Hello there, my dd is a first year studying English at Oxford. She has her eye on completing the GDL after finishing her current degree, with view to becoming a lawyer of some sorts.

It is my understanding that if you're an out of this world applicant then big city law firms would be willing to pay for it. What are the chances of this?

How does it work if one wants to become a barrister?

Oh FFS mini pupillages not pillages - he is not swathing his way like a Viking through villages. That ( even I ) have picked up would not be helpful on the CV when applying for a bar course Grin

I don't know Basilisk. I think mastering the art of a mini pillage as opposed to a full blown grab n go could speak volumes about a person's judgment/ discretion etc and be a very pertinent transferable skill in the court context.

Basil: has he applied for a BPTC scholarship from an Inn? I know 2019 applications have closed for DDs Inn. These can be worth ££££ and really help say you are worthy of pupillage because the Inn rates you. Ditto a scholarship from the BPTC provider. The Inns also have residential scholarships. It is such a heavy schedule of study, applications and interviews!

I didn’t know any of this until DD did it. I was of no help at all. Other than checking for punctuation and spelling on one application! I worried all the way through. I knew I couldn’t help and didn’t relish picking up the pieces if she got nowhere. Pupillage can be hugely stressful too and even the brightest of the bright found that. DDs friend with a starred first from Cambridge had a torrid time! You just want your DC to get through it and emerge with tenancy and be happy in their chosen field!
