Hector is very posh Scottish : so it could work with your rather unusual name taste! Old fashioned but with maybe a dash of hipster. Same for Hamish and Angus I would say. Hugh also...

I went to school with lots of Ferguses. The posh ( I mean like aristocrats!) English did adopt all the names above and Fergus for quite some time.

I still like Cormac... but it's still Irish!!
So what definitely wouldn't work is telling people in Scotland that you wanted to give your DS a Scottish name and then telling them you chose Cormac.

Really? Shoot. May I ask why? I mean, what's different about Scotland and Cedric?

In my almost 50 years of living and working in the Edinburgh area I have never, ever, come across a Cedric. It sounds so very 'English' that it would set your little boy apart in ways that might not be beneficial to him.

Gregor would awesome, Cormac is ace and I think most Scots and Irish would have no problem with 'their' names being used. There are some very posh Hamishes around! The poshest Scot I knew was called Menzies (commonly nn is 'Ming'). There are lots of others great names.

I went to school in central Edinburgh in the 1970s with the some of the children of Uni Lecturers - we had a Gulliver (Gilly), a Julian and a Titus in my class. Edinburgh can cope with unusual names, but Cedric is a step too far.

OOps. It's Scottish according to one of these naming websites...
I think? Wait, I'll google it. Oops, apparently Cormag is Scottish but Cormac is Irish? Blush

I think it will have to be a decision between Jonathan, Gregory and Hector and maybe Cormac... (I really like Hector. So glad DH suggested that). Although not sure I want a name to be "posh", tbh Blush

Menzies sounds like the word for your period in my native language Blush

You don't need to pick a Scottish name and most kids are lovely but there's always going to be those wee terrors that pick on others but tbh that could happen wether you called a child Cedric or not! If you love the name then go for it that's all that matters! It's not a BAD name it's just not my cup of tea! I'm Scottish but neither of my children have Scottish names, but they are fairly common names though! Sorry if the phrase 'slagged' was a bit much I should have said 'picked on' for eg, need to watch my slang on these forums Blush

What an eclectic mix!!
I think Max and Gregory are my faves

Sort of like Antonin but will get shortened to Ant, not into that

Love Anton, but if you live in an English speaking country I imagine he'll often be mistaken for Anthony.

I like Gregory (but prefer Gregor) and Jonathan. Maximilian OK, but prefer Maxwell.

Cedric doesn't appeal.

BikeRun

Hm... Now I'm wondering if I could come to like Anthony... Or if I should scratch it off.

I like Gregory (but prefer Gregor). Do Gregor and Gregory have different connotations or is it just personal preference?

What an eclectic mix!!

I guess I'll take it as a compliment.
I don't really like Ant either, tbh. But I do like Tony... :)

Queen

Oh gosh, no. Don't worry.

"Wee terrors"... Well, that makes them sound adorable...Blush

"If you love the name then go for it"... Ah, Idk. It's a lovely sentiment. But I like Castor and Copernicus. And Uriel... Maybe not ;)

I love Gregor though! Know an adult Gregor (in his 20s) and he was a cool guy, always called Gregor never shortened to Greg

Queensparkles · 07/04/2017 21:14

Copernicus? You're winding me up now eh? That's a new one lol

Report
ChippieFishieHorshie · 07/04/2017 21:17

Copernicus

Well, no. I think it's a lovely name. And if Castor wasn't the stomach loosening oil in the UK...

And whilst I'm definitely brave enough... No need to make things intentionally difficult for a LO, right?

Copernicus is a surname. The famous physicist's first name was Nicolaus.

I like Antonin (had heard of it before) and Anton.

Prefer Gregor to Gregory, I think. Jonathan is a classic. Cedric doesn't really do it for me. Prefer Maxim to Maximilian and Julian to Julius.

You might like Nathaniel, Roderick, Hendrick?

Report
Queensparkles · 07/04/2017 21:19

Yeah your right, I've never heard of that name in my life, but we all have different tastes things would be boring if we all like the same thing! Copernicus could be the middle name Wink

Bike But I still like it... I think it's a really fabulous name. Maybe if we ever get a dog?

Laquila
Not a fan of Nathaniel (and it's the godfather's name...). Roderick has too many rs.

Henrick is nice. But there are Henrys in DH's family (and Henrik/Heinrichs in mine...)

Corvus is awesome! I love it.

Based on your last few posts (which seem like you've gone off of Anton) I'm moving my vote to Hector. It's really not overly posh these days, but cool and classic.

What about John Hector? Or John Corvus?

Laquila · 07/04/2017 21:25

Just seen someone's suggested Conrad, which I LOVE. Also you might like Anselm, Benedict, Christian, Frederick, Marcus.

Also keen on Hector - sounds strong (obviously!) and solid to me, but not boring.
