To not buy mince in Sainsbury's

1st world problems I know 🤣

But yuck - I wouldn't feed it to a dog.

The new vacuum pac might not affect the taste (I won't be finding out for a long time) but it certainly looks absolutely disgusting.

And it wasn't this colour in store - they were all horrible and brown! 🤢🤮

Well a few of these posts demonstrate exactly why people think Vegans/Vegetarians (but usually Vegans tbh) are sanctimonious twats.

I'm not vegan or veggie but even I think the meat looked better when it was a cow in a field.

@mrsm43s be careful about throwing the word twat around, it makes you sound a little ignorant to be honest. Can't you have a discussion without going straight to insult?

The new packaging doesn’t make the meat look pretty. I guess that’s why they used to sell it in the packaging they used to. It’s not difficult to break up vacuum packed mince, it just takes more time and a wooden spoon with a flat edge. Our vacuum packed spag bol at the weekend tasted just as nice as the air included variety.
There is always the option of going to the butcher and having him mince up a piece of prime steak but when you are on a budget and have no time to do a separate meat shop then Sainsbury's 3% fat vacuum packed will have to do.

I remember being in a French hypermarket when I was about 14 - selo-wrapped snails looked truly vile.

I had the same stuff for the first time at the weekend and it came out of the packet more like sausage meat.

I must admit it broke up fine in the cooking though so it wouldn’t put me off getting it again and I really like the fact there’s so much less waste.

It because it’s vacuum packed rather than packaged in a sulphate atmosphere. @Abccde prefers chemical gases and more plastic waste instead.

I find it bizarre to be so picky when you’re basically eating the ground-up rag-ends of a carcass - it’s not a choice that screams concern for quality!

Nothing wrong with this

You've made my day!

I knew some woke would come on and complain about this. Only remembering mince in it's flowing lines..

Fucks sake. Don't eat it then.

But I'm really pleased that some sap is put out by the packaging of MINCE.

You know before BSE, it was probably all lips and arseholes and ground bones.

No, you probably weren't born.

I picked up mince in a French supermarket and it was only walking round that I noticed it was 'pour Les animaux' 🤣 oops!

I really didn't like the 'stringy' mince. Took ages to bash it down in to mince.

Well done Sainsbury's.

Why? It’s not meat nor a replacement for meat.

Noting wrong with it being brown all meat contains a pigment called myoglobin which appears as a purple colour in freshly cut meat. When this pigment comes into contact with oxygen it forms oxymyoglobin, which produces the bright red colour of beef products, such as mince meat. It just means oxygen isn't leaking through the packaging.

@FurAndFeathers yes I know that's what happens when it oxidises but mince in the normal sealed packets doesn't turn brown unless it's going off.

Your responses are unnecessarily rude.

This is incorrect , it is its contact with oxygen that causes it to stay pink. If it's vacuum packed it won't be exposed to oxygen so turns brown.

Well, it is a replacement, so..

I've used some. It was good

Funny. I felt iffy about it as i often buy organic blah blah blah. But money is tight and it gad money off. And honestly it was the most flavourful mince/beef I've had in uk (I come from a country where beef and other meats have stronger tastes than much of Europe incl UK). I loved it. It wasn't too strong but really lovely

Doesn't the brown colour just mean carbon monoxide isn't used in the packaging process? I remember learning at some point that it was carbon monoxide which kept meat looking bright red for longer.

For those saying it genes longer to break up, I don't think you're cooking it for long enough. Give it an hour or so and it will be broken down and tender. Mince is never great if it's just blasted for 20 minutes.

I get that doesn't make it an easy mid-week meal but I batch cook at weekends so a bolognese will get longer to cook then freeze for easy dinners.

The reduced packaging is great but it is annoying the new stuff can't be recycled. Isn't part of the issue though that we know lots of people don't recycle.

Rude for pointing out brown meat is totally normal?
sorry I hadn’t realised unfounded hysteria and squeamishness were the only ‘acceptable’ responses to normal meat Confused

the sealed packs you mention have an artificial oxygen-free atmosphere to stop the meat going brown (apologies I got mixed up it oxygen that keeps the meat pink)

producing this gas plus the extra packaging is pretty terrible for the environment and the only rationale for it is so meat looks artificially pink. Which isn’t the best reason for destroying the environment

Yes plus the new packaging doesn’t require lots of artificial CO2 production to retain ‘pinkness’

I think its brilliant. We can't recycle the trays in our area, these mean less plastic waste, it tastes just the same, the colour and appearance doesn't bother me in the slightest and it takes up far less room in the fridge/freezer. Might write to Sainsburys and congratulate them.

I also have the Amazon mince masher and its far better than a wooden spoon for breaking it down in the pan.

I've bought some. It's fine. The packaging is just smaller.

This

tastes no different to how it was. Mince is hardly nice looking regardless of packaging.
