Fasting / 5:2 diet

5:2 Diet Thread! Number 15! Our quinceañera!

GreenEggsAndNichts · 11/03/2013 15:33

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

gah! my stomach is rumbling like mad which is really unusual for me and i'm actually feeling physical hunger (also unusual - normally it's only munchiness if anything). my body seems to be responding differently this week.

i have clean bedding and a tidy, hoovered, no clothes lying around bedroom. been a while Wink

guess i'll move onto downstairs. ds is on a playdate and it will be nice to open the front door when he's dropped off to a hallway that isn't a sea of pawprints i guess.

my stomach is seriously noisy! don't know why it's so 'different'

I've been lurking for a while around this thread absorbing information and some support while trying to shift some weight since the 1st week in January.
I'm trying a combination of everything under the sun - a multi-faceted approach.
I'm restricting carbs and having low fat and low alcohol, having a 20 - 30 min brisk walk daily and doing the 5 n 2 for good measure.
I was weighed today for the first time since December and I'm delighted to say I've lost 10kgs (22 pounds) and am thrilled.
I feel so much better and for the first time ever in my life, I've bought a SMALLER bra!!!
I can get into clothes that I haven't worn for years (but was too fond of to throw away) and I can button them up.
Thanks to all who have posted encouraging words - it does help to keep me focussed, and a huge thanks to the person who posted the low fat summer curry recipe in the recipe section. It's been my staple diet on fast days for 2 months.

Hi I just wanted to mark my place as I posted on the previous thread. As I hadn't lost weight I had given up after 5 weeks. Now I wish I had found this thread and read the hints and tips first. I think I need an attitude change to see this as making me healthier rather than 'thinner' after all if i don't lose any weight then perhaps I don't need to! Starting again on Thursday and going to throw the scales in the bin (they were dodgy cheap and wrong anyway)
I also wanted to mention to brutus that I had read a few articles that indicated a 24 hr fast including consuming 500 cals within that 24 hrs period counted as 5:2 but it's not what most people are doing. If its working for you right now then thats great though eh? Perhaps you could build up to longer periods. I wil see if i can track down the article i read.

I think I may have found the solution to my post-school/work eating issue (only snack danger zone left for me) - only took half my lunch to work and put the rest in the fridge! Given that this WOE has stopped my need/desire for a breakfast first thing and usually end up eating it at 10am, I'm only eating lunch 2 hours later (dictated by work schedule!) so need less of it at the time iyswim (and I will eat everything I've got no matter what). So then it's not a snack, it is part of my lunch :)

Slept really well after my fast day yesterday, normally wake an hour or 2 early post-fast so good to know it doesn't always happen!

Still no proper exercise but am feeling a lot better finally, so maybe tomorrow!

virginposter that is brilliant and what I am hoping for! It is so easy to let the weight creep back on when you don't have the weekly weigh in shame.

Feeling pretty hungry at the moment, although I agree that it ebbs and flows. I'm already thinking about what I want to eat tomorrow but I just know that when it comes around, I probably won't feel like it anymore!

saltyandsweet here's the recipe.

(I will pop over and post this in the recipe thread too, if someone could be so kind as to link to it?)

Ingredients

2 chicken breasts - poached and shredded
1 green and 1 yellow pepper - chopped
1 onion - chopped
1 clove garlic - crushed
1 chilli - finely chopped
1 400g tin chopped tomatoes
1 400g carton passata
500ml water or veg/chicken stock
1 tin kidney beans
1 tin borlotti beans (or any others you fancy)
1-2 tsps chilli powder (dependent on how spicy you like it)
1 tsp ground cumin
1 tsp cayenne papper
1 tsp smoked paprika
1 tsp dried parsley

Method

Fry off the onion, peppers, garlic and chilli until soft (10-15 mins - I use spray oil, but olive oil is fine). Add the tomatoes, passata, stock/water, beans and spices. Stir well and simmer for 25 mins.

Add the chicken and parsley, stir well and simmer for a further 5 minutes.

Done.

Every time I have had this at work, people have commented on it (smells like chilli con carne/fajitas).

Was doing well until I started looking at the bbc good food page in an attempt to plan some meals for the week. Now I'm starving!!! No time to eat anyway though, just finishing a mug of peppermint tea then off to pick up dd1 from school.

No problem! I hope you enjoy it. According to MFP, a portion of 1/6 of the recipe is 160cals and 1/4 of it is 240.

Hi, hope everyone's having a good day... Could anyone please answer a q for me? I usually fast on Mon and Wed but have visitors arriving tomorrow afternoon and will want to eat dinner with them. I don't have another opportunity to fast this week, so thinking about fasting all day until dinner time (about 7.30) and then having a smaller amount of what everyone's having. This will take my cals intake for the day to something like 8-900 I guess though, so not sure whether it won't have the same effect, or in some way could have a detrimental effect?

Anyone able to advise??

TIA

Report
swallowedAfly · 12/03/2013 17:46

no detrimental effect and definitely better than just missing it totally imo whoah. sounds a good plan. could add to that by doing a 'mini fast' like that again another day.

am still tidying, cleaning, fidgeting here. luckily there is plenty to do in this pit house.

Nearly tea time and nothing has passed my lips. Tomorrow is DPs birthday and he's requested cheesecake and takeaway, I will be on an eating day and there will be wine, but I've obv still got a limit, what does everyone do on special occasions, still try and stick to the 2000 cals or go a bit crazy and eat less the next day? Or even add in an extra fast day. I'm only on week two.

Hi new to posting on the 5:2 diet. I've been on the diet for about the last 7 weeks. Went well for about the first 3 weeks, when I lost 6lbs, but since then I've plateaued and haven't lost anything for about a month. On fast days I get very cold, it feels as though my body is 'shutting down' and dropping my metabolic rate. I have avoided exercising on fast days, but was wondering if you have found that if you exercise on fast days it accelerates the weight loss, as I wonder if it keeps the metabolic rate up.

has anyone ever had alcohol on a fast day?

i haven't eaten anything yet and am planning on leaving it a while yet. was wondering if i could have a glass of wine after my tea so long as i stay under 500. only problem i can foresee is if it makes me want more or makes me munchy.

Report
Itsaboatjack · 12/03/2013 18:44

lemon plateaus and feeling cold are very common here. Have you taken any measurements that you can check, many people find they are still losing inches, even if not weight. I exercise on fast days, nothing too long or strenuous, I walk 4 miles a day doing school runs, then I might do a short run or a HIIT workout. Even on feed days I try to exercise before I eat as ive read that exercising in a fasting state increases fat burning.

saf, if you stay within cals I don't see why not. I would struggle though as alcohol can sometimes give me the munchies and also reduces my willpower.

Sorry if I am being really stupid here but I'm going to ask anyway!
When working out calories in wholewheat pasta and it says on mfp 148 cals per 100g.......do I weigh 100g of dried pasta and then it is 148 cals once cooked? or do I wait until pasta is cooked and then weigh 100g? Sorry if this is a silly question! Blush

lemon I don't lose weight on this WOE unless I exercise too. I actually love exercising on a fast day - feels doubly energising. Lots of people feel cold on fast days - I believe long socks and an extra jumper are advocated! It has been bitter these last few days though fasting or not.

Saf I had a small whisky on a fast day last week - that was fine as whisky doesn't make me want to have nibbles - personally I'd struggle with wine as it makes me very munchy.

Storm Just eat and enjoy tomorrow but be more moderate for the rest of the week - it's helpful to look at your calorie intake over a week rather than individual days iyswim - so it would be your tdee x 5 plus 500cals x 2 (if you're doing 5:2). Probably best to eat slowly and remember to stop as soon as you feel full. I have to be a bit careful on the day after a fast as I get uncomfortably full and bloated very quickly, especially with carbs, doubly so with high sugar & salt content foods.

Report
swallowedAfly · 12/03/2013 19:04

i poured a half glass of wine - possibly not the healthiest way to break a fast mind you.

just thought i'd share what might be totally random coincidence but maybe not. i felt really tired and flat over the weekend to the point where i got a bit worried i was getting depressed (been there before so a tad paranoid when i feel my mood and energy dip like that). it was the first time i'd felt like that in a while and it was also the first time i'd eaten crap and overeaten during a week for a while. i'm actually wondering if there is a connection there.

fasting genuinely seems to give me more energy and make me more emotionally resilient. a week where i was a bit crap and overate and didn't have decent fasts saw me feeling tired and bleurgh.

i did also have my period over the weekend so obviously other factors at play but i do think it might be down to the overeating.

will definitely be 'watching' myself and seeing if it is a pattern or not.

curious to know if anyone else who appreciates fatigue and mood effects (can't be the only person here who has had problems with depression and energy levels i'm thinking) has noticed any changes with fasting.
