THE BREXIT FALLOUT CONTINUES - THREAD TWELVE

The calm of the eye of the storm is upon us. The signs are there that more trouble is ahead. What now for Brexit, the blank cheque for our future?

May’s honeymoon can only last the Summer, until she has to do some proper graft. Her Cabinet have all gone on holiday and to swat up on their new specialised subject, and by god have they got some homework to do.

Well, all of them apart from Liam Fox, who has bugger all to do for some time.

Johnson needs to… well we all know what Boris needs to do. Bend over and take it like a good boy.

Davies needs to learn the entire structure and workings of the EU and its variations of trade agreements and relationships with other nations. Juncker has the FUKD in his little black book of people who have crossed him (yes, he actually has one of these) and has put Brit Hating Barnier in charge of the EU Brexit team. Davies must somehow hold his own against this experienced EU hardnut. In French. Oh and find a permanent office.

What do the others need to learn? Hammond - how to perform a bloody miracle. Patel - it is illegal to use foreign aid as a leverage for trade deals. Leadsom – er everything? Rudd – how to do bigger assault on liberty and human rights than her mentor. Fallon – how we will afford to defend ourselves with pitch forks, especially if we can’t use Trident for some reason and it becomes necessary. Our enemy; Russia? North Korea? Turkey? Isis? Na. Trump if he wins.

Brexit is now officially in the hands Whitehall’s unbelievers. Those overstretched officials who are already saying there is a gap in their capacity to deliver what Parliament wants without additional the burden of Brexit. These discredited experts are left wondering if their challenge is, in reality, Mission Impossible, and this is made worse by the pressure that just about every senior Brexiteer seems to say is ‘easy’ despite all the mounting evidence to the contrary. Which is cold comfort to everyone who voted – Remain or Leave alike.

We still don’t even know what Brexit is. It is still something which has no coherent ideology and no clear set of prescriptions for what ailes us as a society. It is a bundle of contradictions, united chiefly by what, and who, it opposes. Whatever the problem, Brexit can fix it. Whatever the threat, internal or external, Brexit can vanquish it, and it is unnecessary for Brexiteers to explain how.

May’s plan? Some say that she is the Dear Leader, some say she is an evil genius with Larry the Cat on her lap waiting for the Brexiteer Boys to fuck it up so we can Remain, some say she is blessed by the Ghost of Thatcher but we know her as The PM. –Sorry I’ve been itching to make the May/Hammond Top Gear gag for several weeks— The truth is, we just don't know yet.

Plus anything Brexit related about the Labour and UKIP leadership and the rest of the world thrown in to boot.

This is the quest for the answers that everyone wants and trying to keep an eye on those politicians and accountability (both here and abroad in the era of post-fact politics in the trail of Brexit). There maybe no single ‘truth’ but there sure as hell is a lot of bullshit to wade through. Get your wellies out, and plough on through with us.

No experience necessary. Sense of humour required.

I read the replies to Farage on Facebook and ended up thoroughly depressed that people think like that. I really do despair.

He's waiting to be approved by the MEPs and 'other officials' apparently. He has the security brief, which sounds important but may not amount to very much.

I thought that Lord Hill had already been replaced with the ex Ambassador to France, who had been given some minor portfolio.

I think probably all sides agree that Juncker is, shall we put it politely, an unpleasant piece of work?

If we are still members expected to abide by EU rules until we leave, then we are still members who should have a voice until we leave - this I absolutely agree with. Also, what exactly is he going to do about it? He's already excluding us with the 'informal meetings', does he have the ability to do anything else?

Jean-Claude Juncker, the head of the European Commission, has told Theresa May that she should not be holding free trade discussions with other nations while Britain is still a member of the EU.

There is a certain amount of hypocrisy here, because despite being members of the EU still, we have been excluded from informal talks, and our researchers are already being excluded from funding agreements.

I can't really see why May can't put out feelers to other countries - talks about talks, if you like, because they can only be very rough plans which could easily come to naught.

From the DT G20 liveblog:

Jean-Claude Juncker, the head of the European Commission, has told Theresa May that she should not be holding free trade discussions with other nations while Britain is still a member of the EU.
Mrs May held informal discussions about future free trade deals after Brexit with the US, Australia and India at the G20 summit.
Mr Juncker said: "I don't like the idea that member states of the EU, including those who are still a member state of the European Union, are negotiating free trade agreements," he said on Sunday.

Theresa May has told India's Prime Minster that he is failing to do enough to take back immigrants who have overstayed in the UK.
Mrs May met with Narendra Modi, the Indian Prime Minister, at the G20 summit.

Oh, and of course 'The Moustache' has piped up again - I note lots of lovely replies to the Ukip tweet proclaiming that only The Moustache can force TM to deliver the Brexit 'they' want, and he must immediately return and save them from the nasty people who won't invoke A50 yesterday.

Lost a line^^ Ruth Davidson said that when Boris was peddling his 'Australian style points system will be implemented and completely resolve all immigration problems'

Report
Bearbehind · 05/09/2016 07:57

I'm sure Ruth Davidson used that exact phrase ie an Australian style points system is not a silver bullet, in one of the pre-referendum tv debates.

It's truly shocking quite how much u-turning has happened since.

The headline on the BBC news website currently "Immigration: Points-based system not 'silver bullet' - May"
www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-37271420

Some paragraphs from the story.
"The now not so new prime minister has always promised to respect the referendum result, again and again vowing that Brexit means Brexit.

However, that might not entail the introduction of a points-based system to control immigration - the central proposal made by the victorious Vote Leave campaign during the referendum.

The prime minister vowed the government will deliver controls on the numbers of people coming to the UK from around the EU.

But Theresa May said one of the issues is whether or not points-based systems do work, suggesting that despite Vote Leave's repeated promises, it might not be the answer.

This puts the prime minister not just at odds with several of her cabinet ministers who argued for such a system during the campaign but potentially with some of the many millions of voters, in part persuaded to vote to leave because of that commitment."

What I would like to say about KV would get MN into trouble with their libel lawyers... Suffice to say that he is not a pleasant or honest person, and it's about time he got his comeuppance. (The link is to the Sunday Mirror story about him being caught on camera talking about drug taking and having unprotected sex with Eastern European male prostitutes... As the chair of the Parliamentary committee that looks at policy areas including drugs and prostitution, that's more than problematic...)
