AIBU?

To think there is nothing wrong with Carole Middleton's background

There was a pretty sneery article in the Sunday Times last Sunday by Camilla Long, which seemed to be very critical of the fact that Carole Middleton's parents and grandparents were working class people who made their living in shops and factories. There was also some comment on the lines of 'oh yeah, well William might find TV suppers and family games a novelty now but I'm sure he'll soon get sick of it'.
AIBU to think 'fair play' to her for building up a business from nothing and giving her kids advantages she and her parents could never have dreamed of? From what I can see Kate has a far more stable and supportive family than Princess Di ever had (bitter divorce, very public custody dispute, no decent advice when she was just 19 years old and about to make an enormous mistake with her life etc.) Yet a lot of people seem to think there's something preferable about a fragmented and dysfunctional family because they're upper class; while a middle/working class background with a strong work ethic is just not suitable for the future queen.

Yes, it would a little bit, Compos. It's a matter of opinion, surely, and besides, so what? What do her looks have to do with anything? Confused

Carole middleton is fantastic. She should be the poster-woman for everyone out there. Successful business, seemingly happy family, nice, polite children, an obviously hard working family ethic and proof that sheer determination can get you everywhere you dream about.

I have a bit of a girl crush on her Grin

I do hope all those posters who've written spiteful, bitchy comments about someone whose appearance is entirely irrelevant to her job as a WRITER have got photos on their profiles for the rest of us to criticise. I suspect they wouldn't dare though.

That is my point entirely. A great deal of what I've seen of Camilla Long's output is bitchy, personal and contains irrelevant comment about their personal appearance and lives.

If her stock in trade is bitchy personal attacks, then she should expect the same in return.

Journalists like CL are paid to churn out provocative copy. They write what their editors tell them to. That's the job. So apart from your obvious jealousy, what's your justification for being gratuitously unpleasant?

By your logic, now that you've made a bitchy, personal attack, you shouldn't mind being on the receiving end. So go on, post your photo.

Hola

Whst I was doing was parodying the perceived style and rhetoric of Camilla Long and her ilk and turning it against her for illustrative effect. . It isn't actually what I thimk is acceptable in public discourse.

No one makes her work as a hack or produce this kind of garbage and indulge in such casual cruelty. It is a choice she makes and is rewarded well for making gratuitously nasry personal comments. If that is how she chooses to conduct herself, she should expect a dose of her own medicine.

Whether she is paid or not or whether she believes what she writes is irrelevant. calling her plain is a bit of harmless fun...just like she probably thinks her columns are.

Defensive, much, holla?

Camilla can dish it out so she can expect to get it back in return. The fact that she gets paid for it and chooses to and we don't is neither here nor there.

I find it odd you've asked more than once why we're justified in expressing our opinions? Maybe you think us 'little people' aren't entitled to our views? Or is that we should only play nice?

And why would you assume any of us are jealous?

ComposHat, please don't try to backtrack. The word you used was "ugly", and you used it to denigrate a woman who is doing their job and doing it well. It came over as spite, not "harmless fun". You're not the only person to do it, but it's unpleasant - I don't see people calling Jeremy Clarkson ugly when he writes something they find offensive. Unless you're running an animal shelter while moonlighting as a paediatric heart surgeon, I doubt your job is beyond reproach either.

By the way, I suggest you look up the word "parody", as you seem to have misunderstood its meaning.

Still hoping for a photo :)

I can't imagine why anyone would be jealous of an award-winning, presumably highly paid, rather young and glamorous-looking journalist who interviews celebrities for a living, no :)

Hatchet job of the year, you mean? Yes, what a wonderful achievement Hmm

So you know what posters here look like, do you, and how much we're paid and in what industries? Grin

Keep hoping you seem to disregard everything I say... Hola are you Ms Long's mum?

I meant interviewer of the year, actually... and yes, one can get a fair idea of what people's lives are like from their posts, if one can be arsed :) No, I'm not CL's mum (not old enough thank you very much!), nor have I any other connection to her... it's not really about her, I just find it depressing that when a woman does something that others disapprove of, very often they attack her physical appearance. Still, haterz gonna hate I guess :)

Compos

I understand the point you were making. I thought it was quite obvious and not just some gratuitous remark about CL's appearance.

Sneery lazy article.

Although far more bothered by "haterz".
