Cornwall councillor makes revolting comments to charity workers and refuses to step down. http://m.thisiscornwall.co.uk/story.html?aid=18257973 here

I feel like there should be more pressure put on him to go, but it seems that he'll get away with it Sad

Good, but far, far too late and he still comes across as being more concerned about how this has affected him rather that the victims of his comment.

God I feel sick sometimes at the crap people with disabilities and their families have to deal with :(

Did anyone read his "I want sympathy" comments at the end of that article? What an idiot.

Good news....he needed to go and should have realised it 18 months ago. Yes we all have bad days and all say silly things and stupid things but what he said was beyond the pale. He needs to educate himself rapidly about life for families with disabled children and life in general for adults with disabilities.

I get fed up with other people deciding what someone else's quality if life is. My mother does my head in about this as she will see someone severely physically disabled being taken shopping and say thu gs like "that can't be a good quality of life" Hmm. She has stopped doing it to me now as she says "I know you don't agree with me". No Mum I don't agree with you. How do you know what she one else's life is like? How can you judge it? Yes that man or woman might be very physically disabled, they may even have accompanying learning disabilities but nobody should judge life but the person themselves.

Instead ask how you can support the Carers of those who are very disabled.....or differently abled.

He has resigned according to the Beeb.

"I was wrong, I admit it," it took him EIGHTEEN MONTHS to realise this?

18 months for the complaint procedure? Hmm the cynic in me is thinking they wanted to make sure that this didnt come out before the Paralympics.

Also posted this on the SN board -

His email is [email protected]

Cornwall County Council's number is 0300 1234 100. I've just spoken to a very nice lady on the switchboard and there's a specific person dealing with complaints about Colin Brewer - she tried to put me through but the lines are very busy! She offered to put me through to the Legal Team as they're taking calls about this too but I said I'd rather call back.

Also this link has a complaint form along with the Member's Code of Conduct.

Let's not just post on here, let's make a fuss.

JB, yes. Basically there used to be a national body with the power to suspend, ban etc.. The coalition abolished it, saying elections are the way to hold councillors to account. Councils can have their own standards committees, but they don't have the same powers.

Is the recommendation to apologise the most they could do....as he is an Independent.

Report
CheddarGorgeous · 27/02/2013 17:29

It's in the news now because the official complaints process has ended.

They recommended that he apologise Hmm

18 months and he's still got his job?? Fucking hell :(

Surely this could be considered a hate crime ?

Who would you suggest deals with it? There is currently no way to get rid of a councillor who won't resign.

The crappy thing is that this incident took place 18 months ago and the man is still in post.....yes that's right....this is not current news....it's just made the recent headlines that it should have done 18 months ago. He should have been kicked out there and then......and yet he is still in post and nobody appears to have dealt with it.

ArcticRoll · 27/02/2013 17:07

I am shocked that he has been allowed to remain as councillor.

Report
CheddarGorgeous · 27/02/2013 17:05

Or if you want to let him know directly how you feel his email is [email protected].

I am gobsmacked (a) that Councillor Collin Brewer said what he said and (b) that he or anyone else sees fit that he remains in his position. How badly does someone have to behave before they are deemed unfit to hold a public office?

This story has made me more angry than any for a long, long time.

Come on, surely this man has to go? Just unbelievable that he is still in post.

Thank God the hospital caring for my daughter when she was admitted at the weekend think differently to him, and cared for my (disabled) daughter with care, compassion, good humour and professionalism. The nurses were lovely, even taking the time to play card games with her.

well it seems to have picked up a lot more attention now, hopefully enough pressure will be put on him to leave.

Gotta love the "I'm sorry you are offended" line as well. What a twat.

He's an independent, no-one has any power over him except the electorate, and they have to wait until the next election. Usually councillors who do this sort of thing are forced out by their party. The standards board, which could have done something, has been abolished. Cheers Mr pickles.

Colin Brewer is a bit of a hot topic on twitter at the moment so let's hope the story blows up and he gets the boot.
