GNR in 4 weeks. I can do 5k Help!!

Redtartanshoes · 09/08/2018 19:14

That’s it basically.

I signed up. I’ve done nothing. I could do 5k in under 30 mins before Xmas but have done little running since then.. although a couple of pump type classes a week.

I really want to do it. Am I mad? Any advice?

Oh, I was talking about this thread over tea tonight and wondering how it went - well done, OP! It's a great race.

Redtartan, I could have written this post! Last year I began running regularly & had got up to running 8 miles. Then I injured my knee in January 2018, took time out of running, sports massage etc. Started back running in June, got a charity place for the Cardiff half (5weeks away) & my knee has started being painful again 🙁 I don’t know whether to pull out of the race , but I have already collected sponsorship money through justgiving. Don’t know if I should concentrate on cycling to keep up my fitness for the next few weeks & maybe just run once a week and Jeff on the day? Any advice? Sorry don’t mean to hijack your thread! Fantastic effort by the way, you’ll be fine for the GNR 😀

Not trying to steal the thread but I do sympathise! I signed up for the Royal Parks half for charity. I have done the Shine night marathon twice but no running races. I have been seriously training since July but still struggle to run enough. I can run the first six miles but then need to run/walk the rest.
I get stressed and have had tears. I don't know how many times I have said I can't do it but I still have a month to go and I am getting fitter all the time. I am doing this for me and I have lost half a stone so far! The crazy thing is that I will still be stressing the next time I train.
I think this will be my first and last half marathon!

Have got a massage booked for Monday, might do 5k on tthursday but that’s it. Not more.

There’s the great Scottish run at the end of the month...Wink

Great update - if you can run 13k now I think you'll be fine. Its the most fun hm I've done - crowd support is amazing. Remember to totally taper off for your last week- you'll actually do better if you have vaguely rested legs

Sorry posted too soon-it’s not a pb course due to the amount of people dodging you have to do but you’ll be fine if you walk/run a bit

You’ll be fine. I wouldn’t say the topography was brutal at all! There’s a bit of a drag of a hill towards the end but the rest is flat.
I think it’s the best road race I’ve done. Loved the red arrows and the crowds.

No dedication. Just stubbornness!!

Tbf Ive only got ds who is 11 and a flexible job so I’ve been able to run when I like.

Update if anyone is interested. (Can’t talk to anyone inRL as it’s a secret)

I’m just back from my last long run. 13k. 1h40. I’m certainly not gonna win any medals but considering 4 weeks ago I was struggling with 5k I feel bloody amazing. There’s been a couple of rubbish runs and lots of tears but I actually think I can do this. Maybes.

Thanks again for all advice.

Well done on the two runs, even if you can keep up running every other day until the event it will make a huge difference Smile A PP mentioned doing your longest run around 10 days before GNR so end of this month, that’s sound advice so do try to follow it. You can still do some shorter runs between the long one and the event. Also make sure you stretch after every run, it makes a difference to how your legs will feel the next day. Keep it up!

Got out Friday and did 5k, and the same today with a hangover. I’m gonna run and train as much as I can over the next 4 weeks, and see how I feel. My original goal had been sub 2 hours. Oh how we laughed

My training plan has gone horribly wrong too. I’m stuck at about 10k. My plan is to increase the time I’m running for my long run each week. So an hour today, 70 mins next weekend, 80 mins the following weekend, 90 mins after that, then as a pp said, try to run the first 8-9 miles ‘properly’ and run/walk the rest. I’m focusing on the atmosphere / event rather than the race.

Could you walk 20k?

Did you get out for your run on Friday and today OP? Don’t worry about the toenail, I’m a runner and my big toenail comes off fairly regularly. Grows back out, then falls off again. It’s never stopped me running and if anything feels better once it’s off Smile
