SUDC - Sudden Unexpected Death in Childhood

With the recent plight of Maude and her family I was interest if anyone has ever heard of the above and come across the organisation which supports this. I am proactively trying to create an awareness of this issue in the UK, and would like to hear from people who have or havent heard of this. I will be happy to share what I am hoping to achieve and fund raising I am currently doing in relation to this.

Hairycaterpillar...it breaks my heart everyday to hear of another child to succumb to this. FSID have informed me they have someone researching into this in the UK but nothing will be available for a couple of years.

I fortunately like you have my child...but there is not a day that goes by that i dont think and pray for those who are not so fortunate.

A friend of ours wee boy (born same day as my DS1) died at 15mths...no cause found.

Another friend lost her 3yr old with no definate cause found.

Losing a child is devastating whatever the cause. If awareness can be raised and money raised for research into SUDC surely thats a good thing. Reading threads like this reminds me just how fortunate I am to have healthy happy children and I should treasure every moment...even on days when they drive me up the wall.

SUDC is not related to heart problems...there is no cause found as with cot deatch

CRY is a cardiac site for types of cardiomyopathy which cause sudden collapse and often death.I have this condition but the difference is it is diagnosed and atm is controlled with medication.Misdees dh has another form which is caused by a virus and he has just had a transplant which is going brilliantly.

There was a three year old a few months ago in our area who died in her sleep no apparent reason, I also know of a couple of adults from my work place - not connected and one widely publicised and have heard of another but the pathologists could not agree and I am unsure of the final outcome.

I wanted to say a big thank you for all your responses. It has made me realise how little is known about SUDC and many people believe SIDS disappears at the age of 12 months.

I am in contact with FSID in relation to the above and I really do hope to make a difference!

Yes, Maude died of SUDC - she was over the age where it is classified as SIDS, and there were no contributing factors. Her heart just stopped.

That is so kind of you littlelaplin. I had the most heartbreaking yet worthy experience of my life meeting with Melissa and Josh. They were visiting London from Australia and took the time to meet with me for all my awareness and fundraising efforts in relation to Cooper and SUDC. I know she only works part-time so she may not get back in touch until Monday.

oh, by the way, I do realise you weren't asking for stories about aduilts dying off it, just thought, that I rememebr reqding that story and I had never ever realised that Adults can die of the adultversion of SIDS...I think it's called SADS or something...

SUDC is the organisation. SIDS is at the greatest risk between 4 and 6 months. It is rare in babies over the age of 12 months and yet still 1 in 100,000 seem to meet this fate. FSID in the UK support all children who pass from SIDS but SUDC is the only organisation in the world who particularly help bereaved family and fund the research of babies over the age of 12 months

Thanks for your comments, I think there is some confusion SUDC support children over the age of 12 months who succumb to SIDS...ie as with Maude who sadly passed in January. Its not due to the heart stopping, they stop breathing as in SIDS.

In the posting it was asking why raise the issue of our children dying. Its a difficult area I agree, but most people believe the risk of SIDS disappears after the age of 12 months....it doesnt. Cooper and Maude sadly show this.
