Low-carb bootcamp

Week 8 - Pre-summer Low Carb Bootcamp

Morning all!

The Spreadsheet of Fabulousness is here

Looks, at last, as if we have a bit of sunshine - at least Darn Sarf.

A bit of a less fraught week for me, so it may even be possible that I hit the gym mid-week, which I haven't done for months.

I'm avoiding the scales this Bootcamp, but tried on a couple of dresses I bought a few weeks ago, which were a little on the tight side. One of them fits perfectly now, and the other one is almost there, so I know things are working. But I know that I've a way to go before I'm 'there'!

Hope those of you who are weighing have a good result today!

Here's to another successful week.

Flowers

Totally missed weigh in this week. Was the same. Fingers crossed for tomorrow.

I have had a dreadful week. It's the first week of the school holidays and was ds3's birthday. I have had all sorts that I shouldn't have had. I think I will re-do bootcamp for the next two weeks. I'm sure tomorrow's weight will reflect this. Aargh!

Back on track today, I think, although dairy heavy. Cramps and tiredness have gone and not too much of a carb hangover from the weekend's excesses.

Did Zumba and yoga and I did next week's meal plans and grocery order before this week's was even delivered, which is a first! Have got three stricter Uber days coming up which I'm weirdly looking forward to. Made BIWI's red cabbage recipe which was lovely, although mine started to stick with just the butter/oil so I added the wine vinegar after 10 mins rather than 20. Have saved the other half of the cabbage for coleslaw.

B: FF Greek yoghurt with splash of cream and vanilla, coffee with cream
L: cheese and bacon omelette, half an avocado, salad, coffee with cream
D: salmon fillet baked with red pesto and creme fraiche, braised red cabbage, broccoli
S: none yet, will watch a film this eve and have either a coyo or two squares 80% dark choc

Ok, I hate roast radishes Grin luckily I also roasted some celeriac to go with my chicken thighs.

Thanks BIWI. Finished breastfeeding last week but think going to try BC light first anyway as it's easier with being a veggie. I will see if this gives results and can change over if not. Making quorn stir fry with coconut oil tonight. Rice for DH and baby but not me of course. Is this ok?

Thanks stillloving, you too. Am going to do a version of Ubercamp Mon-Weds with little or no dairy (trying to decide whether to go all out and start drinking my coffee black!). I've also regretfully concluded that the alcohol is what has been throwing me off the past few weeks, where my weight has been bouncing about madly, so I'm going to go 'dry' again, just until the end of bootcamp...

Going to try roasting radishes today - do I just roast like I would any other veg?

Stillloving at maintenance you can either slightly increase your carbs (not being so strict about sausages, gravy etc, adding in small portions of white rice, carrots, sweet potatoes, apples etc.) or you can have a cheat meal or day every week or two. So long as you have regained your metabolic flexibility, i.e. you aren't insulin resistant, then you will still be burning fat so long as your carb and/or calorie intake doesn't get too high.

Bettyblue sorry to hear you've struggled a bit. We are in the same boat. I think weekends are the hardest!

The trick is to find meals that work for all of you - not end up cooking something just for you. Apart from the fact that you don't want to end up cooking more (especially with a new baby!), it also makes it seem more like a diet rather than just a new way of eating.

(By the way, if you're still breastfeeding, you might want to consider doing Bootcamp Light rather than Bootcamp)

Thanks GBBO, I'll have a look at it on amazon. I think my other big challenge will be having an almost one year old to cook for - we usually just all eat the same at dinner so need to try to adapt meals for everyone

GBBO - Rose Elliott has written a vegetarian low carb diet book, and also a recipe book to go with it - it might be worth trying to get hold of that? Some lovely recipes in there.

GBB, there is a link in the OP to a spreadsheet that you can enter your weight on and that also has tabs/links to a whole heap of information and rules for Bootcamp :)

Thanks BIWI.
Do you need info on my weight etc for the spreadsheet?
I've never done LC before but read a couple of books on it so think I understand the principles but maybe not the actual practicalities. I'm vegetarian which makes it harder. Do you have any advice to start me off? Should I be aiming for a certain % fat or counting fat grams? What should I be aiming for? Thank you

It is DH's birthday tomorrow and we are going out to a lovely restaurant. Am going to check menu online and plan ahead. Think I"ll allow myself the odd treat (either bread basket or pudding, say), but otherwise try to choose wisely. And then be really good for the rest of the day. Seems a bit miserable not to partake in the fun to a certain extent. They do have an amazing cheese board so that part is sorted in theory in case I look at the pudding menu and am drooling in uncontrollable way

Hi BIWI, can I join in or do I need to wait until the next bootcamp?

I also need to draw a veil over Friday night and Saturday: a BIG night out and then a day meandering between pubs with lovely walks in between. Really nice weekend but...

Was not intentionally eating LC food but I drank far far too much on Fri night and then was ravenous and trying to eat my way through hangover yesterday - made two slip ups that I thought would be LC and they weren't (coconut water - mistook per 100ml carbs for total carbs - and I misread 'Greek beans' as green beans - they turned out to be butter beans!). I'm surprised that I'm finding limiting alcohol by far the hardest part of this WOE as I don't drink at home and I did dry Jan fairly easily this year. But it's so closely linked to my social life and people think I'm being boring/faddish anyway with the carbs. I really need to just have one drink and then switch to water in future, but it's hard.

Oh dear!!!

The only way to recover is to get back on the wagon fast. Have a couple of super strict days. Lots of fat and lots of water. Any immediate weight gain won't be fat, but will be re-filling of your glycogen stores, so if you can up your exercise over the next few days that will also help.

Re fat-burning, as long as you keep relatively low carb I believe that you should remain fat-burning (but StuntNun might know more about the science behind this!) What you can't do, unless you want to re-gain all the weight you've lost, is go back to eating a high carb diet.

Not slipped up food wise but wine, oh wine. Not a good week either!

Advice needed: I have sinned too.
Last night friends came over and for some reason (my rebellious streak?) I made a super carb heavy dinner ie pasta / chocolate dessert etc.
Without going into any more gory details (!) what would you recommend I do today so that I can get back on track properly and with minimum damage?
Fasting for 10 hours?
Normal low carb day?
I've had some other exceptions over the 6 weeks but this was by far the worst. Not complaining as it was enjoyable but just wanting to get back on track properly.
And generally can I ask what happens to fat burning when one is on maintenance ie eating LC but once a day or once a week or whatever has some carbs?
