I watched it through my fingers too.

It's just strikes me as a bit exhibitionist. Sure dance with your Mum, but don't perform.

The more I see of Mumsnet, the more I realise I got this whole wedding lark completely wrong. As I remember it I spent the whole day thinking how wonderful it was that I was going to get to spend the rest of my life with this wonderful person.

When I should have been thinking:

is my MIL going to upstage me?

are the bridesmaids going to upstage me?

are all the wedding guests colour coordinated to set me off in the best possible light?

is there a risk that during the course of the day my path might cross that of another bride, thus reminding me that I am not the only person in the world on my speshul day?

are there any cute children that might upstage me?

I thought it was lovely

It's not "the brides day" - that drives me mad - it's about two people committing to each other and everyone else witnessing, celebrating and supporting that amazing pledge

If my MIL did that at my wedding I think it was awesome - a real celebration - her showing her support for our marriage

And it shows she has a sense of humor - good for her!

Love it! I'd have loved DMil to have done this. I bet she'd have done it too, but for the fact that DH would only just agree to a dance with me, let alone anyone else! Grin

tara you don't need to worry about me, I won't be on my own in a pew, I'll be surrounded by my daughters and family. Helping behind the scenes, helping them to get ready ect ... I won't be doing any lime light hogging.

It's will be my daughters and new husbands day Smile

If it was a father-daughter dance, I bet we'd all think it was hilarious and adorable. I like it - the MIL seems cool!

Oh God! awful awful awful awful. And I hate the mil bashing on Mumsnet and have said so, loudly, for absolute bloody years.

But I had to watch that through my fingers, cringetastic.

Op, you seem to be throwing a hissy fit that people aren't agreeing with you!

Well, thanks to this thread, dd has just made me watch a load of Youtube wedding dances. All good fun.

Yes yes to weddings being all about families and not just the notion of 'the bride'.

I would hate to just be thought of as a bystander at my children's weddings Mish.
Someone on the outside looking in.
To me a wedding is about families and joining together.
Don't be a bystander.

I think she looks like a good laugh.

Some of the comments on here have got me thinking. As the mother of a boy, if he gets married must I know my place and do nothing to upstage the bride because I will be seen as the MIL from hell forever more?

But I am also the mother if a girl. So if she gets married then I am allowed to be involved as much as possible?

What a load of old crap.

Mother of the bride, mother of the grooom. It's a parent who is celebrating with their child. Their adult child but still their child.

My DH and I are currently supporting my lovely MIL who has Stage 4 cancer. My DH has a lovely relationship with his mum, it's part if what makes him the man he is.

You MIL sounds awful Mish. Thanks

Shame mothers like her give the good ones a bad name, my DSs are only titchy but it scares me to think whoever they marry will dislike me.

I plan to be the most agreeable person in the world. :o

Hoodathoughtit - I thought it was great. So did dd. She said "Wow, they are good dancers!"

It looked to me as though the groom had choreographed. He was certainly leading.

Ok I'm on a wind up ! I guess it counts on your relationship with your mil on how you would view this.

I can see two sides of the fence. If this was my ex mil I would have been the biggest cheerer. I still have a fantastic relationship with her 18 years after me and ex dp split. She was lovely, impartial and supportive. I love her very much.

My current mil however is the bitch from hell beyond. Who nearly caused me to split with dp over her lies and stressed me out so mch while pregnant with dd. If she did this at my wedding it would be about her staking her claim on the day.

Parents do need to take a bit of a backseat when their dc have grown in to adults. We are not centre stage anymore in their life's. We have to help nurture and support their relationships not to expect t be a major player in it.

At the traditional weddings I have been to:

the bride's father has walked her down the aisle (in this country at least)

the bride's father has made a speech at the wedding support

the bride's father has danced with the bride

(some of them have danced a good deal better than the groom)

At my wedding there were also people singing and people playing musical instruments that I am unable to play. Plenty of reminders that I am not the only person in the world.

To be fair, my MIL does upstage me on pretty well all occasions. That is because she is great fun, a great character and a truly lovely person. I can live with that.

What a wedding to remember, unlike all the bland boring ones we have to go to.
At least these one's were fun.
