I would recommend the app and definitely keep using it.

My daughter found it useful the way tasks could be broken down into daily steps. It is great for parents who need to be able to monitor what their children are doing or want to understand more about the topics they are studying. I would recommend it to others but it is expensive and would need to have more content to justify this price.

Was your child more organised and in control of their revision while using the app?
I don't think so as he seems to already have his own way of revising and I'm not sure that the app adds much more value to that at the moment.

Did you find the app helped you support your child with their learning and revision?
It doesn't seem to even though I have checked in with him. There has been some activity on there, but I find it quite confusing.

What were your favourite features of the Adapt app?
I like the progress tab and the confidence rating

Would you recommend Adapt to other parents? If yes, why?
Yes, if their student is struggling with staying on top of revision.

I do need to get to grips with this app a little more though. I think DS pretty much gets it, but I have peri menopause brain and at the moment I can't understand anything! Thanks for the trial, we shall persevere.

I think this is a helpful app for keeping an eye on what your child should be learning. My daughter’s course content is due to be added in January. I would also agree that past papers would be a useful resource.

Report
CyclingMumKent · 11/11/2022 19:58

We also found that a child could mark the task as completed even if he hasn’t, so it would be better to actually have some checkpoints or tests before a task is mark as completed

Thanks for the opportunity to test out the app.

Was your child more organised and in control of their revision while using the app?

I sadly don't think so! It helped in one way as she wasn't keen on the app when she looked at it so designed her own timetable on Excel which seems to be working.

Did you find the app helped you support your child with their learning and revision?

No. I had hoped there would be features such as tests and content for the price but no (unless we didn't find it?). We logged all her exam boards (which wasn't as straightforward as it might be as we couldn't find them all) but the lack of any content was really off putting and she didn't really use it at all sadly.

What were your favourite features of the Adapt app?

I like the confidence ratings.

Would you recommend Adapt to other parents? If yes, why? Sadly not. It just doesn't add enough value for the cost and even free, she isn't using it at all now. Sorry.

Was your child more organised and in control of their revision while using the app?

I would like to say she was but unfortunately no. She found it a huge hinderance trying to set it up. Some of her GCSE subjects were not there (business studies stands out to me). It was also very time consuming.

Did you find the app helped you support your child with their learning and revision?

No it annoyed her and just didn't work for her. On a plus side since trying this she has been more pro active in organising herself in the good old fashioned way so am really pleased with that.

What were your favourite features of the Adapt app?

That I could see what she was doing...or not!

Would you recommend Adapt to other parents? If yes, why?

No sorry it is a good idea in principal but I don't think it works in practice (without even mentioning the monetary costs)

Thanks for selecting me. It was very interesting to trial.

What were your favourite features of the Adapt app?
being able to add subjects to a specific day
Would you recommend Adapt to other parents? If yes, why?

Was your child more organised and in control of their revision while using the app?
Not really - after a promising start she got frustrated with it, but seems to have organised herself outside of the app rather better than I was expecting, her mocks finish on Thursday so time will tell!

Did you find the app helped you support your child with their learning and revision?
We found it difficult to set up - there didn't seem to be much content available when we installed it, and this put her off so she hasn't used it too much. The green/amber/red smiley faces were useful as it highlighted areas she could concentrate on when revising, but there were a lot of them, and I know she marked anything the teachers said wasn't being covered in these mocks as green, even if that's not actually how she feels about it, so going back to use it for the real exams in summer might give an unrealistic idea of how confident she feels about the other topics and skew her revision timetable.

What were your favourite features of the Adapt app?
The coloured faces.

Would you recommend Adapt to other parents? If yes, why?
Not at the moment - I was expecting there to be a lot more content available, not having it really put DD off using it. Most of her courses said "coming in October", but were still not there at the end of the month, which didn't fill me with confidence. It seems expensive for what you currently get.

Thanks for the chance to test this app, I think it's a really good idea in principle, but needs a bit more work to reach its potential. As a couple of PPs said, things like example exam questions/past papers would be useful, along with model answers against different grades (if these exist, we didn't find them!).

Was your child more organised and in control of their revision while using the app?
No. My daughter was another one who found it frustrating. We spent a lot of time looking for content which seemed to be missing, meaning it really was just working like a calender at the moment. My daughter has a revision planner already so this didn't add any value for us.

Did you find the app helped you support your child with their learning and revision?
No. As above. If it had content I think it would be great but as it is it really didn't provide anything new or that we don't already have access to.

What were your favourite features of the Adapt app?
The smiley faces.

Would you recommend Adapt to other parents? If yes, why?
Not at the moment - once content is available we'd love to try it again though.

As other posters have said, it's a great idea but it's just not ready yet. Either that or the content is too well hidden!

Was your child more organised and in control of their revision while using the app?
my daughter in year 13 was already aware of and using Adapt and likes using it and said it really helped
Did you find the app helped you support your child with their learning and revision?
it helped me keep track on how she was doing and feeling about study so that I could support her where I could .
What were your favourite features of the Adapt app?
i can see how daughter is coping and if she’s where she should be with revision. This is really guided so really useful to her and me
Would you recommend Adapt to other parents? If yes, why?

it’s quite a lot to spend out a month but it does help. I’m quite lucky in that my daughter likes studying but can imagine this would come in useful to parents even more if their kids were not keen.

Thanks for giving us the opportunity to test this app. I tested it with 14 year old DS2.

  1. DS was a little more organised, yes. However he (and I) found the app confusing to work out to start with and he says he could have done with a tutorial being included to demonstrate the whole site and how to use it to maximum advantage.
  2. DS is a very independent learner so I don’t really get involved with his learning and revision. However, I think it’s a great idea and clever concept that there’s a parent login as well as a student login, so that parents can support.
  3. DS and I are in agreement that our favourite feature is the depth of information available on the site for so many different exam syllabuses. However there is hardly anything available for non premium customers (unless I’ve missed something) - I would say that the app is just a pretty calendar unless paying for the premium content. In fact, because we both found it quite hard to navigate initially, to start with DS thought that even with premium content it was just a calendar.
  4. I think I I would recommend Adapt to other parents in terms of letting them know it exists in case they want to try it and see if it suits them. I’m not sure I’d recommend it as something that DS and I found helpful and would continue using. Two things stand out in particular - one, that it’s all on a phone. DS revises on a laptop and I’m not sure he would manage to revise on his phone. Could the app be made available for laptops/desktop computers? The other thing is the price. £9.99 per month seems extremely expensive. DS’s school puts all of his work online so the only thing that Adapt would add in its current form is the integrated revision calendar. PPs have suggested adding past papers to the content - I agree that this would be an excellent idea.

In all honesty, I just couldn’t get my child to engage with it. She’s in year 10. She’s normally good at schoolwork and the only issue we have is organisation. I really thought this would be excellent for her as it’s an app and on her phone. I think she got completely overwhelmed with the choices and just couldn’t get to grips with how it was organised. I tried sitting with her to go through the app but unfortunately she really wasn’t on board. I took some time to check out some of the features and I can see how it would help some children, but it is quite complicated if you’re not naturally an organised person. I think part of her issue was also that I could see what she would be doing, and she doesn’t like that level of scrutiny!
