Hotel mistake, wibu to tell them I'll correct it after Christmas?

Recently went to Vietnam on holiday. Stayed in a 3 star hotel for 3 days at a cost of £90. Lovely hotel, lovely staff.

Whilst there we booked a trip organised by the hotel at a cost of $100.

When we checked out they forgot to charge us for the trip and we never realised as we were rushing around so just settled the bill they presented to us.

A week later I receive a friend request on Facebook from a lady who worked at the hotel. I accepted and she sent a message saying that whilst we were at the hotel we booked a trip that they forgot to charge us for. She goes on to ask if we will now pay for it because if we don't, the staff have to pay for it themselves. It was very polite but almost pleading. I felt really guilty as I know $100 is a hell of a lot of money to these people so I replied straight away and said of course we will pay.

I spoke to DH on the night who wasn't happy because we will now how to pay a currency conversion fee but agreed we would pay. Then as we have been so busy since we got back we forgot.

So she sends another message asking if we can pay now and if we send her the card details we can pay like that. I meant to speak to DH about it again but he's working long hours at the minute and I keep meaning to mention it but when he's here I keep forgetting!

Anyway yesterday she sent another message. However now we can't really afford to pay it until after Christmas. We have £500 left to last us until after Christmas and that $100 will leave us skint. If they'd charged us at the time it wouldn't have been a problem!

As it was there mistake wibu to tell them I'll pay after Christmas?

Look at the email when it arrives.

The bottom line is you booked a trip and didn’t pay.

DivisionBelle · 09/12/2017 10:41

I mean, look at the invoice when it arrives.

You should have dealt with this immediately, all this ‘you are too busy’ ‘you are too poor’.

TotemIcePole · 09/12/2017 10:42

Ring the hotel?

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 09/12/2017 10:44

Do not give out your card details. Get the bank details of the hotel and do a bank transfer

JessieJams · 09/12/2017 10:45

I’d be ringing the hotel and asking to speak to a manager. No way would I send her my card details or even take an invoice from her as being genuine. It isn’t right if staff are out of pocket but it kust be doje through proper channels.

TooSoonForChristmas · 09/12/2017 10:47

If you haven't paid of course you must pay, otherwise it is theft. However you should contact the hotel direct and settle and not go via Facebook

SunshineClouds · 09/12/2017 10:48

YABU. Pay it, but pay it to the hotel. Ring them up & ask them to send you their bank details. Then transfer the money. Your DH is particular U.

Devilishpyjamas · 09/12/2017 10:56

Sounds like a scam

zeezeek · 09/12/2017 10:57

And I wonder how many of the sanctimonious people on here who, in real life, wouldn't put their own financial needs above those of people they will never meet again!

It sounds a scam.

IceniLacuna · 09/12/2017 10:57

You definitely need to pay it before Christmas - if you don't then some family even poorer will be suffering for it as a low-paid hotel employee will have it docked from their wages.

But do not under any circumstances put your cc details into an email - that is asking to be a fraud victim on a massive scale. Do a bank transfer into the official hotel account on receipt of a proper invoice. Making sure it really is a proper invoice as anyone with access to ms word can knock together something that looks like an invoice with their own bank details on.

Ecureuil · 09/12/2017 10:58

Bloody hell, it’s not sanctimonious to suggest that if you owe someone money for a service you have received, you should pay them.

Of course you must pay now

Givemeonereason · 09/12/2017 11:03

This is deffo a scam.

TittyGolightly · 09/12/2017 11:04

Haven’t you just made that on bitcoin gains? Get that bill paid.

DivisionBelle · 09/12/2017 11:04

Sounds like a scam? But the OP acknowledges that (in a country like Vietnam where people really do live in tiny amounts of money) they failed to pay for a trip.

Should the cost just be ignored?

Study the invoice.

I saw hotel workers, including the lovely assistant manager, having their bags searched and they were all scanned and patted down, in a line, at the end of their shifts.

SuburbanRhonda · 09/12/2017 11:05

Can't be bothered with a MN showdown today, my head is hurting and I'm running out of paracetamols

I’m assuming this isn’t because of a big night out last night, OP, what with you being skint an’ all.

ArbitraryName · 09/12/2017 11:06

It absolutely sounds like a scam to me too.

Just contact the hotel management OP. They’ll be able to arrange a proper invoice and a reasonable and secure way to pay it.

x2boys · 09/12/2017 11:07

Well you can't trust any stranger really Kuala if they contact you in a strange and unprofessional way via Facebook regardless of where they live be it Vietnam or Birmingham Hmm

saladdays66 · 09/12/2017 11:07

Yes to getting the hotel to invoice you directly. But yes, of course you should pay it - now.

Spartaca · 09/12/2017 11:09

Just say you are wary of sending details online, and if the hotel contact directly you'll pay straight away.

DivisionBelle · 09/12/2017 11:11

If it is a scam, the OP won’t be any worse off than if they had paid in the first place.

Twitchingdog · 09/12/2017 11:12

Scam scam scam scam scam scam scam

Blodplod · 09/12/2017 11:16

@divisionbelle, exactly! They won’t be any worse off by paying it and by doing so by a safe and secure method what does it matter?

MsWanaBanana · 09/12/2017 11:17

OP I think you need to be really careful here. Something doesn't sound right and it smells of a scam to me. Why would he hotel management not call you directly. Also, why is this girl insisting on you sending your credit card details by email? I don't know why so many people are telling you to pay her. If this was anyone calling you on the phone demanding your credit card details, everyone would be saying don't do it it's a scam. You should pay if it's a genuine mistake and they forgot to charge you. Best thing would be to call the hotel up directly and ask to speak to the manager and sort it out with them. I do not advise you to send anyone your card details. That's just asking for trouble
