DP wants this for DC2 if he's a boy, but I'm not convinced....

Help convince me...or not!

Excellent name; especially paired with Edward.

Really dislike it, sorry. Love Lewis though.

Lovely name. Fantastic coupled with Edward.

Agree with Alis, never known there to be an issue with pronouncing Louis

May or may not be relevant. In UK top 100 boys names 2012:

Lewis = 43
Louie =79
Louis =81

Our DS is Louis pronounced Lewie. We have had a couple of people telling us we are pronouncing it wrong and trying to tell us it should be Lewis but we just ignored them.

Lovely name.Smile

I've taught 4 boys called Louis. 3 of them pronounced it Lewis so Louie is the minority pronunciation around my way (England).

And no don't change spelling to assist those unable to pronounce louis
Applying that logic there'd be she-vawn, ay-lee spellings for siobahn and eilidh

I've never known anybody have an issue with Louis prn -Louie until looking at these boards.

I don't tend to take my leads for pronouncing names from Americans when said name is from another country entirely.

Traditionally Louis has always been Louie in the UK.

In scotland lewis,is obviously loo-is.like the island and louis is french loo-ee
I suppose ive not really encountered people having difficulty pronouncing louis or distinguishing between the 2names
If it really grates for op then you'd have to correct the pronunciation fir folk

Really like Louis pr Louie. Was a contender for ds. The only reason we didn't choose it is because it's the name of the Lord Mayor of our town.

Might be best to spell it Louie to help non French speakers pronounce it correctly, if you prefer that way.

Report
evamummy · 04/05/2014 07:51

Not everyone pronounces Louis the French way. In the US the city is pronounced St Louis (Lou-is) and in many European countries it is also pronounced phonetically (Lou-is).

My bestest friend in the whole world has a son called Louis, and for that reason alone, I love it.

Love it but people will definitely keep calling him Lewis

I came on to say I really liked it,especially as you are intending to pronounce it correctly.

People commonly pronouncing Louis as Lewis doesn't make it right, it just makes a fair few people wrong.

However Hen has just totally ruined the name for me.

Every time I read or hear Louis these days a picture of Louis Walsh's little face pops into my head.
Sorry.
