Daughter age 4 is very excited about Halloween as first year she really understands it.
She has picked her costume and telling everyone about it.

Found out this morning her surgery admission date is Halloween 🙈

We live on a busy road but not really a family road, mainly shared houses of students and then some houses with lone couples so about 3 kids including 2 at mine on the whole road.

Would it be cheeky to knock on a few of the doors to ask if they didn't mind her coming and knocking a day early ( I could even provide the sweets )

Or would this be rude 🙈

I’m obviously the Halloween equivalent of Scrooge. Please don’t knock on my door before during or after. I don’t allow my kids to beg at doors so don’t take kindly to having my evenings disturbed. If you did happen to catch me I would probably say ‘here have some sweets now as we’re not in for the next week!’

I would happily oblige - and I am in central London where you don't talk to your neighbours.
Being part of a nice plan to make Halloween happen for a child would really make my evening Smile

I would happily do this, I'd probably even get my 2 to dress up when they opened the door!

Good luck with the surgery x

Maybe you could have a pumpkin balloon at one house if she isn't allowed sweets?

I’d steer clear of childless neighbours

Oh do fuck off

Report
Papafran · 25/10/2017 15:18

I would do it too if asked. As long as you know the neighbours.

Me and mine would definitely support you doing this. She's only little, it would be a shame for her to miss out.

This is my first year on quite a busy road so I'm hoping for a few T or T this year, I've never had one!!! Halloween Biscuit

Noooo, please don't ignore us (meeee) just because we don't have DC around. If we are showing a pumpkin, please let us join in and knock on our door. Anyone who doesn't want to join in will most likely not be showing any lights, certainly not decorations. Pleeeease...

DH has been known to laugh at me dashing out of the house as groups of dressed up kids come back passed our house again, having visited people beyond us and not knocked on our door. See, we have sweets, chocolates (all in commercially sealed packages) and glow sticks too, just incase

Hmm I don’t have kids and am a miserable bastard, and I’m a bit Hmmabout the fact that trick or treating has become ‘a thing’. I’m probably just bitter because my parents never let me do it when I was a kid (glorified begging don’t you know!)

So I think if I were you I’d steer clear of childless neighbours in case they are miserable bastards like me Grin and go for the houses where you know they’ve got kids and they will be up for it.

I'm not a big fan of trick or treating but my DD is so last year we baked Halloween biscuits. I checked with neighbours if it would be ok to call and then each time she got some sweets, she handed over a biscuit in return. Great way to get to know the neighbours and I'm sure yours wouldn't mind taking part.

If you explained the reason why, I wouldn’t mind at all! I’d be happy to help.

Bless her, hope it all goes well. Flowers

I would absolutely be game if you knocked on my house, who wouldn't want to bring a bit of excitement to a 4yr old!
I also live on a busy road with virtually no families living there. After a couple of very disappointing Halloweens with my dc, I used to do a trick or treat treasure hunt in the garden instead. Stuck a few pumpkin lanterns out there and hid some sweets (and wrapped up sprouts/carrots for the trick lol) and sent the DC out with Halloween glow stick things and their buckets, to hunt for them.
I hope your DD enjoys her Halloween, however you manage to do it.

YANBU OP - no harm in asking, hope a few people are happy to take the sweets for you and open their door to your LO. I'd be happy to do this if someone asked! Hope the surgery goes well Biscuit

Fab idea, I reckon you can get most people on board. Take her costume, treat bag and some treats into hospital with you, I'm a children's nurse and have certainly trick or treated on wards before.

I’d be fine with this and would probably have sweets in by then anyway ! I’d even dress up if you asked in the afternoon lol

keepservingthedrinks it was really lovely, and it really helped us get to know the neighbours. One year DS was poorly so I did goodie bags with a note "my little monster isn't very well so here's a treat to do the trick this Halloween" or something like that so they didn't knock on and disturb him ( he really was very ill and desperately needed the peace and sleep). A good few of the neighbours bought sweets to the door for him a few days later, it was so kind and made him feel so special. I think people will go out of their way to make the day of a small child esp a poorly one. (DS is fine now btw)
