Berlin for a girls name!?

We are expecting twin girls in July and are obviously already stressing about names Shock OH likes Berlin for one but I'm not so sure... Is it a proper name? Is it a bit out there? Will it grow on me? We were thinking middle name Beatrix so I suppose she could use that....Thanks

'Berloo' was a popular nickname for 'Beryl' at one time.

Must say that I think 'Linden' is a prettier option. Linden trees are very graceful, and linden blossom has a lovely perfume. To me, Berlin has associations of the Berlin Wall and consequent human suffering. Or else it has tacky Sally Bowles/Cabaret echoes (I hated the film and did not find it glamorous).

But perhaps you could use Berlin as a middle name if the city - which is of course also very splendid and historical - has special associations for you.

We get the 'is that where she was conceived' question about DD2 and her name is an actual name, as well as a city (admittedly we only get this from people that don't realise the city was named after a person). Would that bother you? Does Berlin hold any special significance for you?

Tallinn and Riga might be OK... and Vilnius for a boy's name

Twins Buda and Pest? Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau? Ross and Cromarty?

There's a place called Groitzsch in Saxony.

No sorry does not sound in the slightest feminine...

Berlin?! Is that a joke?

I abhor children's names that are cities or places of interest. They are so tacky.

However Beatrix is just lovely. Maybe go with that and spare your poor child years of ridicule.

I know a Berlin, but she doesn't like the name. Sydney? London? Odessa? Sofia?

"It wouldn't be fair to have a Berlin and an Imogen for example."

Why- because Berlin would be so jealous of her sister having a proper human beings's name?

You might like to choose one of the cities Berlin is twinned with for the other twin:

Los Angeles - Paris - Madrid - Istanbul - Warsaw - Moscow - Budapest - Brussels - Jakarta - Tashkent - Mexico City - Beijing - Tokyo - Buenos Aires - Prague - Windhoek - London

Any inspiration there?

Great city, one of the best! Dreadful name. Don't do it. She'll HATE it. You'll kill her confidence with a name that will have meaning for you but not for her. She's her own entity, her own person with her whole life ahead of her. Give her a name to be proud of.
