Having a discussion with dh and friend about how often it is normal to change bedsheets. My mum cannot go for a week without changing bedsheets and we think this us excessive. We feel, as disgusting as is it is, that it is far more normal to leave it for weeks and only do it when it gets absolutely necessary. We think more people are like this than are willing to admit. Are we being unreasonable?

Weekly here, give or take a day or two. Nothing better than crisp, clean sheets. Could not leave it longer than a fortnight, I wouldn't be able to sleep!

I don't think our washing machine is particularly big but, when DCs are about, all of our bedding fits easily into two loads (with room for socks, knickers etc.) which we can get washed and dried within a morning. When DCs are away, which they are most of the time these days, we can get away with one load. If anything is tedious, it is the stripping and remaking beds, a task that DH has taken upon himself in recent years.

Seriously? What's with the we have x amount of children and work so can't wash bedding?

We have children, we both work 12+ hr days, and the washing machine does all the hard work. It's only taking it off, and another on, no one does backbreaking hand scrubbing in the yard these days.

I honestly don't understand when people say they have piles and piles of washing to due as they are too tired/ work/ have a broken baby toe.. It's not you doing it its the machine!

Because of this thread I washed our bedding today! Think I last did them in Feb! I kept meaning to but didn't have the time to wash and dry on the same day.

We have 4 kids and both work full time. If we had to factor washing 5 sets of bedding into our weekly routine we'd die.

I think in this day and age when we all generally wash every day + wear clean clothes every day weekly bed changing is not essential.

If you take a duvet to a chain dry cleaners they will send it off to their central depot to be washed in a giant washing machine - I know because I've worked there! You can't dry clean a duvet with solvents because it would then be a health and fire hazard - dry cleaning solvent is nasty, nasty stuff and you would not want to be breathing in it's fumes for 6-8hrs a night from your duvet! So in a word you're better off finding your local laundrette and having a service wash. It'll be cheaper, too.

They don't smell or look particularly dirty so it doesn't bother me. Luckily DH is equally slovenly unbothered.

Guests always get clean sheets. Un-ironed ones though.

Zukie - we generally use same bedding also, but just take off in am and back on in pm when clean. Gets washed every week

IEatCakeInBed - if you take your duvets to the dry cleaner, I am sure they will dry clean it. If, on the other hand, you take it to the launderette, I think they will shove it in a big industrial washing machine and then dry it and they will come out clean and lovely.

Twice a week here. Would feel yuk with anything else. If I am ever very rich (not likely), my luxury would be very posh linen sheets changed daily.
