Bloody Borris!

Due to go on holiday on Monday. Announcements made tonight but travel agents not open tomorrow. No idea when the new rules start, government website still says the old rules. I’ve got Lateral Flow tests already but now they’re a complete waste of money and I have to spend hundreds of pounds (which I don’t have spare!) buying PCR tests to replace them. I know we have to protect the country, and I know it’s my own fault for travelling during a pandemic, but I wish they’d decide what they’re doing and then announce it with all the details rather than this stressful drip feed 😭

OP posts:

The people who are saying surely the LFT’s are free. How many times has it been told you need to fund your own tests for travel!

The women in front of my DS who has used the free LFT’s at the airport in the summer was turned away. She kicked off said her neighbour told her it was OK to use. She had two kids with her as well. Eventually she said she was going to a funeral.... honestly some people really do think they can blag at and they will be allowed to fly if they shout loudly enough.

Suck up the costs but are you talking about the test to travel out or the Day 2 test? The Day 2 test can be done the day you travel back but no later than Day 2. I found Randox quick for Day 2 although they use a Dropbox system so ensure you are near one of their locations.

Fairy. He has got it right this time. Some people look at their own personal circumstances and want it to suit what they are trying to do.

People moaning that they don’t have the money for another test etc. I presume they are also in the sizeable minority of people who travel without travel insurance because they will be careful and want more beer money. Often to be seen in the papers trying to crowd fund because something did happen and they don’t have any money.

Totally understand your frustration, but it’s the risk you take going overseas at the moment. We all knew there was a high risk of things kicking off again in winter.“

This. Johnson is a twat of the first order and I’d love to be able to blame him for everything but virus mutations aren’t his fault, we’ve all been warned since the beginning that they are likely. I’m pleased the Govt. seem to be moving a little more quickly on this one, hitherto its actions have been painfully slow.

Hope your plans work out but for the foreseeable, that’s life now unfortunately.

And on Omicron - he is doing the bare minimum he can get away with

Of course he bloody he! We ARE trying to keep the country afloat, the industries working and the economy. Why on earth would you go overboard on restrictions at this point, when the variant may turn out to be okay? Why would you cause utter chaos and damage for a 'maybe'.
Seriously people calling for instant lockdowns and tight restrictions need to think about the consequences with some kind of clarity.

Boris has got this spot on, tightened travel, a few restrictions not too many to damage the essential Christmas trade - and we will ALL hope for the best (well some us will, obv not all of us reading this thread)

Isn't the best way to keep the economy afloat to prevent the virus getting out of control Confused

If you bothered to look at facts, you'd see the UK has had the terrible outcomes in terms of both deaths and the economy.

Because we have the worst health disruption in Western Europe, on an ongoing basis.

And some people just want this to go on and on. Let them stay at home. Businesses were really on the edge last time.

I will continue to wear a mask now and would definitely like to see people wearing one when they are unwell. Yes I am talking about the older man in the supermarket coughing and constantly clearing his throat yesterday. No mask and people were giving him dirty looks and giving him a very wide berth. Selfish selfish behaviour

OP call your airline for more clarification, they will tell you if they are already asking for pcr or still accepting ltf tests.

And I have not called for a lockdown, a lockdown is needed once you have failed to take adequate steps.

Unfortunately the high Delta rates mean we are more exposed than other European nations.

I understood OP but this is why I’m not flying until this is all well under control. They can change anything at any time plus it’s not a holiday when there are still restrictions- stricter mask wearing abroad etc.
You might’ve known this was a possibility.

The PCR tests should be charged at cost, not a get rich quick scheme for the many companies set up to fleece the public.

We need a travel industry, they give employment to millions and pay the taxes for our public services.

Airlines say it’s the passenger’s responsibility to do what they need to do. At least that’s the case for the low cost airlines we use…

I agree that the lack of clarity is frustrating. If you are introducing new rules how hard is it to say when they take effect? I fly to the UK today and have already bought tests and filled in my paperwork. I need to know whether that will be acceptable or whether I need to spend the last morning of my trip (visiting family) ordering new tests and doing a replacement form. Tell me what I need to do and I'll do it, rather than announcing things but with no details.

[For now I'm assuming that as the gov.uk page hasn't changed I can fly with what I already have, but I'd rather not be turned round at the airport!]

@Peregrina

But here's a Senior official who doesn't think that Johnson, or Boris as his fans call him, has done enough.

But we've had enough of experts, haven't we?

Only "experts from organisations with acronyms saying that they know what is best and getting it consistently wrong.

(To supply the parts of Gove's quote that you appear to have forgotten)

Fully agree - and if the Government was serious about public health they would be. Not a get richer quick scheme for their mates. Never mind how it was brought here, whether it was because people dared to go on holiday, or maybe even dared to go away to work, or dared to come to see relatives they hadn't seen for a couple of years; concentrate on stopping it effectively.

Why book a holiday in a pandemic?

So when should the OP book a holiday? Holiday companies are taking bookings and there's no travel restrictions to many places, but yet you all seem to deem it's wrong to book a holiday? Can you determine when the pandemic will be over and can you tell us when we can book holidays?

Irrelevant in this case, since there is no evidence that he was from a body known by an acronym, and no evidence that this group of experts did get it wrong.

From Simon Calder, the travel expert- TRAVEL UPDATE
Rules for arrivals to the UK change at 4am on Tuesday 30 Nov.
After that time vaccinated travellers must take a PCR test on arrival or either of the 2 following days and self-isolate until they get a negative result.
Doesn't apply to Ireland.

Why is a simple saliva test for covid-19 not available by now? That would be cheaper and less invasive to take.

Exactly. That's my point - the quote was totally inappropriate.

More generally, I don't think it is good practice to change the meaning of a quotation by omitting significant parts of it.
