Hi ladies, I was wondering if the name Libby could be shortened? it's already quite a short name, but me and hubby would like a nickname option. 😁 Preferably something unique, as "Lib" and its varients are overused. Thank you lovelies!

As you're a cool kid nicknaming a nickname OP, I'd go with a PP suggestion of Libia like labia. Cos who doesn't like some lips!!

Libby is a lovely name, but definitely no need to worry about what nickname you would use. Surely that would happen organically?

If I met someone called Libby, I wouldn’t give them a nickname because I would assume that was already their nickname. It’s like asking for a nickname for Chris!

Actually, Libby is not just a nickname for Elizabeth. It was originally derived from Ibb, a medieval diminutive of Isabel. It can also be a nickname for Liberty.

I think Libby works fine as a standalone name, but other than Lib/Libs there really aren't any other natural shortenings for it.

My DD's friend Libby is known as Lobster.

@PonderingPeggy

IME nicknames that stick are the ones that evolve naturally and are usually chosen by the child's friends.

This.

Libby is a nickname

She’ll most likely get Lib or Libs but a unique nickname is generally one that develops naturally and usually has little or no connection to the actual name.

I really like Libby as a nickname for Elizabeth, I’m not criticising the name. Just the weird desire for a unique yet preplanned nickname for a name that’s already a short form

She will be Lib or Libs.

Seriously, if you find yourself at the point you're searching for a slightly off-the-wall or different to the usual nn you can use because you're not keen on the usual one - stop and pick another name!

You can't control nicknames. You could insist on Lilpop or Lola or LB til you're blue in the face then by the time she's half way through primary she's decided she's Lib to her friends and that will be that.

If you don't like Lib/Libs then don't have Libby.

Also yes, most people will assume she's Elizabeth.

@Love51 because it's stupid. A nickname is already a nickname. Why do you want to nickname your nickname?

You can't have a nickname for a nickname

How can't I?

The Libby's I know are short for Elizabeth and Liberty. I suppose as others have mentioned you could get Libs or Bee, but it's not a name typically shortened.

Libia....to rhyme with Labia

But Seriously, Libby does NOT need a nickname!

Dd calls her friend Libs.

Not sure about a further nickname, but it strikes me that Libby and Demi would be great names for twins, if you're politically that way inclined!

Hi!

Funnily enough My name is LIBBY and not Elizabeth! Only a few times in my life have I been asked if my real name is Elizabeth!

People call me

Libs
Lib
Libster
Loubylou
Sometimes even libbyloula! So not always shortened 😂

I'd have classed Libby as a diminutive of Elizabeth and perfectly acceptable to give as a name in its own right.

To me, nicknames are the ones formed/chosen in the person's relationships and may not even be used as a name in any other circumstance.

diminutive: a shortened form of a name, typically used informally.

nickname: a familiar or humorous name given to a person or thing instead of or as well as the real name.
