So if DC3 is a girl, I am keen on an older style name, appreciating many people may find them fusty and not their thing. Which couple of these do you like and which do you think should be avoided like the plague?! Thanks.

Audrey
Dora
Greta
Lois
Victoria/ Vita
Iris
Emmeline
Sylvia/ Sylvie
Rilla
Esme
Rosemary/ Romy
Rosalind
Naomi
Evelyn
Juliet
Rosa

I like Greta, Sylvia and Rosalind from your list.

In fact, Sylvia is my favourite girls' name, and I wish I had called DD1 that, but it's too late, now. Grin

Iris
Emmeline

I have an Emmeline, shortened to Emmy.

We love it, but she gets called Emily, Amy, Annie, Anna…so beware!

I'm not keen on Dora, Lois, Esme and Rilla, Naomi is Ok, but I love the others. In fact Greta and Rosa were possibles on our lists (DS would have had Rosa as a middle name if he'd been a girl). Really like Vita (Sacksville-West), imagine discovering Orlando was written for your namesake. Bliss!

I love Iris and Rosa.
Iris is firmly up there if I ever have another girl

Thanks everyone. Lots of food for thought!

Lol Birdinthehand, that does just about some up the comments Smile

Thanks to those who suggested Maud, Vera, and Rita. Love these. DH not as keen but lukewarm on Rita.

My favourites are Greta (DH not 100%), Audrey and Dora. I've loved Emmeline for ages but the mishearing opportunities do really deter me.

Betcha it's a boy now Grin

How about Zita or Zena?

Emmeline and Sylvia...gorgeous, love the Suffragette theme. Vita, Lois and Greta, fabulous, a bit glam but also strong.
Naomi is lovely, really nice to say.

But no Iris..too popular and reminds of passport recognition system.

All lovely names. I think my favourite is Sylvia, I also really like Romy. But they are all really nice names.

I like them all except Dora and Sylvia, and I don't really think of Victoria as old fashioned, it's been fairly popular all my life. I think my favourites are Iris, Rosemary and Naomi.

I love Dora (how about Nora or Flora if Dora the Explorer bothers you?), Lois, Iris, Esme.

Dislike Audrey (Coronation Street), Victoria (too many Vickys in the 1980's), Emmeline (reminds me of pigs for some reason, a children's book?), Naomi.

Violet! Vintage Violet.
Jennifer is due a comeback.
Jane?

Have a great friend Juliet so biased. People shorten to Julie too, so bear in mind.

Thumbs up to Esme also. Many of the others have odd connotations fir me fir various reasons is wouldn't consider.

Rilla too close to Rizla??!

Emmeline also good.

I would keep:
Greta
Vita
Juliet
Sylvia
Romy

The rest are nice but seem a little 'generic granny chic' to me. The ones I would keep have a European quality to them as well as being old names.

Rilla? Is that a name?

Greta definitely not, for me, too harsh. Esme sounds try -hard to be cool.

Emmeline is beautiful.

Iris..surely not. Would you like to be called Iris? Could your husband whisper it into your ear and it be romantic or sexy? We have to remember our dc's are going to grow up and won't be for ever sitting in a cath kidston kitchen.

Sylvie is beautiful for a little girl, mand also for a woman.

I think these are great! Except Rilla. But only that one.

I even like Lois.

Report
MummyBeerest · 24/10/2014 02:25

Oh and Sylvie.

My favourite would be Esme.

MrsTerrorPratchett · 24/10/2014 02:36

Esme (obviously since it a TP name) and Emmeline. No Esmeralda? I know it's witchy but that's cool!

Audrey - I'm on the fence about this one. I know it's a nice classic name but I'm just not crazy about the sound. I wouldn't use it but I'd be happy to meet a little Audrey.

Dora - I really don't like this one, sorry.

Greta - this is really nice! I really like it as a nn for Margaret.

Lois - Oy, I really don't like this. Sounds kind of like sound a cow makes.

Victoria/ Vita - Really don't care for Victoria but Vita is very cool!

Iris - This is nice but feels overdone to me.

Emmeline - Gah, I really love this name. That said, I think it'll be very dated in 20 years' time. I also love Emily and Emma, for what it's worth.

Sylvia/ Sylvie - Sylvie is adorable but I'm afraid everyone else thinks it's adorable too! :(

Rilla - sounds like short for Marilla. I don't really like it.

Esme - No, way too trendy.

Rosemary/ Romy - I like Rosemary but don't care much for Romy.

Rosalind - love this name! Totally underused.

Naomi - the sound is too close to mayonnaise in my accent.

Evelyn - This seems like the Caitlin and Ashlyn of today. In other words, I don't like it.

Juliet - Too cheesy. I prefer Julia by FAR.

Rosa - never have liked this or Rose. Rosalind and Rosemary are nicer.

Rosalind is lovely.

Dulcie was on our short list, with Saskia.

But we ended up with a Lois.

Juliet is the best by far. I love Juliet.
