AIBU?

Why haven't they been arrested yet? Why?

The officers who murdered and were accessories to the murder of George Floyd. Can anyone give me a logical reason for it? I've been up all night watching footage of the riots. There look to be upwards of 150 officers stood outside Chauvin's house protecting him and his family. Minneapolis is on fire. Why not arrest the murderer? It's clear as day that he murdered Floyd in cold blood. As a black woman, with black brothers, and black friends and family across America, I feel sick. I can't sleep. I can't stop crying. I don't agree with the violence that has happened across minneapolis but I feel the rioters' pain. I can't make sense of this.

@Wewearpinkonwednesdays there was, I think in Florida. It was heart- breaking.

I agree.

How they think it can just go away when there is video evidence of their actions leading to his death is beyond me?

I've found this really heartbreaking.

It’s beyond horrific. It’s murder in cold blood and the world is a witness.

@PlanDeRaccordement

when she lied to the police and said an African American had threatened her.

I thought Amy Cooper didn’t go past threatening to call the police and lie to them. In the video, she doesn’t actually get beyond holding her phone? If she had carried out her threat, it would have been illegal as a false allegation

She did ring the police. It is on the video

@planderaccordement thank you. That brings me some hope.

It's honestly horrific, i had to force myself to watch the footage as I really didn't want to (I find it too upsetting) but this is the reality for black men in America. Its an utter disgrace and how people can say there is no problem with systematic racism in America is beyond me - it's devastating OP.

@PlanDeRaccordement Amy Cooper did call the police.

Did you watch the whole video.

How is this sort of thing still happening.

When I lived there, my feeling was that it was steadily getting worse, not better. That’s just anecdotal and probably limited by my local area/neighbourhood though.

Amy Cooper
I must have seen a shorter edited video then.
Absolutely she should be arrested. Making a false allegation to the police is a crime in NY.

The inherent racism in the USA is why. There is no other reason. I’m sure if it had been a black officer and a white suspect, he would be in custody (or worse) by now.

I couldnt watch the footage to the end. Its horrific.
Rage and tear inducing as another poster said.
I really hope things change but I fear they wont.

Flowers Op. it is horrible

On the plus side I’ve seen footage of the crowds outside his house so life cannot be very pleasant for him right now.
The explanation of the US legal system was really interesting.
There’s no doubt they will be arrested and charged once the authorities have all the evidence from the autopsy etc. hang in there

They think it will just go away because it always just goes away.
The police feel so confident that they can brutalise and kill black people that they don't even care when it's filmed. They are THAT sure the system will support and protect them.
What will happen now is the focus will get shifted into the riots and the narrative will be dreadful lawless black people destroying things how awful and uncivilised something must be done look at how aggressive they are...
And the murderer of Mr Floyd will slip away with a token 'punishment' no doubt with private apologies and we have to be seen to do something you understand but don't worry, we'll see you right, full pension, full protection until we get these people back in their place.

I would love to believe this officer will get life in prison for murder but there's more chance of me sprouting wings and flying.

I was speaking with my husband about this last night. It’s because they’re police. They’d likely only get prosecuted if they killed another police officer. It’s unfathomable how they can get away with it. But they will. It’s a disgrace.

To the OP. I just had a very honest conversation with my flatmate, we are both white. We all know racism is a problem. And I think it is important to be honest in our conversations around this subject.

We were talking and we said that even though we can think that these deaths are horrible, and black people are treated horribly, white people would still let racism continue for a lot longer.
Why? Because we benefit from it. We have the power. And we do not even think of it in a way like "we want black people to suffer" we are thinking in a way of "i want more for me, more for me"

This is why racism is going on everywhere.

It is very hard to get humans to give up power.

And it is the exact same reason why men have been treating women like shit for decades. They love the power. And no matter how much you tell them that women are suffering, men will not give power up.
People with power do not want to give it up.

The only way to get things to change is for white people to be held way more accountable for what they do to black people, charge them more with hate crimes, if they say anything racist - to be fined and shamed.

Only when white people are held more accountable for their actions - will racism change.

The same with men- only when men are held more accountable for how they treat women, rape, discrimination having nore serious consequences, will sexism change

Yes, when I watched the video I automatically assumed the officers had been arrested on a murder charge. When I found out they've only lost their job I was shocked. It's absolutely disgraceful.

There’s more chance of them being harmed before being arrested, Minneapolis has erupted in violence and there are videos on social media that seem to indicate that undercover police officers are actually inciting the violence. If anyone is interested please see @shaunking and @kalynnemarie_ on Instagram.

I'm sure the police officers will be arrested, certainly at least the one who was kneeling on George.

I dunno if the others may get away with saying they didn't notice what he was doing/thought he was kneeling on his shoulder, etc.

@rainbowqueeen please, in the nicest way possible, don't use phrases like 'on the plus side' in situations like this. It is offensive. There is no plus side.

I think it would be swept under the carpet if the protests were not happening.

The police there are drunk on power because they do have a legal right to use lethal force if they think it justified in the US. And the justifications are numerous and vague. The racism paints minorities as more of a threat and so the police are even more likely to use lethal force.

The protests bring public pressure and awareness which, I think, is the only thing ensuring the these police officers do not get away with murder.

If there were no protests, it would be at most a reprimand for using undue force, maybe a demotion, and business as usual. The police would close ranks and protect their own.
