'Lonely this Christmas' was sung by .....Blush Blush Elvis Presley Blush Blush.

How have I got to the ripe old age of not-quite-but-nearly 40 and not known that Mud, yes Mud, recorded this song?

I am totally shocked [shocked].

Watched TOTP 2013 last night...and there they were...with some bloody puppet..I can not express my confusion, embarrassment, disbelief.

Can anyone else join me....and make me feel less of a....knob?

I knew it was Mud as I was 14 then. I don't think Elvis ever did it.

Quite a few people have done cover version.

Elvis may have sung it, but he definitely didn't release it before Mud. And I'm pretty sure he didn't record it in the two and a half years between the Mud No1 and his death.

Hmm maybe I was thinking of Blue Christmas....

But.. but. He DID sing a version though didn't he.

Didn't he?

I'm sure there's a video knocking about on youtube featuring him singing it.

Elvis did record the song too though...

Les was chosen to sing the song because his Elvis impersonation rocked.

And I say that as someone who saw him live.

Les Grey was always the working men's club Elvis. Bloody good at it, too, as a homage.

Skogkat Smile.

We need a humble pie icon for you! Wink
My mum and dad should remember the song, and must have seen Mud singing it on TOTPs back in the day, but yesterday I asked them who sang it and they both said Elvis!

Even when I told them it was Mud, they insisted it was Elvis????

It like there's been some weird conspiracy...I can understand people who were too young to remember when it was released, but it totally threw me that my parents who were in their mid twenties when it was released could have forgotten about Mud and now think it's Elvis.

Wow. I feel....awkward....now. Because yesterday I had a big argument about exactly this. And I was adamant that it was Elvis.

My husband's world tilted a bit on it's axis when I told him it wasn't Elvis singing, so you were absolutely not alone Smile

I hate threads like this!

Yes, I knew it was Mud. Because it was 1974 when it was the Christmas No1, and I danced to it. And it's not the earliest Xmas No1 I remember either. Xmas Grin

I had no idea. I even argued the toss last night while TOTP2 was on and I could clearly see it wasn't Elvis.

Was he not trying to sound like Elvis because it was written for Elvis and he refused it?

Report
Bunbaker · 23/12/2013 07:09

It most definitely was Mud. I am old enough to remember it as I was 16 at the time. He does sound like Elvis though.

Thank everyone.
I'm relieved it's not just me sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
It's amazing isn't it, but in a bad way.
Shaky, eh?
"What are we like?" and all that! Grin
