Would you recommend your slow cooker?

My slow cooker has broken beyond repair. I need to buy another one - would be really grateful if anyone could recommend their model? Or ones to avoid? Have searched the threads but they are a bit out of date.

TIA

My broken one (in case you are interested, I know there are some slow cooker obsessives around) was a Wahl James Martin one, quite cheapy I would have thought (it was a present), it has lasted about 3 years and we used it about twice a week.

Thanks for all the recommendations. I got the one recommended by deemented and becknotts , thank you very much.

osd I am between ovens Sad but when I can get a new one I will look out for one that cooks really low with a timer, because I agree, slow cookers do take up valuable work space.

Chickens come in different sizes though so I suppose if you are a big chicken family you need the big slow cooker and vice versa.

I get a whole chicken in mine?

another fan of the Tesco £10 one, I have also had it a couple of years and love it!

I have the Tesco 3.5L one too. Bought it for £10 and have had it for 2 years. I wanted to experiment and see if I used it alot and it turns out I do.

However, the next one I buy will be the larger size as I'd like to cook enough for 2 meals or do a chicken/ham joint in it which the 3.5L isn't big enough for.

I use a 6.1 litre slow cooker for a whole chicken.

I think you would struggle to get a whole chicken in a 3.5 lt one.

I have a 6.5 lt one and do lots of batch cooking, it is not a know make (my dad won it in a raffle and gave it to me).

A timer would be useful on a slow cooker, I have mine plugged into a timer plug which also works. slow cooking brisket tonight (comes on at 2 am) for lunch tomorrow.

Good luck with the new slow cooker - do let us know which one you choose and how you find it.

I've wondered about getting one, but always cook in the same way that osd describes. I did buy one of those plug in steamers, but ended up hardly ever using it.

I love my oven, i put food on low on the timer and after however many hours it turns off and is safe and doesn't overuse electric. I also use it that way overnight, your oven may be perfect saving work space and cost on new appliances.

What ItsNotRocketSurgery said. I wouldn't go out and leave an oven on all day, but I feel safe leaving my evening meal cooking in my slow cooker. Saves the effort of cooking my main meal after a tiring day.

OP- I have the Lakeland 3.5L one for about 30pounds and I like it.

Can you get a chicken (whole) in a 3.5 l one? Or should I get a bigger one?

Anyone got a 4-in-1 cooker? One of those ones that does frying/slow cooking/steaming/rice? Are they any good?

Arrgghh. Stupid autocorrect.

Meant to say the cusinart one not ciao art!

Report
zipzap · 17/06/2011 19:28

Yes. Got a ciao art one that is great for casseroles etc but also for roast chicken or roast lamb...

However if you want one that is just to do a couple of portions it would probably a bit big.

osd Slow cookers you plug in and leave on all day - they don't use much electricity and you can safely go out for hours knowing the house isn't going ot burn down.

I don't think slow cookers have that much to differentiate them really. It's a pot, in a thing that heats it up. With a plug on it.

I have that £10 tesco one and it's great. Had it two years, never failed me yet. Might not be big enough for some people though.

Thanks everyone, very useful info. That is rubbish about Crock-Pot®. I'll cross them off my list.

I have been happily using a 6.5l Cookstore one from Argos , works brilliantly was on sale for 15pounds. I use it constantly.

I had the much more expensive Crock-Pot® - Original Slow Cooker, bowl cracked after only two months and customer service were hopeless would not replace insisting I buy a new part which was more than the cost of buying a cheaper slow cooker
