Today I am braising a lettuce. An out of date romaine lettuce.

Make me feel better about this!

Save potato peel and bake until crispy in the oven, approximately 200 deg, 15 mins, with a bit of olive oil, salt and spice of choice. Makes excellent crisps.

Baked a cake with eggs that were 6 months out of date. (please don't ask why they were even in the fridge, I've used dozens of eggs since I bought these but they were just hiding at the back) The baking powder was expired too.

PS the whole family are unharmed.

Frozen grapes make great ice cubes for wine 😂

I've made banana bread which is just cooling now. And I always turn stale bread into croutons by cutting it up and baking it.

I also made oat milk (which was surprisingly easy) and ate the strained oats as porridge.

We are finally using up all the odds and ends in the freezer. Some strange combinations but have mostly been fine. I thing DD is getting a bit fed up with ‘freezer surprise’ dinners though.
I’m trying to make some space in there to freeze useful things such as an extra loaf of bread. My freezer was full of boxes with 1 or 2 things left in them so it’s been really good to get them all eaten and I can actually see the bottom of some of the freezer drawers again.

Just stewed some apples that were quite bruised with sultanas and a little bit of of orange juice. Will freeze half and the rest with yoghurt or on bran flakes for breakfast

I am drinking a flower based herbal tea supposed to reduce menopause symptoms. Out of date last July.

I've never wasted any food. Even peelings get composted. I freeze anything that is going out of date. I eat out of date food. It would take me a year to fill my wheelie bin. I'm not doing anything different now.

Yesterday I made a great spaghetti dish I saw on Pinterest which uses the whole broccoli, not just the leafy bits.

I have a dehydrator so all fruit and veg goes straight into that and then into jars. Some is really nice eaten dried (pineapple and kale) otherwise just soak in warm water for half an hour before cooking.

Keeps for months and looks rather pretty. One of the best things we ever bought - and now I don’t feel quite so much of a nutty prepper as I did before.

OMG - Jack Monroe’s hot banana pot. Just tried it and it’s bloomin’ gorgeous.

I hate wasting food and was going to have to make some banana loaf. Not now - I can put my feet up Grin.

Hidden food from the teenagers! I now store peanut butter, jam, honey, biscuits, muesli bars and such like in the understairs cupboard, with all the cleaning supplies. I can't see a teenager going in there! Grin So instead of just grabbing another from the cupboard when the one on the shelf is finished, they have to wait until I 'go shopping'. It's a fine line to tread, ensuring that hungry teens are fed (especially the growth-spurting boy Shock) without them just inhaling everything in sight through boredom or fancy.

We made tortilla chips out of an assortment of random wraps from the freezer. We spread over a small amount of defrosted chilli, grated cheese and made guacamole from an avocado mashed with oil and garlic. Tasty nachos!

I use my freezer a lot at the best of times, but yesterday I pulled every single thing out and made a list of what I have, so I can meal plan a bit better. Ive always eaten broccoli stalks though Smile

I don't have a microwave ... could I do that banana pot thing in the oven? Looks lovely

Oh I always freeze grapes! I think they taste better.
...good ice cubes for drinks too

I’m making weird combos of food and freezing a lot of fruit that I normally wouldn’t eat - I hate when it starts to get a bit old and the texture and smell changes, but if you freeze it (like bananas chopped into slices) it’s ok again!

I’ve given up eating salad though, just can’t keep it fresh!

Bananas Foster, it's sliced up bananas warmed through in a small frying pan with some butter and sugar, let it briefly gently bubble.
Take it to a new level by adding a splosh of rum/liqueur/vodka etc and spooning the hot sauce over vanilla or chocolate or coffee ice cream.
This will also work with orange segments or slices, and cutted up pears.

Ha ha I'm eating a bowl with some special fried rice, half a tin of bean salad and a spoonful of my keema bhuna in it for a bit of flavour. Just so I don't throw it out. I'm eating the kids crusts with cuppa soups!

Going to look at these banana hot pots!

Sharing ready made meals (they only make up 2-3 meals a week, as I can't be arsed to cook much at mo) that OH doesn't really need all to himself. Plus he might be giving up work ☹️, so he won't need to eat as much.

Also, romaine lettuce is my favourite lettuce, and I do sometimes braise when it's not as fresh.

Chucking a Parmesan rind into the freezer for risotto.

I've made jam from strawberries and raspberries which had gone too soft to eat. Peanut butter from plain peanuts which no-one was eating. Made butter from leftover double cream after seeing a friend making some the other day. Mushroom sauce with mushrooms that were starting to go wrinkly. I bought some discounted bags of veggies for soup mix and put them in the freezer, going to make soup with them later today so DH can take that into work with the leftover bread outsiders for his lunch.

DH saved 4 litres of milk from being thrown out at a coffee shop near his work when they were closing so we have loads of milk here and I've shoved some into the freezer so it won't go off before we use it. I've got bread in there too for toast as you can cook it straight from the freezer and it means the fresh bread we have is used for sandwiches etc.

"Ukrainian beans" - I found some mixed beans I had frozen ages ago, which had gone a bit shrivelled up - I defrosted and mashed them and fried them with loads of garlic - I'm sure they are nothing like Ukrainian beans, but the fancy name distracted them from asking too many questions - it was a bit like humous gone a bit wrong.

gram flour - I had bought it to make onion bhajis but we have no onions left so I made pastry with it - to say it was edible is putting a positive spin on it, but it is a source of protein, so what's not to like?

A favourite here is the Castilian Garlic and Bread soup (Sopa de Ajo) great for using up stale bread, extremely hearty, flavourful and filling. Some recipes use chopped up ham, but leave it out for a vegetarian version.
