What do you think the post-virus world will be like?

I think the divide between rich and poor will widen considerably, and the repercussions will be major civil unrest unless serious measures are taken to mitigate it (universal basic income brought in, minimum wage increased to appropriate living wage, decent social housing for key workers etc).

The inevitable global recession will see a generation of completely disillusioned youth with large university debts and poor employment prospects. Their anger will fuel necessary change.

Mental health care will require major investment to prevent endemic depression and suicide.

This will be an unpopular view, but I also hope multiple airlines go bust and air travel becomes largely unaffordable/unnecessary as people who previously would fly to Europe for the day for meetings hold them online instead. I hope momentum from the Greta Thunberg movement combined with the visible improvements lockdowns have made to the planet puts massive pressure on governments to make real and quantifiable changes to protect and heal the earth from the damage the human race has done.

Bit of a recession, then much the same as before.. hopefully with at least a better funded and supplied nhs. Though probably not. Humans being so adept at adapting..

Frompcat · 11/04/2020 21:45

Essentially it'll go back to the same as it was before.

That isn't a popular opinion on here, but that's what I think.

sanityisamyth · 11/04/2020 22:20

@ProfessorPootle 100% agree with everything you've said.

The planet can't sustain the amount of abuse we through at it. This proves that people can work from home if necessary so no reason why not now.

Hopefully much more local holidays (within the same country at least) rather than flying half way around the world just to fly back a week later.

Continuation of the community spirit and shopping locally would be good.

RedToothBrush · 11/04/2020 22:24

Tbh if you can work from home then for a lot of folk you have a non-job. The froth on a post-industrial society may get blown away.

Yes I'm sure you'd feel like this when all your online shops crashed, your internet banking went offline (includes payment systems in shops), your NHS computer system with patient details went down or any personal or financial account of yours was hacked.

Lots of 'none jobs' working from home there.

Some pretty crucial to assist key workers in carrying out their roles on the front line.

vera “ Maybe the sun is setting on human civilsation . We have had a good run.”

That’s what I think.

LilacTree1 · 11/04/2020 22:30

I don’t think whether or not you work at home has much to do with bullshit jobs.

Frompcat · 11/04/2020 22:35

I do think we may well see a generation of children with OCD caused by this.

StealthPolarBear · 11/04/2020 22:38

Well all line the streets and clap at 8pm on Thursdays and no one will really remember why

colouringinpro · 11/04/2020 22:49

I think it will be pretty shit tbh. Many, many businesses will have gone under. We will have previously unheard of levels of national debt. State and Police power will remain heightened and due to Covid Tracking and Tacking efforts we'll all be monitored. Vulnerable children and women will have suffered significantly during lockdown and mental health difficulties and anti social behaviour will have risen.

Sadly I don't think there'll be some massive rebirth. Those that can will get back on the treadmill.

justanotherneighinparadise · 11/04/2020 22:50

Air pollution will be much improved.

RedToothBrush · 11/04/2020 22:53

Wasn't that this Thursday just gone? When people were setting off fireworks, clapping for the Prime Minister or organising a clap for children who don't understand why they have been told they can't go out whilst people filmed themselves clapping, just after their post about how nice it was for their kids to play in the paddling pool with their neighbours kids today.

babasaclover · 11/04/2020 23:11

Mass office blocks in the city will not be built anymore, it will be so much more widely accepted to work at home

Bitterglitter · 11/04/2020 23:27
