It really depends on the course.

I did my course at two universities (personal reasons for moving that had nothing to do with the uni) and loved both. Manchester Met. and the University of Gloucestershire. The course was near identical.

I looked around Oxford Brookes and hated it but that’s just me.

I would not want my DD or DS going to Oxford Brookes after reading this:-

Just like with the other universities, it all depends on the course as different universities, regardless of whether they were ex polys or not, are better at different subjects.

Ah, I think I'd forgotten that about Loughborough somewhere along the way.

I chatted to a sports science lecturer at UCLAN recently who was really nice and very impressive. He seemed to really care about his students. No idea about the quality of the course there though.

Kingston is world class for fashion design and strong on the creative arts generally. Don't know about other subjects.

I think Loughborough was always a uni?

Don't think Loughborough was ever a poly! I think she actively wants a more coursework vocational course so ex polys better than unis in that respect

Loughborough wasn’t a poly.

I think Liverpool John Moores is highly rated for sports science.

Very, very much depends on the subject.

Ex polys best for some vocational subjects - better than Russel group - not so much for Arts. Check the stats.

Hull was not a poly!

No-one mentioning LBU (my employer?) - don't know whether to worry or not! Ditto York SJ (my husband's employer) or Canterbury Christchurch? Depends totally on the course. LBU's flagship school is Sports so might be worth looking at.

I think Loughborough is strong in sports science. Can't remember what poly it used to be though.

Would add Sheffield Hallam to the list.

Overall though, it does depend on the subject.

Interesting thanks. She's looking for Sport science.

Hull wasn't a polytechnic nor was UEA (Norwich).

I think with ex polys it very much depends on the course. Many specialised in technical qualifications so for example Manchester poly was good for business type degrees with well regarded industrial placements while Derby poly is world famous for aeronautical engineering and has had a long collaboration with Rolls Royce. Leeds poly was very good for healthcare type degrees

Winchester was never a ploy it was King Alfred's teacher training college

IIRC Cardiff Met wasn’t a Poly but was a number of Institutes of Higher education and Teacher training colleges. The Polytechnic Of Wales became University of South Wales.
