Quorn makes my family ill

Worst parent award goes to me after a couple months of my daughter getting sick on and off ,vomiting diarrhoea and now a rash I’ve discovered the cause is quorn! And only because my partner had some and the same happened to him ,The company say it’s something like 1 in 200000 people will get a reaction to it but that’s two just in my household ,Anyone else intolerant to quorn ? it’s an interesting one

I used to stay with a family member occasionally. They are vegetarian and would often serve us Quorn as part of a meal. Everytime I went to stay with them I would come down with the same symptoms. Excessive wind, stomach cramps and diarrhoea. I never had these symptoms any other time. After the 3rd or 4th visit it suddenly clicked. That Quorn was the only thing I was eating with them that I didn't eat at home. Stopped eating it immediately and have never (in over 5 years) had the same problems again. I would never knowingly eat a Quorn product again

Family of veggies here, me, she and ds1 cannot eat it. We're doubled up with stomach pains an hour or so after eating it. The rest of the family are fine with it.

We used to eat a lit of quorn mince in spaghetti sauces as nobody could tell the difference, but about 2 years ago we started to get stomach aches after eating it .dont know if they changed something in the manufacture or the type of fungus but we haven’t eaten it since .

I like Quorn and eat it regularly, but it does cause wind (gale force).

I know two vegetarians who absolutely can't eat it - one thought she was dying and went to A&E. Then while she was waiting she used the bathroom, which resolved the problem, so she slunk home, never to eat Quorn again.

Blimey! Never heard of this and i’ve been eating it for years. I love it in a spag bol. I do get severe allergies to all nuts, rules out veganism for me.

It gives me a belly ache and diarrhoea.

I use red lentils instead of quorn. Much better!

I can’t handle it. Bloats cramps and then serious farts.

Not cool.

We’re all fine with quorn. But it’s not the best veggie alternative as quite processed.

It sets off my friends asthma really badly

Another one here that gets stomach ache and...ahem....mild bowel issues if I eat it, same with DH. In fact based on anecdotal conversation I think pretty much everyone I know says similar. I have a friend who ends up with her head in the toilet if she consumes it. It's gross anyway, and has a horrible aftertaste to it, I think, plus ultimately is processed food anyway.

DH tolerates the mild gastric issues Hmm because he likes it to bulk out a meal (he's a lifelong vegetarian) but I'd rather skip it. I don't find it absorbs flavour that well in things like curries, unless you want to let it marinate for days all you seem to get is a great curry with the taste of quorn. Hardly a worthwhile addition in my books Confused. The mince is ok, but that seems even worse on our stomachs.

Totally agree that getting better at creating flavour in vegetarian food just makes you not need or want it.

I don’t eat it that often anymore but I always get bad hiccups if I eat the deli style stuff (cocktail sausages, scotch eggs etc) Fine with the cooked products!

Gives dd an itchy throat and breathing problems
Unfortunately she is a veggie and 3 out of the 5 days at school Quorn is on the menu

No we're good with it, but soya can be very hard on the gut and lots are intolerant to large amounts of it.
You're not a bad parent for not automatically knowing that your family can't eat what a lot of others can

Our family are all fine with Quorn & most of my side of extended family are vegetarian & they're all fine too.

Maybe try soya, wheat or tofu if you're looking for meat free protein? As well as lentils, beans etc

There’s so many kids that will only eat chicken nuggets who’s parents have started using quorn nuggets as they’re “healthier” there’s about to be a whole lot of school absences haha

I think they down play it tbh. They say 1 in 200 will be intolerant, that’s 0.5% of the population but bear in mind that that’s the general population and not vegetarians so mostwon’t eat it and will never realise they are intolerant. Google just said that 10% of people are vegetarian in Europe so that’s only, what? 0.005% of people who will be intolerant and actually present with symptoms because they are the people eating it? We’ve found more than that on this thread 😂
