My 10 year old Subaru is the most comfortable car for long journeys I have ever driven. And is very posh. But I'm sure a brand new BMW is even more comfortable. Just like my ds tells me that Superdry T shirts are more comfortable than Tesco ones............

I just want to reiterate. DH and I are not saying we are posh, we most definitely are very average and ordinary. DH didn't buy the cars because they were a status symbol but because he loves the comfort and drive a BMW gives on long journeys.

Yep knackered old Volvo or a Saab has far more social cachet than a new BMW. It says I have money (as they are quite expensive to buy in the first place) but really don't care and have no anxieties about my class status.If you grasp thos ypu are a good way to Iunderstanding the British class system.

I don't really understand the posh BMW thing - it was our first car when we lived in a tiny room in a shared house. I had no idea it was a status symbol in itself in certain circles . Surely it depends on the model?

I had a brush with a rude ignorant mare in the supermarket recently. I wasn't the least bit surprised to see her climbing into a BMW in the car park afterwards.
In my experience some of the rudest most aggressive drivers on the road drive BMWs. They are not posh cars, they are just magnets for a certain type of person.

PS Also know a couple of very nice people who drive BMWs. But as a general rule they seem to be the most popular car amongst knobs.

I've been thinking (i know i know) and a proper posh car to me is either an ancient Volvo estate or an elderly Saab.

Occasionally a Land rover defender (my uncle used to drive one) but I reckon their stocks gone down cos I'm sure Jordan's current husband was pictured in one during the week.

Basically if you have to have a car to show how posh you are, you're not posh at all?

Given the amount the op's husband has spent, I'd guess it is about eight or nine years old. The message that it sends out is not 'I am posh' but I wanted a BMW any BMW and I am desperately trying to cover up the age with a vanity plate (which is in itself flawed as those who care enough to check will know it is a mk one)

Loads of 'big' beemers round here, but that's because the squaddies buy them tax free when they are posted to Germany. My mate has just traded his in for a sensible Skoda to get the dog in. Must admit his old car was very comfortable though.

'Posh' would be a Saab for me but only because the poshest person I've ever met drove one. It's a Cavalry Car.

I'd love an old E Type Jag or Royal Enfield Bike - bottomless money pits but oh so pretty.

If I was a drug dealer I think I would buy a Hyundai. They are the height of trustworthiness. It's always nice to have a plan. Surely the idea is to remain as unsuspicious as possible?.

I believe drug dealers enjoy a wide variety of different makes & models however they do have a soft spot for gansta glass (tinted windows)
