Last minute name doubt!

I was set on the name Seren if baby turns out to be a girl but now having last minute doubts! We live in England and have no obvious welsh connection. I doubt family/ friends have heard of the name Seren before.I guess I am worried about reactions and crazy pronunciations... I had been thinking about this name before baby was conceived but now not so sure.. Is this the hormones?

I am having similar doubts about one of the boys names I had previously loved! Argh!

I have a Seren, she is 9. We are not Welsh, I just loved the name. I do have to spell it often, and she has been called Sarah or Seven, or Serene! But I'm still thrilled I chose it.

It's a lovely name, I know a little Seren and she is an absolute poppet x

Honestly I really don't like it and pronunciation will be hard but it's your baby and all that matters is that you like the name, I wouldn't be influenced by other peoples decisions

Thank you @Mike, @MildThing, @MrsBibby.

That's pretty much what I thought.

My friend has a Seren - Id never heard it before, but once I’d heard it said once it caused no problems. It’s very pretty, you should stick with it!

Oh just noticed Mild posted that!

I love the name. My 15 year old was at nursery with an awesome Seren.

Frangible
The welsh word is pronounced
SERR-enn.
The stress is on the first syllable (cf. Karen, Chloe etc).

Morado
It will date.

I hate it, sorry.

@DramaAlpaca, could you try to write how to pronounce it the proper Welsh way? All I gather is that it’s NOT ‘SERR-un with a schwa for the second syllable.

Is it more ‘Seren’ with both syllables equally stressed and both with a definite ‘e’ sound (the ‘e’ of ‘get’?)?

It's nice. I prefer it pronounced the proper Welsh way, but it's a pretty name whichever way.

I think its beautiful. Love Merryn too.

Really sorry but I don't like it. It's hard to know how to pronounce it. As someone with an Italian name (I'm English) I found it very annoying growing up when no one could say it properly

Thank you for the messages :) I really loved it from the first time I heard it so it feels weird that I am having doubts now.

@MikeUniformMike

I disagree and this chart shows that it's peak was about 6 years ago....

Seren is a lovely name.

Oh, and Stella, of course. I really like that.

I don't like it, personally. Seraphina or Serenity or good old-fashioned Sarah?

Report
Frangible · 10/09/2019 09:08

I like it, although all the Serens I know, if not Welsh, have some Welsh connection.

It’s pretty. Not welsh at all but I would just pronounce it it’s written - serr-un.

Nice!

It's awful. It's a name that will date quickly.
It is just the welsh word for star.
The Serrun pronunciation makes me think of Sharon and Shannon.
The welsh word is pronounced SERR-enn.
