AIBU?

To think it’s a bit shit not to be able to use gift cards online.

One of our friends very kindly gave us a gift card for Clark’s to buy our sons first shoes when he was born.

He’s now 16 months and just started walking properly so looking to get him some shoes- trying to work out what size he is is a whole other issue!

Checked my gift card and you can ONLY use them in store.

I find gift cards stressful, as I always feel pressure to spend them asap to avoid a situation where the company collapses or before I forget about them and find them stuffed in a draw expired years later! But that normally means they get spent on something I'm not 100% about that I probably wouldn't have gone for had I been spending my own cash.

I believe there are some sites you can use to sell giftcards online, though you don't get the full cash amount for them usually I don't think, but I'm not sure how great those sites are.

H&M is the same, which I learned after asking my whole family for vouchers so I could get their maternity and breastfeeding range after the birth of my twins! Not all the stores carry all the breastfeeding stuff and I couldn't really go on shopping expeditions with newborn twins Angry

Gosh! I was so sure I’d done that before (part points/part cash). How strange!

Same here with Victoria's Secret. I have a gift card that it turns out can't be used online, and now it looks like they're closing down.

So annoying. And a good reason not to buy anyone gift cards. Or spend them as soon as you get them!

I have a Boots card and it annoys me that they won't let you use your points towards something that costs more than your points value (and pay the rest obviously).
Yes that's really irritating. That has meant that I mainly do my shopping in Superdrug now. I rarely get out of Superdrug without spending more than I intended so it's Boots's loss.

I imagine a huge % of gift cards are lost or not spent. I won some cineworld vouchers once but there isnt a cineworld near us. I saved them thinking wed take them on holiday or go to a cineworld when visiting non local family but they expire after 18 months I think.

@ChrissyPlummer no I meant in store. wanted to buy an electric toothbrush (not an expensive one) and the cashier wouldn't let me use my points and pay the balance.

I agree, I often have vouchers and hate going shopping.

However, shops are opening now and you'll be able to take your little boy to have his feet measured and shoes fitted properly.

Hi OP, not sure if you have tried, but if you give their Headoffice Or care line a call They may be able to transfer the gift card into an E-voucher for you? Worth a go x

I didn’t try, I was frustrated and grumpy so just paid for them.

SerenDippity Really? I’ve done this with Boots points in-store before, or did you mean online?

Eugh Wickes does this too it's very annoying.
You also can't order stuff for delivery instore. So if you want large items you have to order online with no discount.

I hate gift cards. My DH got given quite a substantial amount as a Christmas bonus in gift cards last year. I assume there is some tax loophole or something that makes it better for his employer to do that rather than give money. I can't remember the brand, but its one of those that you can use at (allegedly) many stores - just not shops that we use, or in many cases, even exist where we live. Plus the rules are totally inconsistent. In some shops you can only use them in store, some only online, some exclude particular products and so on. A year and a half later, we still have about two thirds of it unused, and what we have spent is largely on stuff we didn't even really want!
I used to give gift cards for Christmas to people like my grown up nephews and nieces as I was brought up to believe that giving cash was a bit vulgar. I've got over that now though - they get cash so they can buy whatever they like, wherever they like and no middle men are getting anything off me.

As a PP mentioned, If you contact the company's HO or Customer Services team they'll be able to amalgamate the gift cards for you, at least that solves one problem. They could probably issue the amalgamated card in the form of an eVoucher.

Sounds ridiculous. They'll probably argue that they haven't the system to administrate the cards online, but that would be nonsense.

Gift cards often end up as a bit of a con unless you use them straight away (if that's even possible?. Couldn't you sell yours to a friend or family member who has a clarks nearby and would use them?

Be careful with those one4all cards , they take small amounts off you if you don't use them . Its about 80p a month or something.

You could buy somethings from a store with them then take the items back and they will give you a refund onto their own store gift card so you would have the amount all in one go to spend on one item ?

I work for a retailer and lots of people come into spend them and we can't tell how much is on them on our tills but the customer will always check and say something small has been took off the one4all giftcards coz they haven't used them .

One4All are a bloody swizz.
DD got one for Christmas but asked me for the cash instead and I could have the gift card so I looked at John Lewis for some bits. I had to make the total exactly £30 and the stuff I wanted was £29.25. Couldn’t go under £30 as then I would have had to pay a fee for click and collect which puts it over £30 and you can’t use the card as part payment so spent ages trying to find something for 75p.

One4all are useless. I had 2 or 3 totalling over £100 and I wanted to put them towards an iPad in Debenhams, which I could get a bit cheaper on amazon but couldn’t use the gift cards. Couldn’t use all 3, so I bought the iPad on amazon instead. No wonder high street shops are struggling. I could have used 3 Debenhams gift cards apparently But not One4all. You also can’t use them as part purchase online - I wanted swimwear out of season, so it wasn’t available in store, and my gift cards didn’t cover the total value so I couldn’t use them.

I don’t mind vouchers but I’d never buy ine4all after my experience with them. It’s also crazy and where is selling ones which can’t be used at all online.

The All for One cards in the shop work - last time j took a stash into WHSmiths and they did some magic and I used 3 in one go to pay for something. But online? Nope. You can't use more than 1 card in a transaction.

Yeah that’s shit

Gift cards are only decent gift cards if you can spend them online AND in stores

Though I would want the shoes to be properly fitted before purchasing so maybe the Clarks one isn’t so bad

I had a one for all card that I used in a shop, are there different types UncleShady?
