What do you think of the name Lydia?

Helenwiththebigmelons · 08/04/2016 18:51

It's the only suitable/things I really like. I want a girl's name that is not only lovely for a little one, but fitting for an adult too.

I like Winfred, but I dislike the shortened name Winnie. I also like Beatrice, but I dislike Betty.

What are your thoughts?

Thank you Smile

I live Lydia; it's up there with Sylvie for me.

I have a Lydia. She turned 8 yesterday. The only draw back with her name is she doesn't like that she can't often find things with her name on in shops! We call her Lydia Lou as a nickname, sometimes shortened to Lou Lou. I still love her name and can't imagine her being anything else.

Oh I like Lydia & always think of "En- cy- clo- pydia" & tattooed lady as well.

It could not be further from Karen or Tracey. Poles apart. Really.

Sorry, but that's rubbish, Nospringflower. Of course it's not in the same group of names as Karen and Tracey. I went to school with loads of those and never a single Lydia throughout the school. It's from a completely different era, and far more unusual and classier. Your opinion is very unusual, I don't think anyone else would think of bracketing Lydia with 'Karen and Tracey'!

Lydia Bennet.

Her fondness for cock 'male company' and how she nearly ruined her sisters' marriage prospects. The harlot.

It's a pretty name though.

I like it.

If I had a DD2 I was considering Lidia, spelt the Polish way after a nurse who looked after DD1 in hospital.

I rather tend to agree that it's tedious.

Although, given the current vogue for place names as first names...

Patty I'm not that big on name meanings but it's a shame Lydia doesn't have a nice meaning. Bit tedious, if you ask me

Beatrice was really quite common in my mother's generation (and was in fact my mum's middle name).*

The ones I knew were all called Beatie/Beaty by friends and family.

I think Bibi is a possible nickname, as a redoubling of Bea.

The meaning is rather sweet -"she who makes happy / blessed" - same Latin root as the verb "beatify".

*According to the historical data, 38th most popular name in 1914, 57th most popular in 1924, completely disappears from the top 100 thereafter.

BTW, Lydia is a name that crops up in the Bible (Acts, in the New Testament). It's Greek, means "woman of Lydia", so was historically also popular with families keen on the Classical tradition.

I love Lydia. Knew one at school, and one now I'm a grown up. Both lovely people. But I also had great aunts Winifred, Beatrice and Elsie, who were rather amazing for their time, so I love those names too!

I love it. I lived next door to a girl called Lidia (Siciliana family iirc) when I was little so the name usually makes me think of her. And she and her family were lovely :)

Love the name Lydia. Winnifred not so much. My DGM had a friend Winnifred who would be about 100 now so to me it's an old lady's name.
