Baby names

James or Samuel?

I'm 32 weeks with baby number 1, we don't know gender but have finally settled on a girl's name. For a boy we are torn between these two, which would you pick and why?

Every James I've known has been James too. No nickname needed.

Of should be no.

As in 'no need'

James is a one syllable name. Of need (technically) for it to be shortened. The James in our family has always been James.

I like both! Both really lovely names.

I'm not keen on Jim or Jimmy as a nickname for James but I love Jamie.

I love James. I have a daughter though with a top 10 name (or a variation of it) so perhaps I don't mind being common. Despite this, we rarely meet anyone of the same name. My other dd has a highly unusual name and in her Guide pack there are two of them. Best not to worry what anyone else is doing and choose the one you like best.

Thanks for the opinions. It seems like James is the favourite. I do love it but worry it is too popular and as someone said maybe traditional in a boring way. Finding girls' names so much easier.

NavyandWhite, I'm not sure if we'd shorten. I like Jamie and Sam, not a fan of Jim/Jimmy. I really like the full names too though so I guess it would be down to his preference.

Samuel, although I do have one!

Soozi I used to know s Samuel Anthony Myer Surname, who was so named for similar reasons.

Samuel. James is traditional in a boring way whereas Samuel is traditional in a cool way.

James (biased). Ours is generally known as JD (also using middle initial)
