Friend called their daughter what we want to call our son!

I'm due in less than 2 weeks and DH and I were pretty much decided on our son's name, Avery. We really like it and we're planning to go with it.

However, a few weeks ago I met a friend of a friend who had a baby girl 7 weeks ago. We have become really close in the last few weeks and she ha just moved to the same area of us. Problem is, she and her DH named their daughter Avery Blush

My DH is still keen to call our boy Avery, but it feels kind of weird now. What would you do?

Reminds me of the "making a murderer" guy... Steven Avery.

Awful name for a boy or girl even without that connotation

Troys And Phoenix was to mean "rise from the ashes" because he was my rainbow baby after two dead children, so imagine how your comment made me feel. So thanks for that

Walking Troy was my cat who died suddenly of heart failure 3 weeks ago. He and his dead brother Barnaby were named after characters in Midsomer Murders so thanks for that.

Troys Each to their own, personally I think Troy is an awful name but I wouldn't go round commenting so unless provoked My DD's name is just as unusual but I don't regret it nor do I want validation/criticism from randomers on the Web

Phoenix? My, your Ds had a lucky escape.

My DS was named Phoenix before he was even conceived! Acquaintance named her DS Phoenix 4 weeks before mine was born. She wasn't a proper friend but it was weird enough to change the name because of how unusual it is, would have looked like blatant copying (wish i'd announced it before birth lol).

I actually named him the same name as another friends DD (but her DD was a year older) because it was a family name and i decided not to change again for anyone else's benefit (plus it's spelled different).

I know of 3 Averys under the age of 6 - all are girls, and as it's a 'hip' name there will be plenty more little females given this name in the next few years, which could cause issues for your DS.

For a boy, you could go for Auden, August... so many more masculine names to choose from.

Our boy is Rowan (pronounced Ro-un, rather than row-un or ro-han) and I have had Avery on and off my list at various times with another boy in mind. I also love Kit and Arlo. Slightly annoying for that happen with your favourite name, but I wouldn't necessarily let it put me off, if I was you.

Anselm?

Similar feel to avert. Old English. Quite cool I think. And will certainly be the only one in the county

I know a teenage girl called Avery, the family is Canadian and her mum said that it is very popular name for girls in Canada.
About boys-girls names - there is a quite nice and popular boy's name in Russia (Nikita), but it is considered girls name in UK ( USA, France etc). So many boys with this name are becoming known by the nickname (Nik) and some are really hate their BC name with passion.

LadyMonica that's interesting: I have friends who are Welsh (her) and Indian (him) with a son Rohan, and just assumed it was of Indian origin - not that it matters either way, but good to know.

That's a shame OP I really like Avery for a boy.

Rowan is nice and i know boy and girl ones, Rohan is a completely different name and is pronounced totally differently. I'd use it if I or DH had indian heritage but not otherwise.

I also know a male and female Piper. living within a few streets of each other.

I know a male Brooke too but that seems particularly odd tbh.

Other options similar to Avery:

Brodie
Emerson/Emmet
Evan
Innes
Calvin
Keir
Hayden
Logan
Dale
Edgar
Lawrie
Torbin

We know lots of Averys, they are aged from 20. All female. Gulliver is an unusual male name with a similar feel to it.

Avery makes me think of old fashioned weighing scales, like the ones you used to see in the butchers shop. Rowan is lovely but how about Austin?
