Infant feeding

Salma Hayek BFing infant boy in Africa

For those of you who are interested Dlisted (very snarky blog) has posted a video of Salma Hayek on a Unicef visit in Sierra Leone.
They're discussing the issues of infant mortality and how BFing plays such an important role in helping eradicate it.
Salma herself (still nursing her one year old daughter) decides to nurse a sick week old infant.
I just saw the clip and it's incredibly sweet and emotional- not to mention informative.

Have a look on Dlisted.com. I'm sure it's on much more serious websites but haven't found it anywhere else yet.

weebump, that's part of what made me sad, plus wondering what would happen to the baby afterwards.

I see what you mean weebump but i think my overwhelming feeling would have been gratitude that the baby was getting some milk.

Also to be fair she didn't look that glam - in fact very normal.

That poor mother though. Imagine having a hungry, sickly new born, and a glamorous film star swans in and feeds your baby in a way you can't, probably calming the wee one like never before. She must have felt pretty sad and inadequate.

Sat watching this, feeding my 22mth DD with tears streaming down my face. How awful to not to have enough milk to feed your baby, or to watch your baby die of something so preventable

breath not break of course.

what an incredible video - the footage of the little one taking her last break is heart-breaking. But the footage of Salma feeding the little newborn is incredible. Makes me so proud to have been able to breastfeed my own children.

maybe not glossed over, just hurried.

Gosh that actually bought tears to my eyes. I'd like to see Angelina doing that .

Can't believe the headline is about cross feeding rather than tetanus when you see the content.

Thank you for posting that. It made me cry (in a good way) - such a lovely thing to do.

The first part of the video was so sad.

can't watch sad things, too hormonal I did forward to the bit where she fed the baby, I love Salma Hayek, what a woman!

Haven't watched the video but that's so sad, I don't think I could have done that knowing that I would have to hand the baby back to whatever was going to happen.

ruty, I didn't feel it wasn't glossed over. Sadly when you hear the awful statistics it's evident that they see many newborn deaths in the clinic.

That was what I thought Portandlemon, but I wondered if there might be some sort of frozen transportation.

they actually showed a baby's last breath rather glossed over i felt.

Is it newborn tetanus these babies are getting? When do they vaccinate? At birth?

Thank you so much for that aurorec and pooka. What an amazing video. Unbearably sad and also hugely heartwarming. Salma Hayek is just fabulous.

I'm reasonably certain not -- think about the logistics involved.

What a lovely video, it restores faith in human nature.

PortandLemon it was.
The poor mother looked so lost and bewildered. The thought that those babies could be saved so easily makes me sick.

Are their schemes that donate breastmilk to 3rd world countries?

Not offended at all!

And thank you for giving the info in the first place. It's a really interesting subject. I certainly would cross feed in that situation. I like Salma.
