What will happen to the Irish border if there is no deal?

Apologies if this has been dealt with on another thread I have just finished reading the one on the backstop.
If all efforts fail and the UK leave the EU with no deal what will happen at the border? Will TM and the British government be able to impose what they like regardless of backstops or the GFA?

It can't be right that the Republic of Ireland is inconvenienced by cost if a hard border is required.

I just raised that question on the backstop thread. I can't see how not having an Irish Sea border is feasible, whatever the ERG has twisted May's arm to agree to. If the backstop comes into force, it will still be needed for RoI/GB traffic.

It's odd that there are preparations in place for Dover but I don't see anything about the land border or anything about UK-Ireland shipping routes.

Well for clarity I'm from the north of Ireland, maybe if i was from elsewhere in the UK i may have called it something different. Anyway being from here I'm well used to there being many names for one thing! I'm sure everyone reading this knows exactly where I'm talking about and if that's what AWIAAF wants to call it thats fine with me.

Why is it the UK border and not the Irish border, surely it’s either and both? The UK border if you’re in Ireland, the Irish border if you’re in the UK and the UK\Irish border if you’re in another country altogether.
