Where were you when I cooked my first lamb shank a month ago?
I think it was wine, garlic, onions, and in the crock pot, not sure as I got sick and dh made & ate it. Cranberry juice & ground cloves on ham was an experiment that was a success.

I second redcurrant jelly. Worcester sauce and bizarrely Geo. Watkins mushroom ketchup (which isn't like tomato ketchup but is more like a mushroomy Worcester sauce) are good too.

Red currant jelly is my all purpose poshing-up addition to any red meat gravy so I'm not surprised that a small splosh of Ribena gives a lamb stew a bit of added oomph.

I can see where you are coming from, but I would have added cassis - Ribena for grown-ups ;-)

Mmm ham in coke is DELICIOUS!

Ham and coke sounds vile I have never had the urge to try it

Caitlin17 · 30/03/2014 13:35

Lamb and Ribena sounds far more palatable than ham and coke.

I've not added Ribena to anything but anything made from berry fruits can pretty much be added in moderation safely to any rich meat casserole.

I'd draw the line at strawberry yogurt with beef! bleurgh! LOL

someone i know was once salting the spuds in a pan and taking 2 aspirins for a headache at the same time. guess what ended up in the spuds pan - it wasn't the salt!

My mother once added - by pure mistake - a strawberry yoghurt to a beef stroganoff instead of a plain yoghurt. Quite delicious.

Ham in coke is lovely

I was making spiced red wine gravy to go with roast duck breasts a few weeks ago when I realised I'd forgotten to get redcurrant jelly.

Black cherry jam worked just as well!

Has anyone tried cherry coke ham?

It is fabulousa!

Am cooking lamb shanks this week so am going to try onions, tinned toms and brown sugar.

Hope yours turns out good.

It's not really that big a leap from redcurrants to blackcurrant cordial. Lots or recipes have fruit in them

Report
littleowl14 · 29/03/2014 19:46

I think just a splash, and deffo trying the blackcurrants and balsamic combo some time :)
