AIBU?

Females are shite at Maths

According to a fucking hilarious Mumsnet cliche-meme on the FB feed.

FFS this is appalling. Why are Mumsnet of all places perpetuating the myth that girls can’t do maths.

I know plenty will say “lighten up, it’s harmless fun” but it’s not. It’s continual nonsense-shite that pervades and influences girls and their views that maths is a boys’ subject.

Maths is for everyone.

Shame on you MN.

I would consider myself a pretty strong feminist but as someone who is SHIT at maths (on account on not being good at maths and not on the account of my vagina) I would tell my kids to ask their dad, just so they were asking someone who wasn’t me and he’d be the other person in the house at the time

Guess either I need to let my husband know I’m a man or I need to hand back my first class mathematics degree.

I've just reported your OP, AutisticHedgehog (not to get rid of it, just to draw it to MNHQ's attention), and put the following message:

"Mumsnet - if this really is your facebook feed (and it seems to be) please delete this. We female mathematicians, scientists and engineers have had to wade through enough sexist shit in our lives to get where we are today without you adding to it for the next generation of science-minded girls."

sparkling hoping you've had a second look and realised your level of numptiness.
Oh my word though. Are MN going to comment on this thread?? I bloody hope so! Appalling!!!

Presumably it’s a campaign for people to improve their maths skills so for the people it is relevant to it will be a relatable situation?

I’ve not had the email so don’t know the whole context, but if it is something to do with struggling with maths skills I don’t find it a problem as it won’t be referring to women in general but just those who struggle with maths who are the target audience.

If it wasn't so depressing I'd be laughing at the idea of my 17yo DD asking her father for help with maths.

Thank you Fermat - I’ve reported myself too :-)

Ffs! DD is a second year physics student at a uni who is very proud of it's 70/30 male to female ratio on the course, that is an unusually high number of women. I strongly believe it's so unequal because of the shit attitude in society which drips the message to girls that they can't do do it, they're not smart enough and maths is for boys. Way to go mumsnet Angry

I have already said I have but thanks anyway Tabathatwichett. I only saw the picture of the woman looking bemused and the capital letters in bold not the tiny writing.

My DH interviews and teaches maths at the University level and although it may have been the case in the past that girls weren’t encouraged to do maths, there are more and more coming up. He gets excited when they get a group of young women applying and interviewing as it means the girls are being encouraged at a young age to follow their interest in maths. Times they are changing.

danci it’s not an email - it’s one of the MN memes that they have posted on their FB page. So everyone can see it - and lots of people seem to find it funny

I'm the proud owner of both a maths degree and a vagina and this sort of crap really winds me up.

me too. I teach it as well and the number of parents (mums usually if I am honest) that say "oh I was never good at Maths at school and I did ok

We have a massive problem recruiting girls to A level and beyond. I taught a really bright top set with 19 girls in year 10 and they only managed to get 2 of them doing A level(I dont work there anymore.) This kind of thing is the reason why. Aaargh!!!

Further proof that mn does indeed encourage that it is feminine to be thick. No science topic, just 'geek stuff' and endless silly cow recipes using the word 'naughty '.

shameful.

WTF.

MN really?!? I don't quite know what to say. Because that is a really shit advert. Does the people who created not realise how maths phobias can be passed down from female to female in a family and this sort of thing just reinforces this.

Atrocious, I really hope it's not genuine mumsnet because I'd expect better from them than that (researcher with PhD's in chemistry and physics, lots of maths)

@Sparklingbrook The video actually says 'go and ask your father'

Well, I help with all the maths in this house.
I have a degree in it, and DH 'only' has Maths & FM A level.

😮 ffs-as I've studied maths for the last 9 months & recently sat exams on said subject my poor children are more likely to come to me-according to that they're fucked...
