AIBU?

Is this grim or am I being pathetic?

As the title says. Name changed as I really don’t know if it’s just me.

Went to a local garden centre for coffee with my mum today. While we were there we purchased two jacket potatoes.

I ordered bacon with cheese for my potato. I have a suspected allergy and am following a diet that removes foods. At this moment I cannot have legumes in any form among other things.

When my food came they brought beans and cheese. I cannot have this. The girl that came out asked to look at the receipt and I pointed out what I’d ordered. She seemed to have a huge issue with taking it away and giving me what I’d paid for.

5 minutes later my food returned. I could see straight away that she had scraped the beans off and replaced it with cheese and bacon.

It’s a Sunday and I wasn’t going to cause a fuss so just took it. The cafe was full by this point.

On eating the food was cold apart from the bacon that they’d just cooked. I also had to pick beans out that she’d missed.

Am I being precious or is this as disgusting as I think. If you work in food standards what would be your opinion. What if id been highly allergic to the beans or the sauce that was stuck all over the potato?

First world problem for me I know but could have been a serious issue for someone else.

Utterly grim.

It would have gone back if it were my food. What a piss take.

Report
BranchGold · 24/03/2024 16:11

I think I would have returned it and asked for what I ordered to be prepared, not an amendment to a wrong plate of food.

Failing that I would have just left it and asked for a refund.

Piss take.

Totally unacceptable. I'm allergic to celery, and number of times I've had a green salad returned with 'the celery picked out'! I can tell fortunately, but it is gross.

Totally unacceptable. You should have gone right back and demanded what you ordered and not some sloppy shite she tried to pass off.

That really is disgraceful service on their part.

With all of the dietary and allergy guidance now, in food prep and service they were very much in the wrong. I would definitely raise it as a complaint.

OP

Sorry for being thick, but did you order all of that?

If not, you should have sent it away making clear you have an allegery and did not order that

One of our children has allegery and the the few times we've stayed at the same hotels for weddings etc, the waiters are very hot on allegories and double check - don't go back there and consider leaving them a negative and factual review

Not on at all - they have no idea that you don’t have an allergy to beans or any ingredients in the tomato sauce and so simply scraping the beans off the potato is grim and they should have replaced the whole dish. As for it being cold apart from the bacon that just shows it was dumped on the side in the kitchen while they cooked the bacon - I’d have returned it a second time and declined a replacement; I’d also have expected them to remove it from the bill/refund cost if already paid

Wonder if you went to the garden centre I left after seeing their jacket potato was £9.99???!!!

my understanding is that the venue is permitted to decline your order if they feel they cannot meet your requirements due to allergies etc.
but I think having accepted your order then they should fulfil it and scraping food off is not safe and poor service. I’m not clear if you informed them of a potential allergy at point of order - did you? If not then this would be advisable but what they did was still not right. I would seriously be wondering about their hygiene to do something like that. I would have asked for a refund. That is not acceptable.

It's not good enough!

you should have said something at the time though.

However, it's not too late. Phone tomorrow & ask to speak to the garden centre Manager (not just the duty manager if the cafe).. ,

Not ok at all. I would have sent it back again and specified the entire meal needs to be prepared from scratch.

I love baked beans but bean juice on a non-beany jacket potato is grim.

I think the allergy thing isn’t all that relevant.

They brought out the wrong food.

They made the error, it’s not difficult to get a fresh jacket potato and add the ingredients you ordered from the menu.

That is grim. And it wasn't even hot. Did you tell them you have an allergy? How much does one potato cost them? 10p? If anything that one should only be served again when someone else wanted beans and it would need to fresh ones added. I'd be really upset about that. Just imagine it was meat chilli and they scraped it off for a vegan?
I'd say don't go back and contact head office to complain.

This is very very poor - where I work, if that's happened, the server would be subject to a rigorous investigation and retraining.

I'd go onto their site and give an honest bad review..Even McDonald's throw away wrong orders and give you the correct one freshly made.

You should have asked to speak to the manager then and there and not eaten it.
From an allergy and health and safety point that is completely unacceptable.
They need training ASAP.
Contact the manager tomorrow. Inform them exactly what happened. If they don't seem interested or that bothered tell them you will be reporting them to the Food Standards Agency.
Take an incident like this seriously. Please.

That's gross. I'd have sent it back again tbh whether they were busy or not. If it's something dry on the plate that they just take off I wouldn't mind but to leave sauce on and stuff is just wrong

No. I very clearly stated what I wanted when I ordered at the till. I ordered bacon and cheese. I didn’t inform them that I was allergic to beans at the point of sale because I didn’t order beans.

When the food came and I told her it was wrong, I explained that I cannot eat legumes.

After much sighing and looking at my receipt she took it away.

it then came back after 5 minutes with the beans scraped off and the bacon added.

I don't think that I would relish the idea, that something somebody else had ordered, and sent it back, and then it got sent out again, and then sent back! Then it hung around in the kitchen, waiting for the right order. Would you want to eat that?

It’s not grim as nothing disgusting about it but I’d have sent it back saying I’m allergic I’ll have a new potato please! No drama.

Report
Kindofcrunchy · 24/03/2024 16:34

Would've thought it would be much more likely that the allergy would be dairy related? Never heard of having an allergy to beans. Isn't it more that your body isn't used to the fibre?

I'd be annoyed about being given the wrong food though.
