Cut out shoulders tops

I am in no doubt I am being unreasonable, can't stand these tops and think they make the most attractive people look bloomin' awful. I can't be alone in this surely?

Ha I rather like those ones Bunty! I need bulk in those areas to balance out my bulky thighs and bum. I don't actually have one as cba with strapless bras these days, but if I was younger I probably would.

Oh no wait, your're talking about tops with random bits cut out. I thought you meant these monstrosities.

They're horrible and add bulk.

I do however love Bardot/off the shoulder tops, which are very flattering.

Agree with you Ella

I'm an hourglass verging on pear (narrow shoulders) and I need tops with extra fabric at the shoulder to balance me out. Not less fabric.

I don't think the women who want to minimise very broad shoulders would be likely to buy these either as they'd be worried about calling attention to their shoulders?

Yanbu.

Unless you're Kendall Jenner, who'd look good in a sack.

LyingWitch, my point is that these tops turn hourglasses into pears and are particularly unflattering on pears. It's only a small minority of women with extremely broad shoulders who will be flattered by having their shoulders minimised.

So that's what they are called. I have seen a lot recently all of a sudden. Don't people get bizarre tan marks on their arms?

YANBU. They're bloody everywhere this year too. It's like the retailers have designed some perfectly decent tops and then taken the scissors to them. Those and off the shoulder tops. I've pretty much given up finding anything I like this summer.

They look very naff. I cringe a bit when I see them.

I wouldn't wear one but they are not too bad. Better than some fashion crimes (e.g., white jeggings, printed jersey tunics from Seasalt/White Stuff).

Some women have that shape naturally, Elly and I think they do suit some.

TrickyD · 07/08/2016 17:30

They seem perfectly harmless to me. On the other hand I find racer backs with bra straps not coinciding, and other displays of bra straps running amok very tacky.

Here is the reason I think they are unflattering: they visually narrow the shoulders. Getting a nice x-shape, figure8, hour glass etc. Requires the shoulders visually balancing the hips. Cut out shoulders emphasise the hips and minimise the shoulders. Only a minority of women will benefit from this effect.

I hate them.

Sometimes I'm shopping for clothes and see a top and think "wow, I really like that" then see it has those stupid non sleeves so have to pass on by.

Mind you, I wore them first time round decades ago

I don't think they look good on any shoulders is what I meant!

Report
ALLthedinosaurs · 07/08/2016 10:15

I have small brown shoulders but I wouldn't wear them. If I want a long sleeve top its to keep me warm. I don't want cold shoulders!

I was thinking the other day about how I detest clothes with any sort of cut out. I feel quite strongly about it. Especially pretty dresses with big fuck off pointless hole in the back Angry

Crikey, lost my own thread...not au fait with tracking them...slippery devils. Thankyou to all contributors, I am glad I am not alone.

By Bardot- style I mean the tight-fitting ones, not the elasticated ones that flap about.

Report
WanderingNotLost · 30/07/2016 00:39

Yeah, I'm not a fan. I think Bardot-style tops can be quite elegant but you do have to be very slim and toned to pull them off- but the cut-out shoulder ones just look daft.

They look fantastic on my 16 year old! I will give them a wide berth.

Definitely sunburnt shoulder tops.

Why are they always polyester?
