AIBU?

DH and DS are pair of wussies.

I made a huge pan of soup yesterday and IMHO may have been the nicest I've made in years. DH and DS both agreed. We had it with crusty buns for late dinner yesterday, they both took some for lunch in food flasks at work today and then DH warmed the whole pan back up and made some huuuuuge dumplings for dinner tonight - I can't make dumplings for love nor money and his are delish. I then made the schoolgirl error of saying "not bad going for a pan full of mouldy old veg" now they're both not speaking to me, both retching, saying I'm disgusting, I've poissened them etc and both convinced they're going to be ill with d&v. DS has even taken the "sicky" bowl and a towel up to bed with him.
I'm not going to be able to make my beautiful mouldy veg soup ever again hahaha.
They are both drama queens with best before dates and I often hide dates from them, I'm of the mind if it doesn't smell rancid then it's fair game you're not going to die.
Wished I'd said not bad for a pan full of slightly on the turn veg instead 🤣😅. In all seriousness though I have to give myself props for stretching a few odds n ends over 3 meals - it's mid skint month after all.

YANBU - They need to grow a pair, you're a wonderful wife and mother feeding your family.
YABU - Your an evil witch forcing both to eat scraps from the bottom of the fridge.

My husband and son would do the same, I hide all the bbds or unpack and freeze. No food waste in my house.

I'm completely unbothered about best before dates and a fan of using up elderly veg, cutting bad bits off etc but I hope you didn't put actual mouldy bits into the soup? That's the line I'd draw.

And yes schoolgirl error to tell them!

If they flounced off from the table, that's more dumplings for you at least

That’s exactly what to do with fridge scraps.

The thought of eating mouldy food isn't very nice, so I'm not sure why you put that into the heads of two loved ones you know are of a sensitive disposition!

There's a middle ground between someone who only eats food up to its use by/best before date and someone who eats mouldy food. If, in reality, you're in that middle ground of carefully inspecting veg and floating eggs, it's all fine, but I wouldn't joke about food around DH and DS again. They clearly can't take it!

My dh is the opposite. He’s South African and they grew up with food from farms and local shops that had no use by date. He goes by smell and has been known to eat curry and pasta bake leftovers that have been in the fridge for over a week! He’s never had a bad stomach or been sick from it. He hates food waste.

I used to be really strict with dates, but have relaxed a lot since marrying him. I’m still strict with meat, but everything else is fine as long as it smells and tastes ok. I find cream lasts for a week or so after the date. Eggs, I do the float test. Veg is fine as long as it’s not rotten. I usually cut off the bad bits if it’s partially gone. Ready meals I’ll happily eat a couple of days after the use by date. Cans, I’ve eaten 6 months pasts their date, even a year in some circumstances. Mouldy hard cheese, just cut off the mouldy bit and you’re good to go!

@SlopesOff

They would hate my cooking. I don't waste anything unless it is very furry or turned to liquid, or is trying to force its way out of the fridge under its own steam.

I am a very creative cook. No-one has been ill or even died yet, I don't know why.

^This. I have an absolute hatred of wasted food. I make amazing soups with stuff in the bottom of the fridge the day before I go shopping again.

SlopesOff - I haven't ever poisoned anyone either, I think they all now have cast iron stomachs from immunity build up Grin

Your family needs training!
‘Dustbin’ soup (my DM’s term) has always been a popular thing in this house. That carrot that’s gone a bit limp and is looking sorry for itself, a leek that’s well past its proud youth (but fine once you strip the outside leaves off), any potatoes gone a bit flabby and gaily sprouting away, not to mention that last, lonely dried up bit of ham or rasher of bacon you’d forgotten about...
Plus of course that little dish of leftover spaghetti from 3 days ago, snip snip, in it goes....
Onion, celery and stock (cube or home made) are essential for any ‘dustbin’ of mine, though.

Bought some discounted pork chops on Friday, had two on Saturday and two yesterday, all fine.

I go on the basis that if it smells okay and isn't furry it's fine. We have veg in fridge that is weeks past bbf it's fine. Same with a lot of dairy.

Rice is the dodgy one.

Leftover curry + leftover veg from roast + leftover gravy + stock = mulligatawny soup.

Some people are easily nauseated by foods past their best, or the idea of them. There was really no need to tell family members you knew felt this way their soup came from mouldy vegetables — and calling something ‘compost soup’ or ‘dustbin soup’ is revolting, however good it tastes. Whether it will make someone ill is beside the point.

God, MIL does this to me, takes great pleasure in it in fact Grin

I’ve had soup that was hanging around with flies in (don’t worry I fished them out, she said. I still had to fish one out myself though. Then I could not eat the soup and spent lunchtime trying not to retch)

She’s also given me mouldy stuff

And then said “see, it was fine”

I retch very easily, have a sensitive tum. Can’t help it. It’s no fun and someone winding me up about it is just mean IMO

You know them, you know their weakness, and you made fun of it. So YABU

Well, both have made it through the night and gone off to work this morning 🤣
Just to clarify nothing was actually mouldy, and was said tounge in cheek, but literally a day away from being on the turn. I hate food waste though so even if it had of been mouldy I'd have chopped the bad bits off and still chucked them in. I've got a big block of Red Leicester in the back of the fridge still on the go with a best before date 29th November - it's not green and the hard bits grate easier I find 😆🤦🤫

YANBU to make a pan of incredible soup out of mouldy veg. YABVU and daft to tell them when you know how precious they are.

You clearly told them on purpose, it was an unpleasant thing to do.

As long as it was the veggies on the turn and not the meat then I don't see the problem.

I thought that one of reasons you have soup is to use all the left over and not really usable anymore vegetables??

I bet they're going to claim they've had awful stomach ache now. Over the years my family has eaten mega amounts of stuff that has gone past its sell-by dates and never had a reaction, but I make sure they never know it.

Agree with this really. I don't think you needed to mention it to them and it feels like you did it for this sense of smugness when actually they are quite uncomfortable with it. Not very nice.

I wouldn't chuck things away just because they're past their BB date - but I definitely wouldn't want to touch that cheese you mentioned with a use by date in November, so I'm not surprised your DH and DS are a bit wary lol.

@Oneeata this post made me smile. Without meaning to sound sexist it’s only men I know that have an issue with sell by dates my OH is the same he won’t touch stuff that’s a day out of date where as I’m a kinda give it a smell kinda girl 🤣 look at it this way more soup for you next time

wildraisins · 19/01/2021 08:43

Dairy can be on the turn a while before you can actually smell/ taste it, so I think you are being daft with the cheese.

I learned that the hard way by getting very ill and now I am cautious and won't use them after a few days beyond their use by. Fruit and veg though is absolutely fine.

Isn't mouldy veg the whole point of soup?
