Am I a CF?

So am I a CF?

I'm not name changing so could be outing.

I need a quick hair cut. Straight across the ends couple of inches. Quick trim around face. Nothing special. I understand skill required otherwise I'd hack it myself!

I can walk to the local hairdresser in 3 mins and pay £23-25.

Posted on local FB looking for a Freelance hairdresser who might want to do it for around £15ish cash in hand will travel to them.

That's £1 per min. Far more than I earn if I work it out.

AIBACF?

NB. Found someone who didn't think I was and is coming to me!

The thing is you have no idea what kind of service you will get. Maybe you’ll get lucky and they’ll do a good job, maybe they’ll cut it wonky, maybe they’ll pull a knife and rob your house. You have no idea. At least with a proper mobile hairdresser service you know who they are and where they are registered to.

I refuse to spend a fortune on hair, because 90% of the time its a fuck up. (I say this as someone who grew up in a family in the trade & trained myself) I prefer to DIY or go to have it done by someone training. College is a good place to go for cheap hair & beauty treatments.

I sway from home dye darker to lovely highlights I cannot afford if I want to keep up the greys...

Either way, thank you MN for confirming it's ok to offer a price for a service with out being an utter CF!

A dry trim is under £10 where I live.
I dont get why people enjoy going to a salon...I hate going to the hairdresser as I am uncomfortable having my hair touched so I go every 2 months out of necessity

I think you can get away with home dyeing up to a point, but the time comes when you’ve just got to bite the bullet and have it done properly.
I loved COunt’s post😂
THATS why we pay!!

There are salons near us that will cut hair for about £8. So I don't think YABU. (I usually either do my own or go to the hairdressing school.)

Exactly.

Home dyes say if you have long hair use 2 packs, but becaus emy hair is so thin and fine I don't actually need to despite its length. And when a salon dye is £60+ then a 20% surcharge is quite big when
I'm on a budget. I know it's not a huge amount of money it's just that it seems/feels so unjust.

I pay more at the groomers for my dog than i do for my own hair cuts. Mind you, people
Comment on my dogs cut when we are out at the park, ‘where do you get your dog cut? It looks good.’ Nobody every says anything about my hair...

@soupforbrains Yeah see I can imagine that being annoying. Because if you were paying for volume of due used, it would be the same for thicker shorter hair, right?

I mention the fine thing because of dying.

My hair is really long so often they try to charge me more for colouring which in theory I understand, because more hair = more dye used. But the fact of the matter is that a single packet of home due still colours all my hair despite the length. I have such fine AND thin hair it's pathetic.

@soupforbrains Mine is fine too.

You should ask.

Don't ask, don't get.
Don't ask, never know..,

And so on...

Honestly had a response offering me £25.

Yeah I can walk 3 mins and pay less.

I think if you put out the request like I did, and someone wants the job, no one looses out.

We should a do this more for more 'jobs'. Help out locals, get decent prices.

Don't get the weird responses I got on FB. 'Well, if you want a decent cut...'

As many have already replied you are not a CF

But your topic has inspired me to air my personal bugbear about hairdressing.

I have extremely fine and thin hair. It is long (below bra strap) but it is just cut straight across no fanciness no layers etc.

It drive me MAD that I am expected to pay X% more as a 'long hair surcharge' when all I'm asking for is a straight across trim how is the length of my hair relevant??

I was worried because someone came back and seemed to think I was taking the piss!

They must have a boring life if they have time to waste responding to people tendering a very fair price for an everyday service, to register their personal disapproval of the price offered.

I bet they'd have a field-day in Harrod's (or even Waitrose) going around for hours, sucking in at the back of their teeth and tutting at the displayed prices of every item, rather than doing what most sensible people do: either go in, willing to pay the prices, or stay away if unwilling/unable.

That's pretty normal for what a barber charges. £60 per hour is a perfectly reasonable rate of return for a small business on an employee's time. The only reason salons charge more is because people pay it.

Report
theemmadilemma · 10/03/2019 23:18

@GreenTulips Yes, I can kind of do with out that for the extra charge. If I wanted that 'experience' I'd do it.

I just want my ends lopped off for a decent and fair price.

I thought it was fair to say, here's my budget, do you want the job?

Someone did, and I'm happy to give them my money. And no doubt I'll end up tipping if the job is good, and they might get a regular client.

Well done OP.
We have recently been quoted £3000 labour costs for a bathroom renovation estimated to take the builder (lone worker) 4 days Hmm, as a health care professional with 30 years exp, I dont get anywhere near that for a months work.
I might do as you have done and post on FB with the price we are willing to pay .

LOL you mean you don’t want the super deluxe all our pampered ‘experince’ Of a world class hair salon?

And miss the crying toddlers?
And sip the revolting tea?
And then feel grateful you’ve been allowed conditioner for an extra cost?

@howmanybiscuits That's sad, and true I have no doubt. Hence me trying to offer cash in hand quick job to someone at a reasonable rate (I think).

I was worried because someone came back and seemed to think I was taking the piss!

I offered a 'job' if there were no takers fair enough, but I think it's ok to barter like that? Helps local traders, I get a good price. Who looses out?

I'm specifically asking for a dry cut, because I want my straightened hair length perfect, my curly don't give a f hair length is whatever it ends up. So 15 min job done.
