Furlough for 15 year old

Any advice? My 15 year old works for a gymnastics club as an assistant coach and has done for nearly 2 years. Initially all staff were put on furlough as obviously they can run sessions.
However now (3 days post pay day) they have said if you don't have an NI number you won't be receiving any money.

I can't find it written anywhere that she would have to have an NI number to be entitled to this. She would be eligible to pay tax if she went over her tax free threshold and is on the PAYE system.
Does anyone know if this is right?

Her boss is a slippery character who has booked her (and others) for hours previously then when an adult coach is ill and shes had to get another coach in has told them she cant pay them but it would be a great opportunity for them and they need to tell her how many hours they can do for free!!
Thanks in advance.

I can't find it now but I'm sure there is a minimum age limit for the furlough scheme, is a PP knows someone who is 16 getting it that must be the limit, I'm sure it won't be lower then that.

OP ignore those saying you “shouldn’t” claim. I don’t know that rules but anyone 16 or over can be living as an independent person, or may have costs that their parents are not able to pay for (the reasons for them getting a job in the first place perhaps). So of course anyone age 16 or over can and should benefit from the furlough scheme.

I can't believe that teenagers with Saturday jobs and no responsibilities and their employers are taking advantage of this scheme. It should be helping to keep people afloat not giving kids extra pocket money. We'll be paying for it in higher taxes for years as it is.

My 15 yo has been furloughed. He is on the payroll. You don’t need an NI no to be on payroll (I know for sure because I do payroll, although not this particular one, and I haven’t done any furlough claims). They did ask if he had one yet for the furlough claim but I don’t know if you have to have one. Will see if I can find out. He hasn’t received anything yet but will do (I know this because I work there too) but this might just be because they are generous employers.

According to what I have read, employers with fewer than 100 employees on the furlough scheme have to ring the helpline to have the claim processed over the phone if any of their employees don’t have a NIN. There is a different process for larger employers but it’s still possible to include employees without NINs.

You need to enter an NI number on the furlough claim through the HMRC site.

Howells they're issuing temp NI numbers up in the NI office.

I've used CV191919D a few times Grin a human being has to enter it via the tier 3 helpline though. The usual gateway wont accept it.

My daughter and her friend are getting furlough pay from their part time jobs. Ridiculous that employers are claiming for these; and ridiculous that the govt permitted it. But you can’t blame the teenagers; they didn’t ask for it.

She won't be on it! It's the first thing that comes up on Google.

If you have staff under 16 and they earn below the tax threshold, you don't need to put them on your PAYE system or payroll. An employer isn't going to pay the extra fee's to put children on their PAYE system when they've been told not to.

I work in accounts. As soon as someone submits a member of staff under 16 and their earnings are low, they just don't go on. If she was on it she would have a tax code and be able to get furlough. They wouldn't pay everyone else furlough and not her, what would be the point? They get the money for free. The simple issue is, she is not on the PAYE system. She's under 16, doesn't have to pay NI and doesn't earn enough to pay tax so it would be a waste of time adding her on and being the fee's

If they're volunteering to do zoom sessions unpaid, they shouldn't be eligible for furlough at all, employer needs to pay them.
