Bought a new house and the old owners didn't think they had to move out!

So today we went to complete on our new house, very excited and all packed ready to go. We got a call from our solicitor to say it was completed and we left to go to our new home, with all of our things. Stopped off at the estate agents, got the keys, everything fine.

We get there, go to the front door, put the key in and have a massive shock to find the previous owners sitting in the lounge. We asked who they were and they introduced themselves as the previous owners. They hadn't even packed one box!! DH asks them why they are still in OUR house and they inform us that they decided not to move out until Sunday!? We pointed out that we had all of our things in a van outside with our 2 month old baby and DH politely asked them to leave to which they replied it would be too inconvenient for them to leave today!

We ended up threatening to call the police as we legally owned the house and now had nowhere to go, so they said they would leave in an hour but acted as if we were being very unreasonable. We had to get all of our helpers to help them pack and they ended up leaving 5 hours later.

I'm also quite pissed off with the agent as surely they should make sure these situations don't happen.

Is that article about the thread that was started yesterday rather than this ancient one?

When my parents sold off the old family home they got professional removers to pack 40 years of clutter, and they took it the day before completion.
The evening before completion I went round after work, with my toddler, to reminisce and leave my key. I found that the removal men had missed a kitchen cupboard (a tall one) and a garden shed.
With no boxes or bags, a tired 3 yo and a Ford fiesta car I single handedly emptied that entire sodding shed and cupboard. By the time I finally locked the front door and posted my keys back through the letterbox I was exhausted and my toddler was passed out asleep in her car seat surrounded by tools, gardening equipment, boxes of screws and nails, kitchen cleaning sprays....piled so high in my car I couldn't use the rear view mirror. When I got back to my flat, my husband gave me a look that said, without need for words, how frustrating he found his MiL.

When we moved into our current place the seller was texting me from about 8am to ask if completion had happened yet - er, no, the banks aren’t open yet and also ask your solicitor - so seemed very keen to get going. Completion happened about half twelve and we got to the new place with our removal men to find the seller had only one room packed! He then had the cheek to ask if we’d mind all going to the nearby cafe to wait (including removal men who were being paid by the hour). We didn’t have loads of furniture as were moving from rented so said no and pointed out it wasn’t his house any more anyway. We ended up moving our stuff into the only empty room, seller didn’t leave until gone six pm. We laugh now bit at the time it was pretty annoying. I get the feeling the seller didn’t even start packing until completion was confirmed Hmm

We've had this!!!!
Owners had literally no clue. Had to chuck them out and they came back the next day for the remainder of their things, including a gun-safe in the basement.... (Hackney, 1993 /4)

@MaryPoppinsPenguins

We're moving soon and have told the current owners they can stay a few days past completion.. As we're in rented so are flexible and they've asked to move out slowly to clean etc... But unless prearranged? Bizarre!!

I would be a bit careful with this. Once it’s no longer their property their house insurance won’t be valid and I’m not sure where you would stand if it burnt down and you weren’t living there?

There is a current thread running about exactly the same situation.

No idea why @Jobseeker19 has resurrected this without even commenting.

No doubt there will be dozens of replies to the originl 2016 post.

July 1999...We were moving from rented into a house across the road.. (first viewing in February.. Numerous hold ups.) With 2 primary age children and a toddler I had packed most of the house up.. Had cleaned and emptied one of the children's bedrooms and they had been sharing for at least 3months so floor to ceiling boxes.. When we finally got the call to say the house was ours my DH and friend took over the first boxes..
The couple were still there, wouldn't even answer the door.. We just took over stuff and left in the garden... To make matters worse the landlord was moving back in and arrived 3 days earlier than agreed.. (we were paid up till then). She just walked in with her stuff whilst I was over at new house...
It was chaos...
To cap it all finally the front door opened and the man came out, walked past us totally ignoring us.. We couldn't use our phone as number had been disconnected (before mobiles).. He came back 20mins later with fish and chips! Again walking past us and ignoring us even though my DH was livid by this point.. I had to leave for the walk to collect the kids from school. An hour later they still hadn't moved... We were getting hastle from our landlady..
I could have cried.. Everything we owned in the garden and 3 children to feed...
They finally left at 6pm...6 hours late.. leaving an horrendous mess and so much rubbish...
And yes I can laugh now but at the time it was awful... We were also having a heatwave and it was 30' with no where to go except sit in the garden...

Similar happened to us although less extreme! We arrived at 1pm to our new home having collected the keys with our lives packed into two Van's. Old owners not even half way through moving out and were suprized to see us!!! We ended up helping them and then moving our stuff into the house in the dark...

@Esspee

Why is there a spate of zombie threads lately? The member who resurrected it Jobseeker19 didn’t even have the decency to write a single word. One has to wonder at the motivation behind it.

There was another thread about ridiculous vendors who were still in the house after completion and this one was discussed.

That is mad, you are supposed to hand your keys in so either they kept a set or had very odd views of the legality. Definetly change all the locks and go to your solicitor, hope you took lots of photos.

We got up at the crack of dawn to do the six hour drive to our new home to find it looking like the Marie Celeste! Although the money had gone through the estate agent wouldn’t give us the key because they hadn’t moved out.
This is where our solicitor stepped in and told the agent that not us, but she would be taking legal immediate legal action against them and that we would be breaking into our home.
I was exhausted but it did get exciting as the agent suddenly realised the solicitor had organised a hammer to be couriered to us! She did get us compensation for storage of their furniture on our new front lawn!
I tend to go for vacant new builds now.

Unlucky about the car but at least you are in, like above said if you haven't already make sure locks are changed, get cctv and alarms up, make sure all bills are sorted and finalised, have proof of ownership to hand as if they haven't paid anything or try to use your address for credit cards etc you will need to prove ownership if the bailiffs or debt collectors turn up. They seem completely deluded, by the point of completion unless already pre agreed to have a day or two to move I would have expected them to be gone. They are no longer the owners of the property by that point and shouldn't be at the property or have any possessions. It's good you stuck to your guns and demanded they leave, they could have been cheeky and remained ultimately giving them squatters rights after so long.
